Phase change materials (PCMs) are attractive for use in thermal energy storage applications and thermal regulation/control due to their high-energy storage density over a small temperature range. The direct use of phase change materials for energy storage and/or heat transfer applications has been limited due to the low thermal conductivity of the PCM particularly when solidifying on the heat transfer surface. A Phase change slurry (PCS) consists of small micro-encapsulated PCM particles suspended in a carrier fluid which enhances the heat transfer to the PCM. The PCS can serve not only as the thermal storage media but also as the heat transfer fluid, and hence may have many potentially important applications including in the field of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, solar energy and heat exchangers. A test system to examine PCS performance in residential thermal energy storage applications has been developed to both observe and characterise the thermal processes that occur in a thermal store with a helical coil heat exchanger. These test results will be used to improve the system design and identify limitations when used for intermittent application.  相似文献

The use of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in regenerative medicine is a potential major advance for the treatment of many medical conditions, especially with the use of allogeneic therapies where the cells from a single donor can be used to treat ailments in many patients. Such cells must be grown attached to surfaces and for large scale production, it is shown that stirred bioreactors containing ~200 μm particles (microcarriers) can provide such a surface. It is also shown that the just suspended condition, agitator speed N JS, provides a satisfactory condition for cell growth by minimizing the specific energy dissipation rate, εT, in the bioreactor whilst still meeting the oxygen demand of the cells. For the cells to be used for therapeutic purposes, they must be detached from the microcarriers before being cryopreserved. A strategy based on a short period (~7 min) of very high εT, based on theories of secondary nucleation, is effective at removing >99% cells. Once removed, the cells are smaller than the Kolmogorov scale of turbulence and hence not damaged. This approach is shown to be successful for culture and detachment in 4 types of stirred bioreactors from 15 mL to 5 L.  相似文献

Neglected tropical diseases caused by parasitic infections are an ongoing and increasing concern. They are a burden to human and animal health, having the most devastating effect on the world′s poorest countries. Building upon our previously reported triazole analogues, in this study we describe the synthesis and biological testing of other novel heterocyclic acetogenin‐inspired derivatives, namely 3,5‐isoxazoles, furoxans, and furazans. Several of these compounds maintain low‐micromolar levels of inhibition against Trypanosoma brucei, whilst having no observable inhibitory effect on mammalian cells, leading to the possibility of novel lead compounds for selective treatment.  相似文献

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases are highly desired biocatalysts owing to their ability to catalyse a wide variety of chemically challenging C?H activation reactions. The CYP102A subfamily of enzymes are natural catalytically self‐sufficient proteins consisting of a haem and FMN‐FAD reductase domain fused in a single‐component system. They catalyse the oxygenation of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids to produce primarily ω?1, ω?2 and ω?3 hydroxy acids. These monooxygenases have potential applications in biotechnology; however, their substrate range is still limited and there is a continued need to add diversity to this class of biocatalysts. Herein, we present the characterisation of two new members of this class of enzymes, CYP102A25 (BMar) from Bacillus marmarensis and CYP102A26 (PHal) from Pontibacillus halophilus, both of which express readily in a recombinant bacterial host. BMar exhibits the highest activity toward myristic acid and shows moderate activity towards unsaturated fatty acids. PHal exhibits broader activity towards mid‐chain‐saturated (C14–C18) and unsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, PHal shows good regioselectivity for the hydroxylation of myristic acid, targeting the ω?2 position for C?H activation.  相似文献

Cascade impactors are commonly used to assess the size characteristics of aerosols in toxicology and pharmaceutical applications. These aerosol instruments have been developed and refined over decades. However, a number of questions remain related to impactor performance, including the influence of electrostatic charge on measured size distributions. The objective of this study was to develop a validated CFD model of the Mark II Andersen cascade impactor (ACI) and apply this model to evaluate the effects of particle charge on deposition. The flow field was simulated using a commercial CFD code for incompressible laminar and transitional flows. Particle trajectories and deposition were evaluated using a well tested Lagrangian tracking approach that accounts for impaction, sedimentation, diffusion, and electrostatic attraction. Particle charge levels typical of dry powder inhaler (DPI) and metered dose inhaler (MDI) aerosols were considered for a particle size range of 0.3–12 μm. As a model validation, computational predictions of cutoff d50 diameters for each of the eight ACI stages were found to be within 10% difference of existing experimental and manufacturer data. Results indicated that charges consistent with DPI and MDI aerosols increased deposition fraction in Stages 0–3 by up to 30% and increased deposition fraction in Stages 4–7 by up to an order of magnitude. For Stages 0–3, both DPI and MDI charges reduced the d50 value by approximately 10% or less. In contrast, charged aerosols reduced the d50 values in Stages 4 and 5 by 200% and 60%, respectively. All charged submicrometer aerosols considered deposited in Stages 6 and 7. Increasing the particle charge by an order of magnitude from DPI to MDI values had a relatively small effect on further decreasing the cutoff size of each stage. In conclusion, these results can be used to approximate the actual aerodynamic diameter of a charged pharmaceutical aerosol based on measurements in a standard ACI. Future applications of the developed ACI model include evaluating the influence of space charge on deposition and quantifying the effects of aerosol condensation and evaporation on size assessment.  相似文献

Members of The Speech Project, at Oxford Brookes University, have been experimenting with alternative structures for ‘goal-seeking’ dialogues. A dialogue prototyping system has been developed that can instantiate different dialogue structures kept on file. These become active after being installed using dynamic data structures. Input is achieved using speech recognition for a small range of words, and output is in the form of pre-recorded speech messages. The dialogues thus created employ a new approach, and replace the usual menustructure with a simpler question-answer process.

The nature of dialogues using computer aided telephony is analysed, and then the work done by members of The Speech Project on an alternative approach using a simpler dialogue structure is described.  相似文献
