Bacterial biofilms are difficult to eradicate because of reduced antibiotic sensitivity and altered metabolic processes; thus, the development of new approaches to biofilm eradication is urgently needed. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and quaternary ammonium cations (QACs) are distinct, yet well‐known, classes of antibacterial compounds. By mapping the general regions of charge and hydrophobicity of QACs onto AMP structures, we designed a small library of QACs to serve as simple AMP mimics. In order to explore the role that cationic charge plays in biofilm eradication, structures were varied with respect to cationic character, distribution of charge, and alkyl side chain. The reported compounds possess minimum biofilm eradication concentrations (MBEC) as low as 25 μM against Gram‐positive biofilms, making them the most active anti‐biofilm structures reported to date. These potent AMP mimics were synthesized in 1–2 steps and hint at the minimal structural requirements for biofilm destruction. 相似文献

The initial oxidation behavior of ZrB2–30 vol% SiC was analyzed with the goal of understanding any relationship to the variable oxidation performance observed at longer times. A box furnace was used to oxidize samples for times as short as 10 s and up to 100 min at 1500°C in air. The samples were characterized using mass change, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy to explore the oxidation behavior. The presence of borosilicate glass and ZrO2 was observed on the surface at times as early as 10 s. Bubble formation in the borosilicate glass was observed after 30 s of oxidation and is attributed to uneven distribution of the glass. The impact of surface roughness on oxidation was also explored and found to be negligible for times greater than 30 s. 相似文献

Influence of nucleation seeding on the hydration kinetics and compressive strength of alkali activated slag paste 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Addition of pure calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) to alkali-activated slag (AAS) paste resulted in an earlier and larger hydration rate peak measured with isothermal calorimetry and a much higher compressive strength after 1 d of curing. This is attributed to a nucleation seeding effect, as was previously established for Portland cement and tricalcium silicate pastes. The acceleration of AAS hydration by seeding indicates that the early hydration rate is controlled by nucleation and growth. For the experiments reported here, the effect of C–S–H seed on the strength development of AAS paste between 1 d and 14 d of curing depended strongly on the curing method. With sealed curing the strength continued to increase, but with underwater curing the strength decreased due to cracking. This cracking is attributed to differential stresses arising from chemical and autogenous shrinkage. Similar experiments were also performed on Portland cement paste. 相似文献

This paper surveys and analyzes the state of the art of agent-mediated electronic commerce (e-commerce), concentrating particularly on the business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) aspects. From the consumer buying behavior perspective, agents are being used in the following activities: need identification, product brokering, buyer coalition formation, merchant brokering, and negotiation. The roles of agents in B2B e-commerce are discussed through the business-to-business transaction model that identifies agents as being employed in partnership formation, brokering, and negotiation. Having identified the roles for agents in B2C and B2B e-commerce, some of the key underpinning technologies of this vision are highlighted. Finally, we conclude by discussing the future directions and potential impediments to the wide-scale adoption of agent-mediated e-commerce. 相似文献

In this paper, we consider the generic problem of how a network of physically distributed, computationally constrained devices can make coordinated decisions to maximise the effectiveness of the whole sensor network. In particular, we propose a new agent-based representation of the problem, based on the factor graph, and use state-of-the-art DCOP heuristics (i.e., DSA and the max-sum algorithm) to generate sub-optimal solutions. In more detail, we formally model a specific real-world problem where energy-harvesting sensors are deployed within an urban environment to detect vehicle movements. The sensors coordinate their sense/sleep schedules, maintaining energy neutral operation while maximising vehicle detection probability. We theoretically analyse the performance of the sensor network for various coordination strategies and show that by appropriately coordinating their schedules the sensors can achieve significantly improved system-wide performance, detecting up to 50 % of the events that a randomly coordinated network fails to detect. Finally, we deploy our coordination approach in a realistic simulation of our wide area surveillance problem, comparing its performance to a number of benchmarking coordination strategies. In this setting, our approach achieves up to a 57 % reduction in the number of missed vehicles (compared to an uncoordinated network). This performance is close to that achieved by a benchmark centralised algorithm (simulated annealing) and to a continuously powered network (which is an unreachable upper bound for any coordination approach). 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of the 14 and 6 positive spikes (PS) electroencephalographic (EEG) phenomenon is not well established. This study was performed to provide further data regarding the clinical correlates of the PS, particularly attention-deficit/hyperactivity and somatic symptoms. METHODS: Diagnostic information gathered through structured interviews was compared among four groups of psychiatric inpatients aged 4-17 years who underwent an EEG examination over a 2-year period. Groups consisted of patients with: 1) 14 and 6 PS (n = 25); 2) epileptic discharges (n = 29); 3) slow-wave abnormalities (n = 23); and 4) a normal EEG group age and sex matched to the 14 and 6 PS group (n = 25). RESULTS: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms were significantly more frequent in the PS group (chi 2 = 2.96, p < .05) compared to the other three groups combined. Although somatic symptoms were not increased in the 14 and 6 PS group, anxiety symptoms tended to occur more in this group (chi 2 = 3.50, p < .06). CONCLUSIONS: The PS profile appears associated with ADHD symptoms. Possible treatment implications of this finding (e.g., use of anticonvulsants in ADHD patients with PS) need to be explored. 相似文献

Differentiation inducers selected for their low cytotoxic and genotoxic potential could be of major value in chemoprevention and maintenance therapy. We focus here on phenylacetate, a naturally occurring plasma component recently shown to affect the growth and differentiation of established neoplasms in experimental models. The ability of phenylacetate to prevent carcinogenesis by the chemotherapeutic hypomethylating drug 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5AzadC) was tested in vitro and in mice. Transient exposure of immortalized, but poorly tumorigenic ras-transformed 4C8 fibroblasts to 5AzadC resulted in neoplastic transformation manifested by loss of contact inhibition of growth, acquired invasiveness, and increased tumorigenicity in athymic mice. The latter was associated with elevation in ras expression and a decline in collagen biosynthesis. These profound phenotypic and molecular changes were prevented by a simultaneous treatment with phenylacetate. Protection from 5AzadC carcinogenesis by phenylacetate was: (a) highly efficient despite DNA hypomethylation by both drugs, (b) free of cytotoxic and genotoxic effects, (c) stable after treatment was discontinued, and (d) reproducible in vivo. Whereas athymic mice bearing 4C8 cells developed fibrosarcomas following a single i.p. injection with 5AzadC, tumor development was significantly inhibited by systemic treatment with nontoxic doses of phenylacetate. Phenylacetate and its precursor suitable for oral administration, phenylbutyrate, may thus represent a new class of chemopreventive agents, the efficacy and safety of which should be further evaluated. 相似文献

Electric birefringence studies have been conducted on six samples of methyl cellulose in the molecular weight range 3 × 104 to 1.5 × 105. Using pulsed electric fields, both the amplitudes and rates of the transient birefringence induced in these solutions have been analysed. For molecular weights below 2 × 103, the molecules are represented by rigid rods. Above this value increasing flexibility is evident. This can conveniently be seen through reduced electrical parameters, defined herein, which are obtained from a combination of the electrical and geometrical properties of the molecules. These parameters are apparently very sensitive to flexibility in the near-rod regime. It demonstrates the utility of electro-optic experiments in which both the electrical and geometrical data are obtained simultaneously. The persistence length concept does not appear to be adequate when rotary relaxation times are interpreted through it using current equations. 相似文献
