Higher compressive strengths and the Bauschinger effect in conformally passivated copper nanopillars

Our current understanding of size-dependent strength in nano- and microscale crystals is centered around the idea that the overall strength is determined by the stress required to propagate dislocation sources. The nature and type of these dislocation sources is the subject of extensive debate, however, one commonality amongst these theories is that the ability of the free surface to absorb dislocations is a necessary condition for transition to a source controlled regime. In this work we demonstrate that atomic layer deposition (ALD) of conformal 5–25 nm thick TiO2/Al2O3 coatings onto electroplated single crystalline copper pillars with diameters ranging from 75 nm to 1 μm generally inhibits the ability of a dislocation to vanish at the free surface. Uniaxial compression tests reveal increased strength and hardening relative to uncoated pillars at equivalent diameters, as well as a notable recovery of plastic strain during unloading, i.e. the Bauschinger effect. Unlike previous reports, these coated pillars retained the stochastic signature in their stress–strain curves. We explain these observations within the framework of a size-dependent strength theory based on a single arm source model, dislocation theory, and microstructural analysis by transmission electron microscopy. 相似文献

The morphology of early-age C–S–H, often referred to as outer product or low-density C–S–H, is generally accepted to be fibrillar and forms mainly during the early stages of hydration. This paper reports the effect of drying on the microstructure in young tricalcium silicate paste, which provides insight into the mechanism that leads to the fibrillar morphology. During the first few days after C3S is mixed with water, the morphology of C–S–H is more affected by drying rate than by relative humidity. This sensitivity is most apparent at partial pressures greater than 85%. During this time, the fibrillar C–S–H product can be suppressed by drying C3S paste samples very slowly prior to imaging. This approach is interpreted as evidence that this fibrillar morphology, which naturally form over time, grow as tiny colloidal particles that rearrange during the early stages of hydration, leading to well-established larger scale morphologies. 相似文献

In this paper we report the results of an effort to develop a design tool to optimise any solar cell with thin-film structure. An optical admittance analysis which takes into account the interference effects in the multilayer thin-film system is discussed. This method provides a technique for calculating the optical properties of a thin-film device with a multilayer configuration. It also allows us to explore the nature and magnitude of optical losses in p-i-n type single or multi-junction a-Si : H solar cells, and to optimise the structure of such cells to utilise enhanced interference effects to obtain the maximum possible utilisation of incident solar radiation. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been used to partially characterize eight selected asphalts. This report describes the initial efforts in this endeavor. Proton and carbon spectra have been collected and analyzed for percent aromatic content as well as aromatic substitution. DEFT results, chemical shifts and literature precedent have been used to assign the major resonances in the aliphatic region to chemical entities. The article proposes a theoretical framework in which moral reasoning about mediated crime and punishment is defined and combined with existing, affect-driven entertainment theory to yield an integrated theory of enjoyment. The authors analyze how crime dramas serve as statements about justice and then address how moral deliberation about the propriety of those statements impacts enjoyment. The authors report research findings to support the analysis of cognitive processing during crime dramas distinct from affective processing. The long‐term success of photosynthetic organisms has resulted in their global superabundance, which is sustained by their widespread, continual mass‐production of the integral proteins that photocatalyze the chemical processes of natural photosynthesis. Here, a fast, general method to assemble multilayer films composed of one such photocatalytic protein complex, Photosystem I (PSI), onto a variety of substrates is reported. The resulting films, akin to the stacked thylakoid structures of leaves, consist of a protein matrix that is permeable to electrochemical mediators and contain a high concentration of photoelectrochemically active redox centers. These multilayer assemblies vastly outperform previously reported monolayer films of PSI in terms of photocurrent production when incorporated into an electrochemical system, and it is shown that these photocatalytic properties increase with the film thickness. These results demonstrate how the assembly of micron‐thick coatings of PSI on non‐biological substrates yields a biohybrid ensemble that manifests the photocatalytic activity of the film’s individual protein constituents, and represent significant progress toward affordable, biologically‐inspired renewable energy conversion platforms. 相似文献

We quantify the variation in resolution due to anisotropy caused by oblique X-ray incidence in indirect flat-panel detectors for computed tomography breast imaging systems. We consider a geometry and detector type utilized in breast computed tomography (CT) systems currently being developed. Our methods rely on MANTIS, a combined X-ray, electron, and optical Monte Carlo transport open source code. The physics models are the most accurate available in general-purpose Monte Carlo packages in the diagnostic energy range. We consider maximum-obliquity angles of 10deg and 13deg at the centers of the 30 and 40 cm detector edges, respectively, and 16deg at the corner of the detector. Our results indicate that blur is asymmetric and that the resolution properties vary significantly with the angle (or location) of incidence. Our results suggest that the asymmetry can be as high as a factor of 2.6 between orthogonal directions. Anisotropy maps predicted by MANTIS provide an understanding of the effect that such variations have on the imaging system and allow more accurate modeling and optimization of breast CT systems. These maps of anisotropy across the detector could lead to improved reconstruction and help motivate physics-based strategies for computer detection of breast lesions. 相似文献

Optically pumped FIR lasers are currently in use in both frequency metrology and laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy programs in the NBS Boulder labs. The laser for use in frequency metrology is a CW 71 μm methyl alcohol waveguide laser with over 100 mW output for frequency synthesis. Another laser with an intracavity absorption cell for laser spectroscopy has been constructed and is nearly transversely pumped. Cattle access to streams has been linked globally with degradation of stream water quality, driven largely by bank erosion and resultant instream, fine sediment deposition. The majority of evidence on such effects is however based in arid and semiarid regions of the United States and Australia, with few studies relating to cool temperate climates such as Northwest Europe. In this study, “Quorer” resuspendable sediment samples were taken from riffle geomorphic units upstream (control) and at two points downstream (pressure and recovery) of cattle access points in headwater streams in agricultural catchments in Ireland to assess levels of deposited stream sediment. Samples were taken in April/May (2016) prior to the grazing season and in October (2016) at the end of the grazing season. Sites in good‐high ecological status catchments and less than good ecological status catchments were included in the study. Higher levels of sediment were found downstream of cattle access points in both good‐high status and less than good status catchments; however, the impacts of access points were spatially confined to, in most cases, the area immediately downstream of the point of access. There was a strong correlation between deposited sediment mass and organic matter (OM) mass, with levels of OM increasing linearly with deposited sediment mass. Levels of measured sediment were negatively correlated with riparian habitat health (measured using a qualitative habitat assessment). The results of this study highlight the need for measures to prevent cattle access to headwater streams where access points can be many in order to manage local habitat quality and downstream water quality issues. 相似文献
