Impact of Preferential P-Diffusion Along the Grain Boundaries on Fine-Grained Polysilicon Solar Cells

Thin-film polysilicon solar cells are a promising low-cost alternative for bulk silicon solar cells due to their reduced material thickness. Recently, we showed that the use of an amorphous silicon/polycrystalline silicon heterojunction emitter instead of a diffused homojunction emitter led to a boost in the open-circuit voltage by 90 mV. Now, we present a full evidence that shows that this improvement is related to the absence of dopant smearing along the grain boundaries. By using scanning spreading resistance microscopy, we found an enlargement of the junction area by a factor of five in case of a homojunction. The tips of the dopant spikes represent lowly doped areas with an enhanced recombination.     

Optically pumped submillimeter gas lasers and the prospects for constructing space-qualifiable LO systems

An optically pumped submillimeter laser operating in the 500 μm (600 GHz) to 100 μm (3 THz) spectral range is the primary and, at present, the only available local oscillator (LO) source for laboratory and astronomical heterodyne applications for this wavelength region. A short review of the state-of-the-art of submillimeter lasers as LO sources, with an emphasis given to receiver systems designed for airborne heterodyne observations, will be presented. The characteristics and prospects for constructing a spacequalifiable laser LO system will also be given.     

Mechanical properties of certain oriented crystalline polymers

The yield stress is a simple function of the deformation ratio in the direction of testing for specimens oriented by uniaxial or biaxial stretching or rolling. Unless the yield stress increases more rapidly than in proportion to the deformation ratio, there will be instability during tensile creep under high loads. The relative merit of various polymers differs for creep and stress relaxation. Fatigue and bend recovery are also related to the molecular structure.     

Polymer modification and synthesis using sulphenyl derivatives: 9. Addition of alkylsulphenyl chlorides to cis-1, 4-polybutadiene

Methanesulphenyl chloride and n-butanesulphenyl chloride add readily across the double bonds in cis-1,4-polybutadiene. The addition is highly regioselective so that long sequences of saturated units are formed. The products are very unstable, evolving hydrogen chloride on standing, but can be stabilized by replacing the labile chlorine atom with other nucleophiles in a phase transfer catalysed reaction.     

An Investigation of Information Systems Interoperability in UK Universities: Findings and Recommendations

This article reports on the key findings and implications of the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)-funded Online Catalogue and Repository Interoperability Study (OCRIS), a 3-month project which investigated the interoperability of Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) and Institutional Repositories (IRs) within UK universities. A series of detailed recommendations enumerate some of the ways in which they might begin to develop and support an interoperable systems landscape to the benefit of all key stakeholders.

The project combined quantitative and qualitative research methods including an online questionnaire distributed to staff within 85 universities, desk research, and two case studies conducted at the Universities of Cambridge and Glasgow.     

Christopher Strachey: Recollections of His Influence

My early research was inspired by the mathematical semantics of Scott and Strachey. Two such topics, recounted in this paper, were the fixed-point analysis of pointer loops and the expressibility of a style of functional programming introduced by Barron and Strachey.
