The development of the temporomandibular joint: a review with regard to the lateral pterygoid muscle

This review sets out to explore the relationship between the lateral pterygoid muscle and the meniscus. It examines the embryological evidence to explain the controversy surrounding the apparent morphological discrepancy in the attachment of the lateral pterygoid muscle to the meniscus. It shows that the contribution of the lateral pterygoid muscle to the formation of the meniscus remains in dispute. Morphogenetic studies have not been able to support either one or other viewpoint and no direct conclusions can therefore be made on the embryology of the temporomandibular joint. 相似文献

The selective 5HT3 antagonist tropisetron was studied in 91 outpatients meeting DSM-III criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Following a placebo washout period of up to 1 week, one of three active treatments (tropisetron 0.5 mg, 5 mg, or 25 mg daily) or placebo was given for a further 3 weeks. After 7 days treatment termination rates due to inefficacy showed a statistically significant dose-related therapeutic effect of tropisetron. Similar effects were seen on the Hopkins Symptom Check List total score and the Global Impression Scale. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale showed a similar trend which, however, failed to reach statistical significance. At day 21 tropisetron showed significant dose-dependent effects on all anxiety-related outcome measures. The incidence of adverse events was low and the severity generally mild. Most frequent complaints were headache, nausea, constipation and nervousness. Laboratory tests and physical examination performed at baseline and study end showed no significant treatment effects. 相似文献

The effects of cold storage and type of preservation solution on coronary endothelial function are not well established. Experiments were designed to evaluate coronary endothelial-dependent relaxation after a 4-hour cold (4 degrees C) storage in different preservation solutions. Rat hearts, mounted in the Langendorff apparatus, were arrested with a 10-minute perfusion of 4 degrees C crystalloid hyperkaliemic cardioplegic solution (CHCS) (KCl 24 mEq/l) and stored for 4 hours in the following preservation solutions: CHCS (n = 6), Krebs-Ringer solution (KR) (n = 6), 0.9% NaCl (NS) (n = 6) and the University of Wisconsin solution (UW) (n = 6). A fifth group (n = 6) was perfused and stored in UW solution. Endothelium-dependent and independent coronary artery vasorelaxations were respectively tested by infusing 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) (10(-6) mol/l) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (10(-5) mol/l) before and after the storage period. In hearts stored with CHCS or KR, coronary artery flow increase to 5-HT and SNP infusions were not significantly affected. However, in hearts preserved with NS or UW solutions, 5-HT coronary response was significantly decreased, indicating endothelial dysfunction. In addition to these findings, coronary flow increase to SNP infusion was decreased in the group perfused and stored with UW, suggesting smooth muscle dysfunction. These experiments suggest that 4-hour cold storage in NS or UW impairs endothelial-dependent coronary relaxation in the isolated rat heart model. 相似文献

PURPOSE: The role of exoproteins in the pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa keratitis was investigated in three animal models by assessing the relationship between corneal virulence and the activities of exotoxin A, elastase, alkaline protease, and an uncharacterized protease, protease IV. METHODS: The four Pseudomonal strains tested included a prototype strain (ATCC 27853) producing exotoxin A, elastase, and alkaline protease; a parent strain (PA103) producing only exotoxin A and protease IV; a mutant (PA103-29) producing only protease IV; and a mutant (PA103-AP1) producing exotoxin A and having only approximately 5% of the protease IV activity of its parent. Corneal virulence was evaluated in the mouse scratch, rabbit scratch, and rabbit intrastromal models in terms of clinical signs (slit lamp examination, slit lamp examination), and viable bacteria. RESULTS: Protease IV, the only protease produced by PA103 and PA103-29, was found to produce a unique band on zymograms (120 kDa) and to react distinctively with a synthetic substrate. Evidence for the role of protease IV in corneal virulence included two findings: PA103-29,which produced protease IV but not the other exoproteins, caused infections that were as severe as those caused by the prototype strain (ATCC 27853) in all three models (P>0.24); and PA103-AP1, the strain deficient in 95% of the parent protease IV activity, mediated infections characterized by slit lamp examination scores significantly lower than those of infections caused by the parent (PA103) or the prototype strain (ATCC 27853) in the rabbit and mouse scratch models (P<0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Protease IV was found to be a novel Pseudomonas protease contributing to corneal virulence in rabbits and mice when infections were initiated at the corneal surface. Furthermore, production of protease IV in low quantities was sufficient for virulence when the topical stages of keratitis were bypassed by an intrastromal injection of Pseudomonas. 相似文献

Iron regulatory proteins (IRPs) control the synthesis of several proteins in iron metabolism by binding to iron-responsive elements (IREs), a hairpin structure in the untranslated region (UTR) of corresponding mRNAs. Binding of IRPs to IREs in the 5' UTR inhibits translation of ferritin heavy and light chain, erythroid aminolevulinic acid synthase, mitochondrial aconitase, and Drosophila succinate dehydrogenase b, whereas IRP binding to IREs in the 3' UTR of transferrin receptor mRNA prolongs mRNA half-life. To identify new targets of IRPs, we devised a method to enrich IRE-containing mRNAs by using recombinant IRP-1 as an affinity matrix. A cDNA library established from enriched mRNA was screened by an RNA-protein band shift assay. This revealed a novel IRE-like sequence in the 3' UTR of a liver-specific mouse mRNA. The newly identified cDNA codes for a protein with high homology to plant glycolate oxidase (GOX). Recombinant protein expressed in bacteria displayed enzymatic GOX activity. Therefore, this cDNA represents the first vertebrate GOX homologue. The IRE-like sequence in mouse GOX exhibited strong binding to IRPs at room temperature. However, it differs from functional IREs by a mismatch in the middle of its upper stem and did not confer iron-dependent regulation in cells. 相似文献
