User mobility pattern scheme for location update and paging in wireless systems

The user mobility pattern (UMP) scheme is introduced for location update and paging in wireless systems where mobile terminals (MTs) maintain their history data in a database called user mobility history (UMH). During a location update, a UMP is derived from UMH and registered to the network. Unless the MT detects that it has moved out of the registered UMP, it does not perform any other location update. On the other hand, cells are paged selectively according to the cell entry times in the registered UMP upon a call arrival for the MT. The related data structures and the protocols for the UMP scheme are presented in the paper. The experimental results show that the UMP scheme outperforms the time-based and movement-based location update schemes as well as the blanket, selective, and velocity paging schemes.     

The entropy of terrestrial solar radiation

Complete thermodynamic evaluation of energy conversion devices calls for energy and entropy balance equations. While the subject of radiation energy has been well taken care of, the same is not true for the entropy of radiation. This has become obvious from the discussion about the maximum work that can be drawn from solar radiation. This article collects and reflects the basic equations needed to calculate the radiation entropy, and it discusses the influence of the three major input functions on the entropy, namely the spectral and hemispherical distribution of radiation intensity, and its degree of polarization. Results of realistic calculations using atmospheric models are given in the last section in form of an energy-entropy diagram.     

Verbal and spatial working memory in school-age children: Developmental differences in susceptibility to interference.

The development of verbal and spatial working memory was investigated with an interference paradigm. Memory spans were obtained from 3 groups (8-, 10-, and 19-yr olds) under 6 different conditions: Two primary memory tasks (1 verbal, 1 spatial) were administered in isolation and in conjunction with 2 versions of a secondary task. The primary tasks required recalling a series of visually presented digits and recalling the locations of Xs in a series of visually presented grids. The secondary tasks required reporting the color of the stimuli as they were presented using either a verbal or a spatial response. Analyses revealed that all age groups showed domain-specific interference (i.e., interference by a secondary task from the same domain as the primary task), but only the 8-yr-olds also showed nonspecific interference (i.e., interference by a secondary task from a domain different than the primary memory task), suggesting that at least some executive functions do not reach adult levels of efficiency until approximately age 10. Noise margin enhancement in GaAs ROM's using current mode logic

Two different techniques that allow the implementation of embedded ROMs using a conventional GaAs MESFET technology are presented. The first approach is based on a novel circuit structure named low leakage current FET circuit (L2FC), which reduces significantly subthreshold currents. The second approach is based on pseudo current mode logic (PCML) which is by far the best choice in terms of noise margin levels. This characteristic is found to be the key factor when implementing GaAs ROM's because of its degradation as the number of word lines is increased. A 5-Kb ROM and a 2-Kb ROM were designed giving delays in the order of 2 ns and less than 1 ns, respectively. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques and their significance toward improving the noise margin     

Ocular involvement in tuberculoid leprosy--a case report

Leprosy is rarely diagnosed in our part of the world. In our 26-year-old patient, borderline lepromatous leprosy was first diagnosed in 1992 and was treated with Rifoldin, Lemprene and Dapson according to the standard WHO scheme of treatment. Ophthalmic examination showed minor epithelial lesions of the cornea in both eyes, a reduced corneal reflex in the left eye and a scleral leproma nasally and close to the limbus, also in the left eye. In 1995, the patient was examined again and was treated as above for lepromata of the left eyebrow nasally and of both lower legs. Ophthalmic examination revealed conjunctival irritation, anterior uveitis with leprosy pearls on the pupillary margin and secondary glaucoma. The glaucoma was treated with hypotonics, the uveitis was treated with topical cortisone. The intra-ocular pressure normalised and the uveitis improved. Of the two main types of leprosy, lepromatous leprosy and tuberculoid leprosy, our patient had the second, milder form.     

Microbiologic depuration of Anadara tuberculosa (Mollusca: Arcidae)

In Costa Rica the mollusk Anadara tuberculosa represents a risk for human health due to the contamination of the growing waters and the fact that its is consumed raw. The families depending on the income obtained through commercialization of these animals have a low education and economic status. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop and evaluate simple methods of depuration that could be easily used by these families to make these mollusks safe for consumption. Bottles containing 11 of saline solution (25g/l) were prepared in duplicates to test the bactericidal effect of acetic acid. The solution in each bottle was adjusted to ph 4.5, 5.0 or 5.5 or held at ph of 7.0 or 8.0 for the controls. The solution in each bottle was then inoculated with approximately 1 X 104 cfu/ml of coliforms. Counts of coliforms were determined for each bottle 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 hours after inoculation. For the depuration studies, specimens with diameters ranging from 4.0 to 4.5 cm were collected from a harvester at the estuary of Puntarenas, Gulf of Nicoya. Fifty specimens each were depurated in separate tanks containing 25 1 of oxygenated saline solution adjusted with acetic acid to an initial ph of 4.5 (treatment) or non adjusted ph of 8.0 (control). Counts of Enterobacteriaceae were determined, in duplicates, every 12 hr for 48 hr. An additional fifty animals were depurated using the defined method and tested to determine if they met international standards of microbiological quality for aerobic plate count, Enterobacteriaceae count, Escherichia coli count and presence of Salmonella. A sensory evaluation using a triangle test was performed to compare a typical dish prepared with depurated or non-depurated animals. A significant coliform reduction was determined in a saline solution (25 g/l) at a pH range of 4.5 to 5.5. This reduction, during 8 hr, was higher in the acid treatments compared to the controls. During depuration, the elimination of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria was faster when acetic was used (initial ph = 4.5) than when it was not. This elimination was more important the first 24 hr, time defined as adequate for the application of the method. The method has the advantage of transforming the bivalve in a product that is safe for human consumption, since it guarantees that the international standards of microbiological quality, for raw and depurated mollusks, are reached. On the other hand, the sensory qualities of a typical dish prepared with depurated animals are not affected by the method, which can be easily implemented and applied by the people that work in the extraction of this mollusk.
