Mechanisms of transfer of inorganic phosphate, Pi, across the placenta of rats at 21 days of gestation were studied using 32Pi. In one group of experiments the unidirectional transfer of Pi from mother to fetus was estimated from radioactivity in the fetus at various intervals after the tracer injection into the mother. At 15 min after tracer injection, the transfer rate was only slightly higher than the estimated rate of fetal accretion of Pi, and it decreased rapidly with the length of the experiment suggesting deterioration of the transfer mechanism under conditions of an acute experiment. In other experiments, transfer of 32Pi and 51Cr-EDTA (a marker of paracellular transfer) were measured across the dually-perfused placenta in the maternal-fetal direction. The transfer rate of 32Pi was an order of magnitude higher than the transfer of 51Cr-EDTA indicating that most of the Pi transfer is transcellular. The transfer of 32P decreased when the concentration of Na+ in the maternal perfusate was reduced, it was related inversely to the concentration of Pi on the fetal side of the placenta, and it was related directly to the concentration of Ca2+ on the fetal side. The maternal-fetal transfer of Pi exhibited saturation kinetics with a K(m) of about 0.4 mM suggesting that at a physiological concentration of Pi in maternal plasma the transfer mechanism is nearly saturated. The present observations are consistent with Pi being transferred in contransport with Na+. The maternal-fetal transport of Pi appears to be stabilized by the high affinity of the transport system to Pi, and controlled by a negative feedback between fetal concentration of Pi and the Pi transfer rate. It may also be controlled, to some degree, by the fetal plasma Ca2+.  相似文献

Cough is commonly used as an outcome measure in clinical studies, although the subjective reporting of cough is unreliable when compared to objective measures. We describe an inexpensive new ambulatory cough meter that is based on a disused Holter monitor. The cough meter consists of a Holter monitor and a cough processor, designed on a computer to select the most appropriate filters. The cough meter was then validated against the overnight tape recorder on 21 occasions in 18 children (aged 6-15 yrs). The agreement between the cough meter and the tape recorder was good (mean difference of -0.3 coughs x h(-1); limits of agreement -2.2 to 1.7 coughs x h(-1)). We conclude that our newly described ambulatory cough meter provides a valid and inexpensive method of objectively monitoring cough for up to 24 h.  相似文献

Media reports suggest that the public is becoming impatient with the homeless--that so-called "compassion fatigue" has gripped the nation. This characterization of public sentiment could have important policy consequences-- restrictive measures can be justified by growing public impatience, and progressive housing policies seem feasible within a hostile climate of opinion. But evidence to support the compassion fatigue notion is anecdotal. We examine the issue by tracking the results of public opinion polls and by reporting detailed evidence from a nationwide random-digit dial telephone survey (N = 1,507) concerning knowledge attitudes and beliefs about homeless people. To be sure, the public sees homelessness as an undesirable social problem and wants something done about it. However, although the homeless are clearly stigmatized, there is little evidence to suggest that the public has lost compassion and is unwilling to support policies to help homeless people.  相似文献

Increased hot-plate ignition probability for nanoparticle-laden diesel fuel   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The present study attempts to improve the ignition properties of diesel fuel by investigating the influence of adding aluminum and aluminum oxide nanoparticles to diesel. As part of this study, droplet ignition experiments were carried out atop a heated hot plate. Different types of fuel mixtures were used; both particle size (15 and 50 nm) as well as the volume fraction (0%, 0.1%, and 0.5%) of nanoparticles added to diesel were varied. For each type of fuel mixture, several droplets were dropped on the hot plate from a fixed height and under identical conditions, and the probability of ignition of that fuel was recorded based on the number of droplets that ignited. These experiments were repeated at several temperatures over the range of 688-768 degrees C. It was observed that the ignition probability for the fuel mixtures that contained nanoparticles was significantly higher than that of pure diesel.  相似文献

Seven volatile compounds identified from the headspace of whole wheat bread dough were investigated for their role in attractingGlischrochilus quadrisignatus andG. fasciatus in the field. Traps baited with either whole wheat bread dough or a synthetic seven-component bread dough odor caught similar numbers of these beetles, suggesting that the seven-compound combination could simulate the behavioral effect of bread dough. A series of trials using traps baited with various combinations of these chemicals showed that five compounds were significantly active in attractingG. quadrisignatus andG. fasciatus, but not all were essential for maximum response. The simplest blend eliciting a level of response comparable to the seven-component combination included ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and racemic 2-methylbutanol, of which ethyl acetate, ethanol, and acetaldehyde were essential and 2-methylbutanol was replaceable with 2-methylpropanol forG. quadrisignatus attraction. Ethyl acetate and ethanol were essential for comparable attraction ofG. fasciatus. The chemical mediation of food finding in G.quadrisignatus andG. fasciatus is discussed in the context of volatile blends characterized for other nitidulid species.  相似文献

Using asymptotic theory and a momentum method, we have identified a family of dispersion management schemes that are advantageous for massive multichannel soliton transmission. For the practical case of two-step dispersion maps, special schemes are found that have optimal launch point locations (where no pulse prechirping is needed) that are independent of the fiber's dispersion. Despite the variation of dispersion with respect to carrier wavelength due to the fiber's dispersion slope, the transmission in several different channels can be optimized simultaneously using the same optimal launch point. An experimental study has been conducted into the role of cooling rate on the kinetics of the peritectic phase transformation in a Fe−C alloy. The interfacial growth velocities of the peritectic phase transformation were measured in situ for cooling rates of 100, 50, and 10 K/min. In-situ observations were obtained using high-temperature laser scanning confocal microscopy (HTLSCM) in a concentric solidification configuration. The experimentally measured interface velocities of the liquid/austenite (L/γ) and austenite/delta-ferrite (γ/δ) interphase boundaries were observed to increase with higher cooling rates. A unique finding of this study was that as the cooling rate increased there was a transition point where the L/γ interface propagated at a higher velocity than the γ/δ interface, contrary to the findings of previous researchers. Phase field modeling was conducted using a commercial multicomponent, multiphase package. Good correlation was obtained between model predictions and experimental observations in absolute values of interface velocities and the effect of cooling rate. Analysis of the simulated microsegregation in front of the L/γ and γ/δ interfaces as a function of cooling rate revealed the importance of solute pileup. This microsegregation plays a pivotal role in the propagation of interfaces; thus, earlier modeling work in which complete diffusion in the liquid phase was assumed cannot fully describe the rate of propagation of the L/γ and δ/γ interfaces during the course of the peritectic transformation.  相似文献
