Prolonged recovery of desiccated adenoviral serotypes 5, 8, and 19 from plastic and metal surfaces in vitro

BACKGROUND: Prevention of the spread of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) at eye care facilities (doctors' offices, clinics, hospitals) has been a major public health goal for ophthalmology for more than 50 years. The authors explored a potentially contributing attribute of the adenovirus serotypes that cause EKC. Specifically, they investigated the capacity of different clinical and laboratory ocular serotypes (AD8, 19, and 5) to survive for extended periods of time in a desiccated state. METHODS: Twenty microliters containing 2000 plaque-forming units of different ATCC laboratory adenoviral ocular serotypes (AD8, 19, and 5) and clinical isolates (AD8 Cray, AD19 Kowalski, and AD5 McEwen) were inoculated onto 7-mm plastic disks and 6-mm aluminum foil disks and were allowed to completely desiccate. At weekly intervals up to 7 weeks, eight desiccated virus-inoculated plastic or metal disks per serotype were added to tissue culture medium, and the amount of recoverable virus was determined by plaque assay on A549 cells. RESULTS: Ocular adenoviral serotypes AD8, 19, and 5 could be recovered up to 49 days from plastic, and 35 to 49 days from metal. Sufficient virus concentrations (> 100 plaque-forming units/disk) to be clinically infectious were recovered up to 28 days. Differences in recovery among serotypes (AD19 > AD5, AD8) were demonstrated, but laboratory and clinical isolates of the same serotype were usually comparable. CONCLUSIONS: Ocular isolates of adenovirus that cause EKC are much harder than previously suspected, and the capacity to survive in a desiccated state may possibly play some role in office-based mini-epidemics of EKC.     

Terrestrial digital video broadcasting for mobile reception using OFDM

Performance of a system design for digital video broadcasting is examined with emphasis on mobile reception. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is used to achieve good bandwidth efficiency and to mitigate the intersymbol interference resulting from the channel delay spread. The resulting equivalent channel including OFDM can be modeled as a flat Rayleigh fading channel plus an interchannel interference (ICI) term due to the channel Doppler spread. This ICI term is analyzed and shown to result in an error floor. Performance improvements due to antenna diversity and trellis-coded modulation (TCM) are given. Finally, multiresolution modulation is discussed as a means of achieving graceful degradation and giving degrees of freedom for further performance improvement.This research was supported by the Multimedia Systems R & D Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd.     

Reducing retroactive interference: An interference analysis.

In 4 experiments on retroactive interference (RI), the authors varied paired-associate learning lists that produced either appreciable or negligible forgetting. When the category of the stimulus word predicted its response word category, and the response was relatively unique within its category, learning was extremely rapid, and negative transfer and RI were negligible. The more the competing primed items in the predicted response category, the slower the learning and the greater the RI. If cues and responses were unrelated, learning was very slow, and RI was appreciable. Thus, predictive relations that help stimuli retrieve unique responses greatly alter forgetting in RI paradigms. Unsupervised image-set clustering using an information theoretic framework.

In this paper, we combine discrete and continuous image models with information-theoretic-based criteria for unsupervised hierarchical image-set clustering. The continuous image modeling is based on mixture of Gaussian densities. The unsupervised image-set clustering is based on a generalized version of a recently introduced information-theoretic principle, the information bottleneck principle. Images are clustered such that the mutual information between the clusters and the image content is maximally preserved. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework for image clustering on a large image set. Information theoretic tools are used to evaluate cluster quality. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of the clustering for efficient image search and retrieval.     

Postpartum adjustment in first-time mothers: Relations between mood, maternal attitudes, and mother-infant interactions.

Self-report data were obtained from a middle-income sample of first-time mothers during pregnancy and at 1 and 3 months postpartum, and behavioral interactions between the mother and her infant were observed at 3 days and 1, 3, and 16 months postpartum. The main analyses revealed that pregnancy and postpartum mood states together explain a high proportion of the variance in mothers' maternal attitudes during the postpartum, although postpartum mood has the greater predictive power. Additionally, prior experience with children is significantly associated with maternal attitudes at all time points. Moreover, at both 1 and 3 months postpartum, depressed mothers, relative to nondepressed mothers, exhibit fewer affectionate contact behaviors toward their infants and are less likely to respond to infant vocalizations by vocalizing themselves, and, at 3 months, a higher proportion of the depressed mothers had started bottle-feeding their infants. Finally, differences in maternal behavior between depressed and nondepressed mothers during the early postpartum period were no longer apparent at 16 months postpartum. The implications of these findings are discussed with particular reference to the interrelations between prior child-care experience, mood, and maternal responsiveness. The Effect of Ozone Gas-Liquid Contacting Conditions in a Static Mixer on Microorganism Reduction

The effect of gas-liquid contacting conditions in a static mixer on ozone transfer efficiency and reduction of Bacillus subtilis spores was studied in an experimental ozone contactor. An empirical mathematical model was developed that related the transfer efficiency in the experimental system to the superficial liquid velocity in the mixer, the gas-liquid flow rate ratio and the height of the down-stream bubble column. Spore reduction was determined primarily by the dissolved ozone concentration-time (C_avgt_m) product in the reactive flow segment and was independent of the gas-liquid contacting conditions in the static mixer. In an integrated ozone contacting system, the static mixer should be designed to maximize ozone mass transfer while the reactive flow segment should be designed for efficient microorganism reduction.
