Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in patients with end‐stage kidney disease on hemodialysis

The objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in hemodialysis patients with spirometry and to examine the effects of fluid removal by hemodialysis on lung volumes. Patients ≥18 years at two Danish hemodialysis centers were included. Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV₁), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV₁/FVC ratio were measured with spirometry before and after hemodialysis. The diagnosis of COPD was based on both the GOLD criteria and the lower limit of normal criteria. There were 372 patients in treatment at the two centers, 255 patients (69%) completed spirometry before dialysis and 242 of these (65%) repeated the test after. In the initial test, 117 subjects (46%) had airflow limitation indicative of COPD with GOLD criteria and 103 subjects (40.4%) with lower limit of normal criteria; COPD was previously diagnosed in 24 patients (9%). Mean FVC and FEV₁ decreased mildly after dialysis (FVC: 2.84 to 2.79 L, P < 0.01. FEV₁: 1.97 to 1.93 L, P < 0.01) Hemodialysis did not affect the FEV₁/FVC ratio or number of subjects with airflow limitation indicative of COPD (113 vs. 120, P = 0.324; n = 242). COPD is a frequent and underdiagnosed comorbidity in patients on chronic hemodialysis. Spirometry should be considered in all patients on dialysis in order to address dyspnea adequately. Hemodialysis induced a small fall in mean FEV₁ and FVC, which was more pronounced in patients with little or no fluid removal, but the FEV₁/FVC ratio and the number of subjects with airflow limitation indicative of COPD were not affected by dialysis.     

Algorithm based decision support system for the concerted selection of equipment in machining/assembly cells

Equipment selection plays a major role in the performance of machining/assembly cells. Based on analytical algorithms, a decision support system (DSS) is developed to select machining centres and robots concurrently from the milieu available in the marketplace. The DSS evaluates the design and geometry of the mating parts that are to be processed and assembled by the cell. Accordingly, it recommends the machining centre and robot that maximize the cell's performance subject to various operational and budget constraints.     

Interplay between Endothelin and Erythropoietin in Astroglia: The Role in Protection against Hypoxia

We show that, under in vitro conditions, the vulnerability of astroglia to hypoxia is reflected by alterations in endothelin (ET)-1 release and capacity of erythropoietin (EPO) to regulate ET-1 levels. Exposure of cells to 24 h hypoxia did not induce changes in ET-1 release, while 48–72 h hypoxia resulted in increase of ET-1 release from astrocytes that could be abolished by EPO. The endothelin receptor type A (ETA) antagonist BQ123 increased extracellular levels of ET-1 in human fetal astroglial cell line (SV-FHAS). The survival and proliferation of rat primary astrocytes, neural precursors, and neurons upon hypoxic conditions were increased upon administration of BQ123. Hypoxic injury and aging affected the interaction between the EPO and ET systems. Under hypoxia EPO decreased ET-1 release from astrocytes, while ETA receptor blockade enhanced the expression of EPO mRNA and EPO receptor in culture-aged rat astroglia. The blockade of ETA receptor can increase the availability of ET-1 to the ETB receptor and can potentiate the neuroprotective effects of EPO. Thus, the new therapeutic use of combined administration of EPO and ETA receptor antagonists during hypoxia-associated neurodegenerative disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) can be suggested.     

Separation and characterization of food macromolecules using field-flow fractionation: A review

Recent years have seen an increasing interest in asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) as a method for the fractionation and characterization of macromolecules and colloidal particles. In this paper utilization of AF4 in food applications is reviewed. Instrumental considerations are discussed as well as which properties can be assessed by AF4 and adequate detection systems. Furthermore, published literature on analysis of food macromolecules with AF4 is critically reviewed.
