As a result of the outbreak and diffusion of SARS-CoV-2, there has been a directive to advance medical working conditions. In dentistry, airborne particles are produced through aerosolization facilitated by dental instruments. To develop methods for reducing the risks of infection in a confined environment, understanding the nature and dynamics of these droplets is imperative and timely. This study provides the first evidence of aerosol droplet formation from an ultrasonic scalar under simulated oral conditions. State-of-the-art optical flow tracking velocimetry and shadowgraphy measurements are employed to quantitatively measure the flow velocity, trajectories and size distribution of droplets produced during a dental scaling process. The droplet sizes are found to vary from 5 µm to 300 µm; these correspond to droplet nuclei that could carry viruses. The droplet velocities also vary between 1.3 m s−1 and 2.6 m s−1. These observations confirm the critical role of aerosols in the transmission of disease during dental procedures, and provide invaluable knowledge for developing protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of both dentists and patients.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the process of metamorphosis in amphibians increases the chemical activity of hydrophobic contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). We conducted an experiment in which green frog tadpoles were orally dosed with a PCB mixture; then placed into clean water to eliminate the chemicals as metamorphosis occurred. On several sampling dates before and during metamorphosis, organisms were sacrificed and analyzed to determine lipid contents and concentrations of individual PCB congeners. The majority of the PCBs studied in this experiment showed increases in chemical activity (fugacity) as a result of the physical changes that occurred during amphibian metamorphosis. A positive relationship was observed between PCB hydrophobicity and the magnitude of the fugacity increase. We determined that the fugacity of a persistent PCB congener will increase during green frog metamorphosis if its log K(ow) value is greater than 5.85. The fugacity of some of the more highly hydrophobic PCBs increased during metamorphosis by up to a factor of 4. Because of the rapid increases in chemical activity that were observed during metamorphosis, we conclude that toxicity tests involving hydrophobic organic contaminants should be conducted not only on tadpoles or adult frogs, but also on metamorphosing amphibians.  相似文献

Photoemission has been applied to study the electronic structure of YNi2B2C and related materials, with comparison of the results with the density of states generated from band structure calculations. The absence in photoemission of the predicted peak in the density of states at the Fermi level in undoped YNi2B2C, and the inconsistency of the photoemission data with a rigid-band model for the effects of Co doping on the electronic structure of YNi2-xCoxB2C are discussed. In addition, recent photoemission data from the new superconductor La3Ni2B2N3 are presented.  相似文献

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used for lining metal cans and in polycarbonate plastics, such as baby bottles. In rodents, BPA is associated with early sexual maturation, altered behavior, and effects on prostate and mammary glands. In humans, BPA is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and male sexual dysfunction in exposed workers. Food is a major exposure source. We know of no studies reporting BPA in U.S. fresh food, canned food, and food in plastic packaging in peer reviewed journals. We measured BPA levels in 105 fresh and canned foods, foods sold in plastic packaging, and in cat and dog foods in cans and plastic packaging. We detected BPA in 63 of 105 samples, including fresh turkey, canned green beans, and canned infant formula. Ninety-three of these samples were triplicates which had similar detected levels. Detected levels ranged from 0.23 to 65.0 ng/g ww and were not associated with type of food or packaging but did vary with pH. BPA levels were higher for foods of pH 5 compared to more acidic and alkaline foods. Detected levels were comparable to those found by others. Further research is indicated to determine BPA levels in U.S. food in larger, representative sampling.  相似文献

Multilayer neural networks trained with the back-propagation algorithm constitute the best example of a successful gradient based learning technique. Given an appropriate network architecture, gradient-based learning algorithms can be used to synthesize a complex decision surface that can classify high-dimensional patterns, such as handwritten characters, with minimal preprocessing. This paper reviews various methods applied to handwritten character recognition and compares them on a standard handwritten digit recognition task. Convolutional neural networks, which are specifically designed to deal with the variability of 2D shapes, are shown to outperform all other techniques. Real-life document recognition systems are composed of multiple modules including field extraction, segmentation recognition, and language modeling. A new learning paradigm, called graph transformer networks (GTN), allows such multimodule systems to be trained globally using gradient-based methods so as to minimize an overall performance measure. Two systems for online handwriting recognition are described. Experiments demonstrate the advantage of global training, and the flexibility of graph transformer networks. A graph transformer network for reading a bank cheque is also described. It uses convolutional neural network character recognizers combined with global training techniques to provide record accuracy on business and personal cheques. In this article, the methodological strengths and weaknesses of two common housing affordability indicators—the expenditure-to-income ratio and the residual income—are discussed, using data for the Belgian region of Flanders and the Netherlands. Affordability standards are used in order to distinguish the group facing affordability problems. In case of residual income, we use minimum budget standards—excluding housing—that allow for decent participation in society. For the expenditure-to-income ratio, we apply the internationally frequently used 30 % benchmark. Our comparison of the two methods results in a preference for the budget approach. Consequently, we explore the possibilities of applying the budget approach in a comparative context. We conclude by making recommendations for future research.  相似文献

The significance of temperature on aquatic species ecology and physiology is well recognized yet its effects on chemical bioaccumulation kinetics are less well understood under natural conditions. In this study, yellow perch were dosed with a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixture and allowed to depurate the chemicals over 1 year under an ambient temperature cycle characteristic of northern temperate latitudes. PCB elimination kinetics during the summer months at optimal water temperature for perch (23 degrees C) were similar to those observed in lab studies with other species reared at their optimal temperature. During the fall and winter seasons, however, elimination of only 11 PCB congeners of log K(ow) < or = 5.7 was observed and half-lives averaged > 1000 d for these PCBs. PCB elimination was again observed with the onset of spring temperatures but elimination rates averaged 2.6 times slower for readily metabolized congeners and 7.5 times slower for more persistent PCBs than observed during the summer. Bioenergetics modeling efforts predicted maximum values for respiration, fecal egestion, and growth rates during summer months but also predicted rapid declines in these chemical dilution processes during the fall and winter concurrent with changes in temperature. As temperature increased into the spring, bioenergetic rates were predicted to increase but only achieved approximately 85% of maximum rates predicted for summer peak temperatures. These results indicate that minimal chemical elimination occurs in perch when metabolic functioning falls to low maintenance levels during the fall and winter. These seasons encompass approximately 8 months of the year at northern temperate latitudes and therefore these patterns have significant consequences for understanding mechanisms of food-web biomagnification of hydrophobic organic chemicals in aquatic systems.  相似文献

Greenhouse grown tomatoes (cvs ‘Durinta’, ‘Favorita’ and ‘Liberto’) were harvested green and vine ripe. Colour measurements and chemical analyses were performed on green, post‐harvest red and vine‐ripe fruits. Partial least square (PLS) regression was applied to predict the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) by means of colour measurements (L*, a* and b*). The PLS showed that 78% of the variation in colour were able to predict 74% of the variation in FRAP value. Chemical variables and colour variables together were able to predict 88% of the variation in FRAP by means of PLS regression. Linear regression showed a high negative correlation between high values of L*, b* and FRAP, and a high positive correlation between titratable acidity, a*, hue, a*/b*, soluble solids, vitamin C, dry matter and FRAP values. Thus, colour measurements of intact tomatoes can be used as a non‐destructive method to assess total antioxidant capacity of tomatoes.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine to what degree bacterial collagenase may digest human placentae compared to equine and bovine placentae. Placenta samples from human, equine and bovine were incubated with bacterial collagenase solution at various concentrations. The degree of hydrolysis and collagen breakdown was measured by the release of total proteins and hydroxyproline into the incubation media. Also, whole placentae were injected via umbilical cord arteries with collagenase solution (200 U/ml, 200 ml total volume in human and 1000 ml in equine) and hydrolysis determined chemically and subjectively. Human and equine placental collagens were the most sensitive to collagenase digestion. Overall mean collagenase activity determined by the release of hydroxyproline from human placenta was 1.6 times and in equine placenta three times greater than in bovine placenta, while the breakdown of non-collagenous proteins remained negligible. When injected into whole placenta, the collagenase digested placentae evenly within 6-12 h. At 24 h, placentae were liquefied, although, umbilical blood vessels resisted collagenase digestion. Bacterial collagenase was highly effective in breaking down human placenta collagen. Intraplacental injections of collagenase via umbilical cord arteries may help to detach retained placenta in women as it does in mares and cows.  相似文献
