Dielectric relaxation and electrical conduction at low field of mineral-filled epoxy

Dielectric properties and conduction of the epoxy and its composites were measured over the temperature range — 20 to 70°C and the frequency range 10^–4-10^–1 Hz. Dielectric properties were obtained by performing Fouriertransforms on the charging and discharging curves. The resulting isothermal frequency spectra of dielectric constants and dielectric loss factors were analysed using the Cole-Cole law to obtain the activation energy for each material. The activation energies were also obtained for isothermal d.c. current. Current density-electric field-temperature characteristics are obtained for field levels up to 60 kV cm^–1, with step excitation of the applied field and currents recorded after a delay time of 10 min. Current density and electric field were computed and plotted for constant temperature. The linear (ohmic) curves were obtained for fields up to about 60 kV cm^–1 for temperatures up to about 20 °C. The non-linearity at the higher fields and temperatures did not imply the occurrence of non-ionic conduction. It has been demonstrated that both electric conduction and relaxation behaviour were ionic and could be fit by the Nakajima model for the unfilled epoxy and the Taylor model for the composites.     

Self-adjusting dual-reading digital angle transducer

This article examines the design of the exact readout system of a digital angle transducer in which the possible quasi-sinusoidality of the angle sensor and the simplification of the conversion unit are automatically compensated for by additional devices so as to not significantly affect the accuracy with which angular position is converted into code. Health and education: alternative courses for the development of nursing personnel

The disposition behavior of trientine, a selective copper-chelating drug for Wilson's disease, and its metabolites in normal patients with Wilson's disease and rats were studied. A high concentration of metabolites appeared in blood samples of patients and rats in the early stage after administration of trientine. Furthermore, large amount of trientine metabolites were excreted into the urine of patients. These results suggest that trientine is remarkably subjected to a first-pass effect. The drug concentration area under the curve (AUC) of the unchanged form and the metabolites of trientine in patients was not dependent on the administered dosage. It seems that the absorption process is an important factor for the disposition behavior of trientine, we have also investigated the uptake characteristics of trientine by rat intestinal brush-border membrane vesicles. The uptake characteristics of trientine were similar to the physiological polyamines, spermine and spermidine. The uptake rate of trientine was dose-dependently inhibited by spermine and spermidine. Moreover, spermine competitively inhibited the uptake of trientine with a Ki value of 18.6 muM. This value is very close to the Km value for spermine (30.4 muM). These data suggested that the uptake mechanism of trientine in rat small intestinal brush-border membrane vesicles was almost identical to that of spermine and spermidine, and that the physiological polyamines seem to have the ability to inhibit the absorption of trientine from the gastrointestinal tract.     

Peanut and Walnut Rancidity: Effects of Oxygen Concentration and Relative Humidity

Accelerated tests for oxidative rancidity of blanched peanuts, blanched dry-roasted peanuts, blanched oil-roasted peanuts and shelled Persian walnuts were performed at high and low oxygen content at controlled intermediate and low relative humidities. The results confirmed and quantified the importance of oxygen content, relative humidity and roasting process in the oxidative rancidity of peanuts and walnuts. There is a potential to extend shelf-life of roasted peanuts and walnuts by edible coatings with low oxygen permeability or nitrogen-flushing with oxygen barrier packaging. Static headspace chromatography was useful to monitor oxidative rancidity in walnuts and roasted peanuts.     

Detection of antibiotic resistance in Enterococcus sp. Comparison of GPS-TA (BioMérieux-Vitek), Uniscept MIC-3 (bioMérieux-Vitek) and conventional methods

BACKGROUND: The treatment of severe enterococcus infections requires synergism of a beta-lactamic or glycopeptide and a aminoglycoside, but when resistance to first one or high-level resistance to aminoglycosides are present, synergism would be lost. We compared the adequacy of two commercially available systems to detect antibiotic resistance. METHODS: We studied 158 isolates of Enterococcus sp., with high-level resistance to gentamicin (40 isolates) and streptomycin (89 isolates), resistance to ciprofloxacin (34 isolates), resistance to ampicillin (7 isolates) and with intermediate susceptibility to vancomycin (3 isolates). No one was beta-lactamase producer by Cefinase disk method. We use disk diffusion as reference technique to detect high-level streptomycin resistance. The susceptibility to the remainder antibiotics was studied by agar dilution method, according to NCCLS. We studied the accuracy of GPS-TA cards and Uniscept MIC-3 in relation to the degree of agreement with conventional means, following FDA criteria. RESULTS: Essential agreement for MIC was less than 90 with MIC-3 for ampicillin (81.5%) and ciprofloxacin (71.3%). Categorical agreement rate was less than 90% (76.4%) and major error rate was higher than 3% (10.9%) with the use of MIC-3 for ciprofloxacin. Very major errors for ampicillin, vancomycin and ciprofloxacin were not produced by any system. The very major error rates for high level resistance to gentamicin and streptomycin with GPS-TA card were 5 and 15.7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We do not recommend the use of the Uniscept MIC-3 panel with visual reading to detect susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. Detection of high levels of aminoglucoside resistance by GPS-TA card should be supplemented with conventional techniques because of the high rate of major error. Due to the low number of strains that have been studied, we can not assure the suitability of these systems to detect ampicillin or vancomycin resistance.     

Vasoactive intestinal peptide-induced prolactin release in hypothyroid patients

VIP is an established prolactin-releasing factor. VIP gene expression at the anterior pituitary level and the central nervous system is regulated by thyroid hormones. On the other hand, primary hypothyroidism leads in many cases to amenorrhea, galactorrhea and hyperprolactinemia. In this study we assessed prolactin responses to VIP (75 micrograms iv infusion over 12 min) in a group of six hypothyroid women (mean age +/- SE, 38.8 +/- 3.3 yr; serum TSH levels, mU/L, 116.3 +/- 23.9), before treatment and after normalization of thyroid hormone levels during thyroxine (T4) replacement therapy (100-150 micrograms/day over 12-16 weeks). Furthermore, we assessed if VIP infusion had any effects on serum GH levels in these patients. In hypothyroid women, VIP infusion increased serum prolactin concentrations with peak levels being attained at 15 min (28.8 +/- 3.4 micrograms/L). The Area Under the Curve (AUC) was 1921 +/- 103 micrograms/L/2h. PRL responses to VIP were unchanged after T4 therapy, both in terms of peak levels (28.7 +/- 2.2 micrograms/L, NS) and of AUC (2079 +/- 261 micrograms/L/2h, NS). Serum GH levels were unaffected by VIP administration. In conclusion our study shows that, in hypothyroid patients, restoration of normal thyroid hormone levels by thyroxine replacement therapy does not affect lactotroph responsiveness to VIP. Therefore, our data do not support the hypothesis that VIP might contribute to the hypothyroid-induced hyperprolactinemia seen in man.     

Electrophysiological dissociation of recency and recognition memory

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded during the test phases of two experiments. In experiment 1, subjects first studied two consecutively presented word lists. At test, they were presented with pairs of words, and were required to judge which word had been presented most recently. The test pairs were composed of two previously studied words, one drawn from each list, (Old+Old pairs), one previously studied and one new word (Old+New pairs), or two unstudied words (New+New pairs). At temporo-parietal electrodes, ERPs to Old+Old and Old+New pairs were both reliably more positive-going than those to New+New pairs. At electrode sites overlying prefrontal cortex, ERPs to Old+Old pairs attracting correct recency judgements were more positive, from around 300 ms onwards, than those elicited by the other classes of item, which did not differ from one another. In experiment 2, the test task was changed to one that required discrimination between Old+New items on the one hand, and Old+Old and New+New pairs on the other. ERPs to Old+Old and Old+New pairs once again differed from those to New+New pairs at temporo-parietal sites, but no differences were evident between the ERPs from frontal electrode sites. In line with the evidence from lesion studies, these findings suggest that judgements of relative recency depend upon processes, supported by the prefrontal cortex, additional to those that are necessary for recognition memory. They further suggest that these processes are activated rapidly and selectively in response to pairs of studied items when these must be discriminated on the basis of their relative recency of occurrence.
