Enzymatically treated cellulose was dissolved in a NaOH/ZnO solvent system and mixed together with poly(ethylene‐co‐acrylic acid) (PE‐co‐AA) or poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) (PAA‐co‐AA) polymers, in order to improve the properties of dissolved cellulose and to prepare homogeneous cellulose‐based blends for films and coatings. The solution stage properties of the blends were evaluated by rheological methods and the precipitated dry blends were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Paperboard coating tests done at laboratory scale showed dissolved cellulose/acrylic acid copolymer‐based blends function well as coating materials. All of the tested blends showed a good resistance against grease in the coating trials, having grease resistance from 60 to 69 days despite a very thin (~2 µm) coating layer. In addition, cellulose/PE‐co‐AA coating showed improved water vapor and oxygen barrier properties when compared with neat dissolved cellulose‐coated paperboard. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. This article concerns the functionalization of polypropylene (PP) with oxazoline functionality by melt free radical grafting along with a low degree of degradation of PP in a batch mixer. A low volatile oxazoline, ricinoloxazoline maleinate (OXA), was used as the monomer. The grafting yield of OXA ranged from about 0.5 phr up to 1.5 phr (grams per 100 grams of PP) when its initial concentration and that of the peroxide ranged from 1.5 to 6.0 phr and 0.1 to 0.7 phr, respectively. The corresponding conversion of OXA to grafted OXA ranged from about 15 to 50%. Addition of styrene (St) as the comonomer did not enhance the grafting yield of OXA but markedly reduced the PP degradation. Also, little homo-and/or copolymers of OXA and/or St were found in the grafting system. This agrees with our finding that OXA and St did not copolymerize easily. The potential of using an OXA modified PP (PP-g-OXA) as the compatibilizer precursor in PP/PBT blends was examined as well. The presence of PP-g-OXA reduced the particle size of the dispersed phase (PBT) along with improved cohesion between the PP and PBT phases. This is consistent with a model kinetic study, which showed that the reaction between oxazoline and carboxylic functionalities was very fast. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Dated sediment cores and surface sediments were analyzed from the Gulf of Finland, a part of the Baltic Sea, to study the sources, levels, distribution, and total amounts of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The gulf was found to be severely polluted, with PCDD/F sum concentrations as high as 101000 ng/kg and 479 ng/kg WHO-TEQ in dry weight. The source of pollution was the former manufacturing and use of a chlorophenol based wood preservative along the Kymijoki River. It was estimated thatthe impacted sedimentary area stretched a distance of 75 km away out from the coast and that the PCDD/F sum load attributed to the wood preservative source was 1770 kg of PCDD/Fs or 12.4 (+/-2.8) kg WHO-TEQ. The surface sediments contained 24-66% of the maximum concentrations present in the 1960-1970s, showing that the river still acts as a significant PCDD/F source and may contribute to the high levels in fish. Moreover, the reduced PCDD/F and PCB concentrations were partly due to the dilution by increased dry matter deposition. PCBs were uniformly distributed over the gulf, and the PCB load in the polluted area was 2020 kg or 0.14 kg WHO-TEG.  相似文献

Response surface methodology was employed to study the influence of four recipe variables (wheat: rye flour ratio, bread acidity, ash content of rye flour and sodium chloride content) on the identity and overall acceptance of two rye bread types (soft and crisp rye bread). The subjects ( n = 79) rated attribute intensities, the extent to which the salient sensory properties and the overall sample corresponded to their expectations of rye bread, and the overall acceptance (pleasantness and purchase intentions). The acidity and ash content contributed the most to the extent to which a sample met subjects' expectations. The NaCl content was not critical. Consumer acceptance was affected by ash content, and by the interactions, NaCl content × acidity and wheat:rye ratio × ash content. The non-significance of NaCl content should encourage the baking industry to put low-salt rye products on the market.  相似文献

Plants have been suggested to have an immunological memory comparable to animals. The evidence for this, however, is scarce. In our study with the mountain birch—Epirrita autumnata system, we demonstrated that birches exposed as long as 5 yr to feeding of E. autumnata larvae (delayed induced resistance, DIR), responded more strongly to a new challenge than trees without an herbivory history. Pupal weights remained lower, and the duration of the larval period was prolonged in the DIR trees, although immunity, measured as an encapsulation rate, was not affected. We further demonstrated that the effects of birch phenolics on performance of E. autumnata were different in the exposed (DIR) trees from naive control trees, although we found only one significant change in chemistry. The quercetin:kaemferol ratio was increased in DIR trees, suggesting that herbivory caused oxidative stress in birches. In DIR trees, phenolics, especially hydrolyzable tannins (HTs), affected pupal weights negatively, whereas in control trees, the effects were either nonsignificant or positive. HTs also prolonged the duration of the larval period of females, whereas peroxidase (POD) activity prolonged that of males. We suggest that the causal explanation for the induced resistance was an enhanced oxidation of phenolic compounds from the DIR trees in the larval digestive tract. Phenolic oxidation produces semiquinones, quinones, free radicals, and ROS, which may have toxic, antinutritive, and/or repellent properties against herbivores.  相似文献

Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers, LCPs, are frequently blended with thermoplastics to achieve an in situ composite structure. Significant mechanical reinforcement is obtained for the matrix polymer in the direction of the LCP fibers, but the transversal properties are often inferior because of the incompatibility of the components. Blends of LCP with polypropylene, and with three related matrix polymers, and PP/LCP blends with added potential compatibilizers were prepared and studied for their mechanical properties and morphology. A notable improvement in impact strength was achieved when a small amount of ethylene-based terpolymer was added as compatibilizer. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We have studied how different catalysts and diols affect the properties of low-molecular-weight (Mw (GPC) < 49800 g/mol) lactic-acid-based telechelic prepolymers. The catalysts and diols were tested separately in our previous studies. In this study, we used the best previously tested diols and catalysts together in order to prepare different types of telechelic prepolymers (for example, crystalline or amorphous). All condensation polymerizations were carried out in the melt, using different diols and different catalysts. The prepolymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, titrimetric methods, and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR). According to NMR, the resulting polymers contained less than 1 mol % of lactic acid monomer and less than 5.1 mol % of lactide. Dibutyltindilaurate, like tin(II)octoate, produced quite good molecular weights, but the resulting prepolymers contained exceptionally high amounts of D-lactic acid structures, and, therefore, these prepolymers were totally amorphous. Antimony(III)oxide produced a high-molecular-weight prepolymer when the diol used was aliphatic. Like DBTL, Sb2O3 produced amorphous prepolymers, which contained a lower amount of D-lactic acid structures than DBTL prepolymers. 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone produced a different kind of chain structure with Ti(IV)bu and Ti(IV)iso because one prepolymer had high crystallinity, and the other showed only a slight crystallinity. Sulphuric acid produced a very high-molecular-weight prepolymer with aliphatic 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol; and with aromatic diols, it produced quite good molecular weights, except with 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone. High-molecular-weight prepolymers produced with H2SO4 also showed high crystallinity; and, according to 13C-NMR, they did not contain lactide and D-lactic acid structures. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Department of Intelligent Hydraulics and Automation (IHA) of Tampere University of Technology has been involved in the European Fusion program since 1994 within the ITER reactor maintenance activities. In this paper we discuss the design and development of a six degrees of freedom water hydraulic manipulator with a force feedback for teleoperation tasks. The manipulator is planned to be delivered to Divertor Test Platform 2 (DTP2) during year 2008. The paper also discusses the possibility to improve the fail safe and redundant operation of the manipulator. During the design of the water hydraulic manipulator, special provisions have been made in order to meet the safety requirements such as servo valve block for redundant operation and safety vane brakes for fail safe operation.  相似文献
