Nowadays market competition is essentially associated to supply chain (SC) improvement. Therefore, the locus of value creation has shifted to the chain network. The strategic decision of determining the optimal SC network structure plays a vital role in the later optimization of SC operations. This work focuses on the design and retrofit of SCs. Traditional approaches available in literature addressing this problem usually utilize as departing point a rigid predefined network structure which may restrict the opportunities of adding business value. Instead, a novel flexible formulation approach which translates a recipe representation to the SC environment is proposed to solve the challenging design‐planning problem of SC networks. The resulting mixed integer linear programming model is aimed to achieve the best NPV as key performance metric. The potential of the presented approach is highlighted through illustrative examples of increasing complexity, where results of traditional rigid approaches and those offered by the flexible framework are compared. The implications of exploiting this potential flexibility to improve the SC performance are highlighted and are the subject of our further research work. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2009  相似文献

Background

This study explored the influence of cigarette smoking and food consumption patterns on BMI after adjusting for various socio-demographic characteristics. Since weight-based stereotypes may have an impact on smoking behaviour and both obesity and smoking have been associated with detrimental health effects, an interdependency between them is quite possible.

Methods

Cross-sectional data were collected via a formal standardized questionnaire administered in personal interviews and two additional self-completion questionnaires from a random sample of 3471 German adults. The empirical framework considered potential endogeneity between smoking and body weight by employing an endogenous treatment effects model with an ordered outcome. The estimations derived from the endogenous treatment effects approach were also compared to the univariate ordered probit model results.

Results

Our findings showed that ignoring potential endogeneity may affect both the statistical significance of the smoking estimate and the direction of the influence of smoking on BMI. Smoking was positively associated with BMI in both male (β?=?1.236, p?<?0.01) and female (β?=?0.634, p?<?0.10) participants. Smokers presented a 23.1% higher risk of obesity and a 24.3% lower likelihood of being within a healthy weight range. Male smokers also appeared to have a considerably augmented probability of being obese compared to their female counterparts (23.6% vs 15.1%). The relationship between smoking and BMI may be attributed to dietary practices, since smoking was correlated with poor dietary habits characterized by the frequent intake of more energy-dense foods (meat products and white-toasted bread) and less frequent consumption of healthy food items, such as whole-grain bread, vegetables and fruits. Concerning the impact of eating habits on body weight, frequent consumption of meat products and confectionery was found to have a direct association with BMI in both genders. Furthermore, white-toasted bread consumption was negatively linked with body weight in males (β?=???0.337, p?<?0.01).

Conclusions

Our findings raised questions about the general belief that smoking is an effective weight control tool. Health interventions should be oriented toward a simultaneous decrease in smoking and obesity, since both behaviours seem to be interdependent. Nutrition programmes should also be designed according to the characteristics of different target groups in order to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have received much attention in both academia and industries due to their superior performance in many applications. Efficient recovery/recycling of ILs from their dilute aqueous solutions is essential for the acceptance and implementation of many IL-based technologies by industry. In this work, a practical and cost-effective hybrid process design method that combines aqueous two-phase extraction, membrane separation, and distillation operating at their highest efficiencies is proposed for the recovery of hydrophilic ILs from dilute aqueous solutions. The application of this hybrid process design method is illustrated through case studies of recovering two hydrophilic ILs, n-butylpyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([C4Py][TfO]) (CAS number: 390423-43-5) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mIm][Cl]) (CAS number: 79917-90-1), from their dilute aqueous solutions. For the recovery of 10 wt.% [C4Py][TfO] from aqueous solution, the hybrid process using (NH4)2SO4 as the salting-out agent could reduce the total annual cost (TAC) and energy consumption by 57% and 91%, respectively, compared with the pure distillation processes. In the case of recovering 10 wt.% [C4mIm][Cl] from aqueous solution, the reduction in TAC and energy savings of the hybrid process with salting-out agent (NH4)2SO3 could reach 49% and 87%, respectively, compared with the pure distillation process. Furthermore, uncertainty analysis through Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed hybrid process design is more robust to uncertainties in energy prices and other material (e.g., equipment and solvent) costs.  相似文献

In this correspondence, we deal with noncoherent communications over multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless links. For a Rayleigh flat block-fading channel with M transmit- and N receive-antennas and a channel coherence interval of length T, it is well known that for TGtM, or, at high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) rhoGt1 and Mlesmin{N,lfloorT/2rfloor}, unitary space-time modulation (USTM) is capacity-achieving, but incurs exponential demodulation complexity in T. On the other hand, conventional training-based schemes that rely on known pilot symbols for channel estimation simplify the receiver design, but they induce certain SNR loss. To achieve desirable tradeoffs between performance and complexity, we propose a novel training approach where USTM symbols over a short length Ttau(tau is a small fraction of T, and recovers part of the SNR loss experienced by the conventional training-based schemes. When rhorarrinfin and TgesTtau ges2M=2Nrarrinfin, but the ratios alpha=M/T, alpha1 =Ttau/T are fixed, we obtain analytical expressions of the asymptotic SNR loss for both the conventional and new training-based approaches, serving as a guideline for practical designs  相似文献

The enzymatic degradation of poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) grafted to carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) copolymers with a cellulasic preparation (Trichoderma viride) was studied. The enzymatic activity of the cellulasic preparation against CMC and the grafted copolymers was determined by the Petterson–Porath method, while their reduced viscosity variation in the presence of the same preparation was also followed. It has been shown that the enzymatic degradation behavior depends on the copolymer composition and the reaction temperature. Reducing sugars analysis showed that the experimental values for the grafted copolymers were higher than the calculated ones. At 50°C, the enzymatic reaction is completed in about 20 min for the copolymers, whereas for CMC it takes more than 40 min. In this work a detailed mathematical model for free radical suspension polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in water is developed. This model is based on sound principles such as the free volume theory to account for the diffusion limited reactions in suspension polymerization. Additionally, the complex polymerization kinetics process of the aqueous suspension polymerization of MMA is studied as a one‐dimensional numerical experiment. For this purpose, the polymerization process is modeled as a moving boundary mass transfer problem coupled with polymerization reactions. The Galerkin finite element method is used to simultaneously solve the nonlinear governing equations. The model predictions for conversion and average molecular weights vs. time were found to be in close agreement with laboratory data. It is believed that this work, as it provides fundamental understanding of the process, it might contribute to a more rational design of polymerization reactors. POLYM. ENG. Mixed finite elements for viscoelastic flows based on a 4×4 sub-linear interpolation for the extra stress components satisfy the Babuska-Brezzi condition and are highly stable. They have been proved to be quite satisfactory in solving problems with strong stress boundary layers. In this work, we examine the simultaneous use of 4×4 and 2×2 bilinear stress elements in an attempt to reduce the computational cost without sacrificing the accuracy. The 4×4 bilinear elements are employed in regions where the stress field is anticipated to be steep while the 2×2 elements carry the burden elsewhere with a much smaller number of stress nodes. Additional constraints along the sides shared by different elements are necessary in order to preserve conformity. The method is applied to the creeping flow of a Maxwell fluid around a sphere falling along the axis of a cylindrical tube. Results are given for three mixed finite element formulations: the Galerkin method, the consistent streamline-upwind/Petrov-Galerkin method (SUPG) and the non-consistent streamline-upwind method (SU). Particular emphasis is given on the calculated drag correction factors. The effect of the sphere/cylinder diameter ratio is also examined.  相似文献

The influence of the membrane thickness on the performance and durability of 25 cm2 membrane electrode assembly (MEA) toward dynamic aging test was investigated. The tested MEAs consist of chemically stabilized membranes (AQUIVION™) with thicknesses of 30 and 50 μm, electrocatalyst – 46 %Pt/C (Tanaka) with Pt loadings of 0.25 (anode), 0.45 mg cm−2 (cathode) and gas diffusion layers 25 BC (SGL Group). The applied dynamic aging procedure is repetitive current cycling between 0.12 A cm−2 for 40 s and 0.6 A cm−2 for 20 s. The testing conditions were 80 °C, fully saturated hydrogen and air, total pressure of 2.5 atm abs. The aging procedure was regularly interrupted for evaluating the MEAs' “health” via electrochemical methods and mass spectrometry. The carbon support degradation as a function of the electrode potential, current cycling and supplied gas was studied. The effects of the Pt particles agglomeration and Pt physical loss in the active layer of the cathode on the MEAs performance degradation were individually assessed. The effect of the membrane thicknesses on the performance and durability of the PEFC was established. The reasons and stages of MEAs performance degradation were analyzed.  相似文献

This prospective study was undertaken to reassess the prognostic value of leptin during critical stages of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) and address its role in the functional staging of assisted reproductive technologies at the level of embryo quality. Serum and follicular fluid samples of 100 selected women undergoing the long IVF-ET protocol were collected for leptin and embryo quality determination. The highest serum leptin concentration (52.11 +/- 4.27 ng/ml) was observed on ovum pick up day, while follicular fluid leptin was higher than all serum samples examined (62.59 +/- 5.73 ng/ml). Serum leptin above 59.48 +/- 7.6 ng/ml was associated with 'poor' embryo quality and above 56.87 +/- 5.52 ng/ml with pregnancy failure. Elevated leptin concentrations were associated with reduced ovarian stimulation and response, follicle maturation, embryo quality and pregnancy success. Our findings suggest that leptin modulates embryo quality and may serve as a sensitive marker of IVF outcome.  相似文献
