The refractive index of ZnO/organic nanocomposite films was modified in the range from 1.44 to 1.55, while maintaining high visible transparency. The transparency of the nanocomposite films showed an abnormal behaviour as a function of the loading level of inorganic particles, because it did not decrease according to the Beer‐Lambert law, but rather saturated to a near‐constant value at high particle loading levels above ≈8 vol.‐%. On the other hand, the refractive index of the film showed good agreement with the Bruggemann model, linearly increased as particle concentration increased. This result indicates the possibility of fabricating highly transparent nanocomposite films with controlled refractive indices.

Graft copolymerization of styrene onto cellulose was studied in a homogeneous system (SO2–DEA–DMSO medium) by γ-ray mutual irradiation technique. At the same time, homopolymerization of styrene was also examined separately in DMSO, SO2–DMSO, DEA–DMSO, and SO2–DEA–DMSO media by the same technique. Polymerization of styrene hardly occurs on concentrations above 10 mole SO2–DEA complex per mole glucose unit. Maximum percent grafting was obtained in concentrations of 4 mole, after which it decreased rapidly. Total conversion and percent grafting increased with the irradiation time. The value (=0.55) of the slope of the total conversion rate plotted against the dose was only a little higher than the 1/2 which was expected from normal kinetics. No retardation in homopolymerization of styrene in DMSO, SO2–DMSO, and DEA–DMSO was evident, while the retardation of homopolymerization in the SO2–DEA–DMSO medium was measurable. Sulfur atoms were detected in the polymers obtained in both of SO2–DMSO and SO2–DEA–DMSO solutions. In order to measure exactly the trans-fatty acids content in food materials, a preparative group separation of cis- and trans-isomers of unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) was achieved by an isocratic reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC) method.
The trans-isomers of 16:1, 18:1, 18:2, 18:3, 20:1 and 22:1 FAMEs were readily separated from the corresponding cis-isomers by a COSMOSIL Cholester C18 column (4.6 mm I.D. × 250 mm, Nacalai Tesque) or a TSKgel ODS-100Z column (4.6 mm I.D. × 250 mm,
TOSOH), using acetonitrile as the mobile phase. This method was applied for determining the trans-18:1 fatty acid content in partially hydrogenated rapeseed oil. The methyl esters of cis- and trans-18:1 isomers of the oil were collected as two separate fractions by the developed RP-HPLC method. Each fraction was analyzed
by gas chromatography (GC) for both qualitative and quantitative information on its positional isomers. By a combination of
RP-HPLC and GC methods, a nearly complete separation of cis- and trans-18:1 positional isomers was achieved and the trans-18:1 fatty acid content was able to be evaluated more precisely than is possible by the direct GC method. The reproducibility
of cis- and trans-18:1 isomers fractionated by the RP-HPLC method was better than 98%. These results suggested that the preparative RP-HPLC

Using an n-i-n heterostructure, a travelling-wave Mach-Zehnder modulator on an InP substrate has been developed. An extremely small /spl pi/ voltage (V/sub /spl pi//) of 2.2 V has been obtained, even for a short signal-electrode length of 3 mm.
