This paper presents an experimental study of scaling of polypropylene and copper tubes exposed to flowing tap water over an eight week period. The study was motivated by the recent interest in switching from copper to polymeric materials in heat exchangers and absorbers used in solar water heaters. The chemistry of the tap water is controlled to provide mildly supersaturated conditions at pH equal to 8 and 40 °C. Supersaturation is 5.0 with respect to calcite and 7.9 with respect to hydroxyapatite. These experimental conditions are a departure from the common practice of accelerated testing with distilled water highly saturated with respect to calcium carbonate and thus better represent conditions expected in solar systems. The microstructure and composition of the scale as it grows are examined with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ion chromatography. The results show scaling in tap water is slower than scaling in distilled or deionized water with a single supersaturated component. In the case of copper, prolonged exposure to tap water oxidizes the surface of the tube and subsequently affects scaling. The oxidized copper surface is more susceptible to calcium phosphate scaling and this tendency results in the higher scaling rate for copper than for polypropylene in water containing phosphate. The scaling rates for polypropylene and copper tubes are 0.8 × 10−10 and 1.7 × 10−10 (mol Ca)/(m2s), respectively.  相似文献

This paper analyses horizontal and vertical price dynamics in the EU petroleum markets. The results indicate that the cross-country price differentials have significant impact on the local price adjustments. We investigate the cross-national price spill-overs and find that the extent of the welfare transfer due to asymmetric price transmission, when analysed in a cross-country setting, is less pronounced than claimed in previous contributions in this area. We also find empirical evidence, although indirect, for the politically charged concept of “fuel tourism”, using a pan-European cross-product time series dataset.  相似文献

Cereals are an important source of sterols and stanols in the human diet. The present study underlines the effect of genotype and weather conditions in bread wheat, on total sterol and stanol content (TSS), agronomic traits, proteins and ash content under organic conditions. Variations in TSS as well as other characters between two sowing dates were observed. A broad genotypic variability was also reported since extreme genotypes differed by more than 30 mg 100 g−1 DW for TSS, with total stanol content varying twofold. Moreover, two groups of genotypes that differed in agronomic production, ash and protein content were depicted, based on their response to an increase in temperature. This result suggests that the genotypic factor prevails over the sowing date factor for determining sterol and stanol traits in wheat cultivated under organic conditions. Nevertheless, a strong interaction exists between the two factors, which can be used to drive bioaccumulation of these molecules.  相似文献

Complaints from the Domingos Martins population about sewage odours in the city made the district attorney order an impact assessment of the odours emitted by the city wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This study comprised various techniques, models and population surveys. In 2007, an odour emission model proved that the main hydrogen sulphide emitter was the aeration tank of the WWTP (13.5 g h(-1)) and such emissions, according to CALPUFF model, should be perceived in the whole Domingos Martins city centre area. In this area, 58% of those interviewed were annoyed by the WWTP odours. However, in 2009, the odour monitoring panel recorded few odour occurrences. A second population survey showed that hereafter only 20% of those interviewed were annoyed by the WWTP emissions. Odour emission and dispersion models run with 2010 data proved a drastic reduction of the WWTP aeration tank emissions and consequently the city centre was not bothered by WWTP emissions anymore. The odour emission reduction was due to the modification of the WWTP aeration tank system. Despite the odour emission reduction, houses located southeast of the WWTP were still annoyed by sewage odours. However, in this part of the town, other sources of sewage odours have been found.  相似文献

Pregnant rats were fed a high carbohydrate diet containing either 1% trilinolein or 1% trilinolein with 0.2% methyl sterculate from 18 day gestation to 21 day postpartum. The pups were weaned at 21 days and continued on the same diet for an additional 10 days. The microsomal stearyl CoA desaturase activities of the liver were effectively inhibited. Liver triglycerides showed increases in the saturated fatty acids concentrations at the expense of the corresponding monoenes. The concentration ofcis 6–7 octadecenoic acid was elevated. In liver phospholipids, the concentration of stearic acid was increased without a corresponding decrease in the oleic acid content. A drastic decrease in the nervonic acid (24∶1, n−9) concentration of liver sphingomyelin was observed. The lipids of the brain did not contain sterculic acid, and brain desaturase activity was unaffected. There was no significant change in the concentration of monoenoic acids from 16∶1 to 22∶1. However, nervonic acid was decreased by 32%. These results suggest that brain nervonic acid may be derived from a precursor other than oleic acid.  相似文献

The phase evolution occurring during the reaction between corrosive V2O5 (Tm = 690 °C) and a plasma-sprayed 7 wt.% Y2O3–ZrO2 (YSZ) coating from 700 to 900 °C has been investigated in situ by X-ray diffraction. The temperature and time of interaction between the V2O5 and YSZ coating determines the phases observed. Between 700 and 750 °C, reaction products of ZrV2O7 and YVO4 were observed within minutes of reaching the test temperature. m-ZrO2 was observed after 220 and 60 min at 700 and 750 °C, respectively. The simultaneous formation of both ZrV2O7 and YVO4 at the beginning of the reaction along with the delay of the m-ZrO2 formation suggests similar reactivity between both Zr and Y with V2O5. The weight percent of the ZrV2O7 phase began to diminish after 150 and 60 min at 700 and 750 °C, respectively. For reaction temperatures of 800 and 900 °C, there is a rapid decrease in the amount of t′-ZrO2 and a rapid increase in the amount of m-ZrO2 with reaction time. YVO4 was also observed at these reaction temperatures. SEM and TEM microstructural observations confirmed the phases detected from the in situ XRD experiments. Reactions between YSZ and V2O5 suggest that the formation of a liquid phase due to the high solubility of both zirconia and yttria in vanadia is the dominate mechanism that damages the coating. The thermal conductivity of a plasma-sprayed YSZ coating reacted with up to 1 wt.% V2O5 did not significantly change due to the small volume affected.  相似文献

Although sediment is a natural constituent of rivers, excess loading to rivers and streams is a leading cause of impairment and biodiversity loss. Remedial actions require identification of the sources and mechanisms of sediment supply. This task is complicated by the scale and complexity of large watersheds as well as changes in climate and land use that alter the drivers of sediment supply. Previous studies in Lake Pepin, a natural lake on the Mississippi River, indicate that sediment supply to the lake has increased 10-fold over the past 150 years. Herein we combine geochemical fingerprinting and a suite of geomorphic change detection techniques with a sediment mass balance for a tributary watershed to demonstrate that, although the sediment loading remains very large, the dominant source of sediment has shifted from agricultural soil erosion to accelerated erosion of stream banks and bluffs, driven by increased river discharge. Such hydrologic amplification of natural erosion processes calls for a new approach to watershed sediment modeling that explicitly accounts for channel and floodplain dynamics that amplify or dampen landscape processes. Further, this finding illustrates a new challenge in remediating nonpoint sediment pollution and indicates that management efforts must expand from soil erosion to factors contributing to increased water runoff.  相似文献

The effect of feeding newly weaned pigs acidified liquid diets was investigated. The control diet was acidified to about pH 4 with lactic acid (LA). A second diet of the same formulation was acidified to about pH 4 by fermentation with Pediococcus acidilactici (PA). Forty‐eight weaner pigs (weight 7 kg±1 kg, age 24±4 days) were allocated to the two dietary treatments according to a randomised block design and fed ad libitum for 28 days. Food intake, daily gain and water intake were recorded, and a microbial assessment of the liquid diet was conducted. Reducing pH<4.0 in either of the liquid diets was effective in eliminating coliform bacteria. There were no significant differences in any of the performance parameters measured. The average daily liveweight gain overall was 474 and 496±17.8 g d−1 for PA and LA, respectively, with a feed conversion ratio overall of 1.15 and 1.11±0.025 for PA and LA, respectively. Fermentation of liquid diets for newly weaned piglets could provide a more cost effective means of acidifying diets than the use of organic acids. Reducing the pH of the liquid diet to 4.00 by fermentation with Pediococcus acidilactici was a cost effective method of eliminating enteropathogens and spoilage organisms from the diet. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
