The prediction of the state-of-discharge of numerous types of Zn-Ag2O button cells from six international manufacturers has been investigated using the impedance technique over an extended frequency range. The frequency responses at various states-of-discharge are presented and it is shown that the changes in impedance which result from discharging provide several potential parameters for the state-ofdischarge prediction. The complex impedance plot of the undischarged cells usually shows a fairly welldefined semicircle at high frequencies and a straight line with a slope between 40 and 50° at low frequencies. As discharge proceeds, the diameter of the semicircle increases and the overlap between the semicircle and the low-frequency straight line increases. The most attractive method would be to determine a parameter such as a characteristic relaxation frequency in the complex impedance plot. Unfortunately, no unambiguous characteristic parameter can be extracted due to the non-ideal shape of the impedance response at high frequencies. The determination of the diameter of the high-frequency semicircle has been faced with the same difficulties. The most reliable test was found to be the determination of either the phase of the impedance, or a corrected phase taken from the high-frequency intercept. The proposed prediction is a go/no go indication on the basis of one- or two-frequency measurements for or, respectively. The selection is made at 20–40% state-of-discharge. The charge withdrawn is negligibly small and the time of the test is between 1 and 100 s depending on the type of cell. A calibration is necessary for each cell dimension and each manufacturer. Some 10–16% of the types of cells investigated could not be selected successfully, mainly because of too large a dispersion of the electrical characteristics of the cells, especially for small newly developed types, and of the similarity of the ( and values in the low and high state-of-discharge in the appropriate frequency range. The latter difficulty arises from the difference of the frequency response between the undischarged and the partly discharged cells occurring at high frequencies.This is the second of a series of papers dedicated to Professor Ernest Yeager on the ocasion of his 60th birthday.  相似文献

DIVA is an expert system for turbine generator diagnosis. Its aim is to help a plant operator interpret vibration evolution to diagnose developing faults. Interpretation of vibration evolution is primarily a recognition process which is achieved by a particular model of heuristic classification. DIVA tries to recognize the observed situation among a hierarchy of typical situations.The purpose of this paper is to present the model we used for heuristic classification, based on prototypes. Prototypes represent typical problem situations and may also be seen as experts with special knowledge of what to do in such situations. We argue that this model presents significant advantages to deal with complex problems such as vibration surveillance.  相似文献

Leukemic cell growth in the bone marrow (BM) induces a very stressful condition. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), a key component of this BM niche, are affected in several ways with unfavorable consequences on hematopoietic stem cells favoring leukemic cells. These alterations in MSC during B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) have not been fully studied. In this work, we have compared the modifications that occur in an in vitro leukemic niche (LN) with those observed in MSC isolated from B-ALL patients. MSC in this LN niche showed features of a senescence process, i.e., altered morphology, increased senescence-associated β-Galactosidase (SA-βGAL) activity, and upregulation of p53 and p21 (without p16 expression), cell-cycle arrest, reduced clonogenicity, and some moderated changes in stemness properties. Importantly, almost all of these features were found in MSC isolated from B-ALL patients. These alterations rendered B-ALL cells susceptible to the chemotherapeutic agent dexamethasone. The senescent process seems to be transient since when leukemic cells are removed, normal MSC morphology is re-established, SA-βGAL expression is diminished, and MSC are capable of re-entering cell cycle. In addition, few cells showed low γH2AX phosphorylation that was reduced to basal levels upon cultivation. The reversibility of the senescent process in MSC must impinge important biological and clinical significance depending on cell interactions in the bone marrow at different stages of disease progression in B-ALL.  相似文献

Background

Past studies on smokers'' risk perception have produced mixed results. We endorsed a new approach to assess smokers'' perceptions of risk by asking them to estimate threshold values for the cancer risk associated with daily consumption of tobacco and number of smoking years. We expected that many smokers would endorse a “risk denial” attitude, with threshold estimates higher than their own smoking consumption and duration.

Methodology

A French national telephone survey (n = 3820; 979 current smokers) included several questions about smoking behaviours and related beliefs.

Results

Among current smokers, 44% considered that smoking can cause cancer only for a daily consumption higher than their own consumption, and an additional 20% considered that the cancer risk becomes high only for a smoking duration higher than their own. Most smokers also agreed with other “risk denial” statements (“smoking is not more dangerous than air pollution,” “some people smoke their whole life but never get sick”). Those who considered they smoked too few cigarettes to be at risk were less likely to report personal fear of smoking related cancer.

Conclusion

Risk denial is quite widespread among smokers and does not simply reflect a lack of information about health risks related to tobacco. Fully informing smokers about their risks may necessitate changing the way they process information to produce beliefs and limiting their capacity to generate self exempting beliefs.  相似文献

Hydrogenase I from the hyperthermophilic bacterium Aquifex aeolicus is a good candidate for biotechnological devices thanks to its ability to oxidize hydrogen at high temperature, even in the presence of oxygen and CO. In order to enhance the enzyme stability and the catalytic efficiency, we investigated the hydrogen oxidation process with hydrogenase I embedded in a physiological-like environment. Hydrogenase I partners in the metabolic chain, namely membrane quinone and cytochrome b, were purified and fully characterized. The complex hydrogenase I–cytochrome b was inserted into liposomes. Surface Plasmon Resonance revealed that quinone took part in the stabilization of the complex. By use of molecular modelization and electrochemistry analysis, enzyme stability has been demonstrated to be stronger and enzymatic efficiency to be five times higher when hydrogenase is embedded into the liposomes. This result raises the possibility of using hydrogenases as biocatalysts in fuel cells.  相似文献

Vitamin A deficiency is a public health issue in developing countries and promoting dietary carotenoids as precursors is a promising strategy. However, carotenoids present in numerous fruits and vegetables are unstable and poorly bioaccessible. This study evaluated these two parameters during in vitro digestion of carotenoids and retinoids from carrot juice, raw and cooked spinach, micronutrient-fortified flour and standards without food matrix. Standards were unstable whereas vitamin A from fortified flour and native food carotenoids were generally better protected by the food matrix (30–100% remaining versus 7–30% for standards). Hydrothermal cooking did not influence spinach carotenoid digestive stability but decreased their contents, phenomenon compensated by a significantly better micellarisation from 15-fold for β-carotene to 72-fold for lutein. Finally, carrot juice provided the greatest amount of bioaccessible provitamin A with 1850 μg/100 g dry matter (DM) versus 790 and 80 μg/100 g DM in cooked and raw spinach, respectively.  相似文献

To evaluate the impacts and capabilities of large-scale compressed gas energy storage for mitigating wind intermittency, dynamic system models for compressed air energy storage and compressed hydrogen energy storage inside salt caverns have been developed. With the experimental data from air storage in a salt cavern in Huntorf, Germany, the cavern model has been verified. Both daily and seasonal simulation results suggest that with the same size wind farm and salt cavern, a compressed hydrogen energy storage system could better complement the wind intermittency and could also achieve load shifting on a daily and seasonal time scale. Moreover, the hydrogen produced in the compressed hydrogen energy storage system could also be dispatched as a fuel to accommodate zero emission transportation for up to 14,000 fuel cell vehicles per day while achieving seasonal load shifting.  相似文献

A method is proposed, for low-temperature geothermal systems, for calculating the aquifer temperature and relative proportions of mixed thermal and shallow groundwaters from carbonate-evaporite environments. The fluid is assumed to be in chemical equilibrium with anhydrite and chalcedony in the aquifer, and mixed with diluted waters during its ascent. An attempt has been made to establish a relationship between reservoir temperature, the aqueous sulfate and silica contents of the mixed fluid, the proportion of the thermal end-member and the temperature of the adiabatic mixture. The method calculates mineral solubilities in the field context, calibrated on representative thermal springs. The method also considers the effects of conductive cooling.  相似文献
