Hot carrier solar cells are a third generation solar cell device where electrons and holes, heated by solar radiation, are removed from the absorber via low-dimensional energy selective contacts before they can thermalise to the band edge. Here, a new model is presented for calculating the performance of these devices, which takes into account the energy spectrum of the contacts. It is shown that efficiency is maximised with a certain ideal number of contacts and that the energy spectra of these should be narrow. 相似文献

A novel method is introduced for the generation of landmarks for three-dimensional (3-D) shapes and the construction of the corresponding 3-D statistical shape models. Automatic landmarking of a set of manual segmentations from a class of shapes is achieved by 1) construction of an atlas of the class, 2) automatic extraction of the landmarks from the atlas, and 3) subsequent propagation of these landmarks to each example shape via a volumetric nonrigid registration technique using multiresolution B-spline deformations. This approach presents some advantages over previously published methods: it can treat multiple-part structures and requires less restrictive assumptions on the structure's topology. In this paper, we address the problem of building a 3-D statistical shape model of the left and right ventricle of the heart from 3-D magnetic resonance images. The average accuracy in landmark propagation is shown to be below 2.2 mm. This application demonstrates the robustness and accuracy of the method in the presence of large shape variability and multiple objects. 相似文献

Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) are widely used in research and are established in the industry. The building block nature of organic compounds enables a vast variety of materials. On top of that, there exist many strategies to improve the light outcoupling of OLEDs making a direct comparison of outcoupling technologies difficult. Here, a novel approach is introduced for the evaluation of light outcoupling structures. The new defined “efficiency of light outcoupling structures” (ELOS) clearly determines the effectiveness of the light outcoupling structure by weighting the experimental efficiency enhancement over the theoretical outcoupling gain. It neither depends on cavity design nor on the chosen organic material. The methodology is illustrated for red phosphorescent OLEDs comprising internal and external light outcoupling structures. Assumptions and further uses are discussed with respect to experimental and theoretical handling. In addition, the ELOS is calculated for various outcoupling techniques from literature to demonstrate the universality. Finally, most suitable reference OLEDs are discussed for application of light outcoupling structures. The presented approach enables new possibilities for studying light outcoupling structures and improves their comparability in a highly material‐driven research field. 相似文献

In this study, nanocrystals of antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 are shown via Raman spectroscopy to display peculiar lattice dynamics in terms of phonon softening and the occurrence of an exceptionally strong spin-phonon coupling. This effect, which is observed to persist well above the onset of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, is ascribed to locally correlated spin fluctuations due to the modulation of the magnetic exchange interactions as the chromium atoms oscillate about their equilibrium position. It is found that the spin-phonon coupling strength is governed by the competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions, where changes in the surface spin configuration can also play a crucial role. Overall, this work proves the size dependence of the interplay between the crystalline and magnetic structures in 3D antiferromagnets varying the surface-to-volume ratio and helps establish the fundamentals for a spin-phonon coupling engineering at the nanoscale via a simple route in a very stable and easy to synthesize material. More importantly, it demonstrates the possibility of coupling phononic excitations with the magnetization dynamics at room temperature, offering a highly prospective nanomaterial for the design of novel magnonic devices. 相似文献

A novel three‐electrode electrolyte supercapacitor (electric double‐layer capacitor [EDLC]) architecture in which a symmetrical interdigital “working” two‐electrode micro‐supercapacitor array (W‐Cap) is paired with a third “gate” electrode that reversibly depletes/injects electrolyte ions into the system controlling the “working” capacity effectively is described. All three electrodes are based on precursor‐derived nanoporous carbons with well‐defined specific surface area (735 m2 g?1). The interdigitated architecture of the W‐Cap is precisely manufactured using 3D printing. The W‐Cap operating with a proton conducting PVA/H2SO4‐hydrogel electrolyte and high capacitance (6.9 mF cm?2) can be repeatedly switched “on” and “off”. By applying a low DC bias potential (?0.5 V) at the gate electrode, the AC electroadsorption in the coupled interdigital nanoporous carbon electrodes of the W‐Cap is effectively suppressed leading to a stark capacity drop by two orders of magnitude from an “on” to an “off” state. The switchable micro‐supercapacitor is the first of its kind. This general concept is suitable for implementing a broad range of nanoporous materials and advanced electrolytes expanding its functions and applications in future. The integration of intelligent functions into EDLC devices has extensive implications for diverse areas such as capacitive energy management, microelectronics, iontronics, and neuromodulation. 相似文献

The reactions of a sintered α-SiC with 5% H2 /H2 O/Ar at 1300°C were studied. Thermomchemical modeling indicates that three reaction regions are expected, depending on the initial water vapor or equivalently oxygen content of the gas stream. A high oxygen content ( P (O2 ) > 10−22 atm) leads to a SiO2 formation. This generally forms as a protective film and limits consumption of the SiC (passive oxidation). An intermediate oxygen content (10−22 atm > P (O2 ) > 10−26 atm) leads to SiO and CO formation. These gaseous products can lead to rapid consumption of the SiC (active oxidation). Thermogravimetric studies in this intermediate region gave reaction rates which appear to be controlled by H2 O gas-phase transport to the sample and reacted microstructures showed extensive grain-boundary attack in this region. Finally, a very low oxygen content ( P (O2 ) < 10−26 atm) is thermochemically predicted to lead to selective removal of carbon and formation of free silicon. Experimentally low weight losses and iron silicides are observed in this region. The iron silicides are attributed to reaction of free silicon and iron impurities in the system. 相似文献

Aberrant left pulmonary artery, or pulmonary sling, is a rare variation of the pulmonary vasculature, with only one previous report of the condition being recognized in an adult. In this report a second case recognized de novo in an adult is presented. Both of these adults were evaluated because of right paratracheal masses which required differentiation from pulmonary malignancies. The barium swallow shows a characteristic indentation of the anterior esophageal wall and the lateral tomogram demonstrates absence of the left pulmonary artery from its normal position in the left hilum. The pulmonary arteriogram is diagnostic and allows avoidance of more invasive diagnostic measures. 相似文献

In contrast to polymer membranes, ceramic membranes offer considerable advantages for safe drinking water provision due to their excellent chemical, thermal, and mechanical endurance. In this study, porous ceramic microtubes made of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) are presented, which are conditioned for bacteria filtration by immobilizing lysozyme as an antibacterial enzyme. In accordance with determined membrane pore sizes of the nonfunctionalized microtube of ≤200 nm, log reduction values (LRV) of nearly 3 (i.e., bacterial retention of 99.9%) were obtained for bacterial retention studies using gram-positive model bacterium Micrococcus luteus. Immobilization studies of lysozyme on the membrane surface reveal an up to six times higher lysozyme loading for the covalent immobilization route as compared to unspecific immobilization. Antibacterial activity of lysozyme-functionalized microtubes was assessed by qualitative agar plate test using Micrococcus luteus as substrate showing that both the unspecific and the covalent lysozyme immobilization enhance the microtubes' antibacterial properties. Quantification of the enzyme activity at flow conditions by photometric assays reveals that the enzyme activities of lysozyme-functionalized microtubes depend strongly on applied flow rates. Intracapillary feeding of bacteria solution and higher flow rates lead to reduced enzyme activities. In consideration of different applied flow rates in the range of 0.2-0.5 mL/min, the total lysozyme activity increases by a factor of 2 for the covalent immobilization route as compared to the unspecific binding. Lysozyme leaching experiments at flow conditions for 1 h show a significant higher amount of washed-out lysozyme (factor 1.7-3.4) for the unspecific immobilization route when compared to the covalent route where the initial level of antibacterial effectiveness could be achieved by reimmobilization with lysozyme. The presented platform is highly promising for sustainable bacteria filtration. 相似文献
