An empirical study was undertaken to evaluate second language learning with a videodisc named Vi-Conte. The 78 subjects were post-secondary students and adults and belonged either to a control group, a video-control group or an experimental group. The research methodology is presented as well as analyses of learners' navigational patterns, strategies, gains in vocabulary items, changes in attitude and global evaluation of the videodisc. Suggestions for the development of adaptive learning environments are made based on these findings. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Indoor radon concentrations are subject to seasonal variation with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. Procedures to correct for seasonal variation are necessary in order to get an unbiased estimate of the annual average radon concentration from data based on short-period radon measurements. To obtain correction factors, we apply the model developed by Pinel et al to the French database of indoor radon measurements (measurements performed as part of the indoor radon case-control study and of the national radon measurement campaign). For 6-month measurements, the correction factors vary from 0.87 to 1.17 and agree with those previously published. These results might be applicable when assessing indoor radon concentrations with regard to recommended action levels.  相似文献

Recent theoretical studies indicate that reactive organic iodocarbons such as CH2I2 would be extremely effective agents for tropospheric Arctic ozone depletion and that iodine compounds added to a Br2/BrCl mixture have a significantly greater ozone (and mercury) depletion effect than additional Br2 and BrCl molecules. Here we report the first observations of CH2I2, CH2IBr, and CH2ICl in Arctic air, as well as other reactive halocarbons including CHBr3, during spring at Kuujjuarapik, Hudson Bay. The organoiodine compounds were present atthe highest levels yet reported in air. The occurrence of the halocarbons was associated with northwesterly winds from the frozen bay, and, in the case of CHBr3, was anticorrelated with ozone and total gaseous mercury (TGM), suggesting a link between inorganic and organic halogens. The absence of local leads coupled with the extremely short atmospheric lifetime of CH2I2 indicates that production occurred in the surface of the sea-ice/overlying snowpack over the bay. We propose an abiotic mechanism for the production of polyhalogenated iodo- and bromocarbons, via reaction of HOI and/or HOBr with organic material on the quasi-liquid layer above sea-ice/snowpack, and report laboratory data to support this mechanism. CH2I2, CH2IBr, and other organic iodine compounds may therefore be a ubiquitous component of air above sea ice where they will increase the efficiency of bromine-initiated ozone and mercury depletion.  相似文献

High-volume air samples were collected from 1993 to 1996 in rural areas of Québec to investigate on the levels and the vapor-particle partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Ranges for the mean concentrations of total PAHs (ng m(-3)) were as follows: Villeroy, 3.31-18.92; St. Anicet, 7.57-22.84; and Mingan, 0.50-0.53. Lower molecular weight PAHs predominated at all locations. Particle-gas partition coefficients (Kp) were in good correlation with their vapor pressures (r2 = 0.79-0.97) with slopes deviating from the expected value of -1. The curve of the fractions of PAHs on particles in St Anicet in 1995 fell on that of Lake Superior. In St. Anicet, fractions of phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and chrysene on particles were close to those calculated from the soot-air partition coefficient (KSA). At all sites the mean ratios of particulate PAH of the same molecular weight but of very different reactivities were similar during the same sampling days, suggesting that particle-bearing PAHs in Villeroy and Mingan were of the same nature as those found in St. Anicet where adsorption onto soot particles was the major mechanism. Furthermore, the enthalpies of desorption for the predominant PAHs were close at all sites.  相似文献

Research indicates that students at-risk of dropping out of school have learning difficulties, behaviour problems, and come from low income families. It is likely that a high percentage of students at-risk of dropping out of school cannot be identified. The objective of this multidimensional study is to identify personal, familial and schooling variables associated with students at-risk of school dropout. A sample of 235 students at-risk and 567 students not at-risk of dropping out of school were assessed on several personal, family, and schooling variables. At-risk students differentiated themselves from controls and from dropout students on most of the variables. Logistic regression analysis indicated seven factors better classify at-risk students: depression affect, low family cohesion and organisation, low student involvement, negative teacher attitudes, low performance in mathematics and French. Two oil sand froth treatment methods are investigated: 1) dilution with an aromatic solvent followed by centrifugation (AS Method); 2) dilution with a paraffinic solvent followed by gravity settling (PS Method). The effectiveness of the methods is assessed in terms of bitumen recovery and the water content in the recovered diluted bitumen. The optimum solventto‐bitumen ratios are identified considering process type, ore quality, temperature, and residence time.  相似文献

A survey on pesticides (73 compounds) in the Bay St. Fran?ois wetland and its catchment (part of the wetlands of Lake St. Pierre area [St. Lawrence River, Québec]) was achieved in 2006. The metabolites as well as the active ingredients of pesticides (11 compounds) were detected in the wetland and its catchment. This wetland ecosystem was active in the degradation of agricultural pesticides (e.g., atrazine). The measured pesticides were individually below the criteria for aquatic species in natural water, except chlorpyrifos. Overall, the pesticides lost from agricultural field towards the streams were <1% of the quantity applied. The environmental fates of the pesticides were found to vary according to the size of the watershed. Over large catchments, half-life times were important in terms of global loss from the agricultural lands to wetlands whereas over small catchments, soil organic carbon/water distribution coefficient (Koc) was an important term for pesticides losses to water system since half-life times were not limiting factors.  相似文献

Recent epidemiological studies of the association between lung cancer and exposure to radon and its decay products are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to pooled case-control studies of residential exposures, and to cohorts of underground miners exposed to relatively low levels of radon. The residential and miner epidemiological studies provide consistent estimates of the risk of lung cancer, with significant associations observed at average annual concentrations of approximately 200 Bq/m3 and cumulative occupational levels of approximately 50 working level months (WLM), respectively. Based on recent results from combined analyses of epidemiological studies of miners, a lifetime excess absolute risk of 5 × 10?? per WLM [14 × 10?? per (mJh/m3)] should now be used as the nominal probability coefficient for radon- and radon-progeny-induced lung cancer, replacing the previous Publication 65 (ICRP, 1993) value of 2.8 × 10?? per WLM [8 × 10?? per (mJh/m3)]. Current knowledge of radon-associated risks for organs other than the lungs does not justify the selection of a detriment coefficient different from the fatality coefficient for radon-induced lung cancer. Publication 65 (ICRP, 2003) recommended that doses from radon and its progeny should be calculated using a dose conversion convention based on epidemiological data. It is now concluded that radon and its progeny should be treated in the same way as other radionuclides within the ICRP system of protection; that is, doses from radon and its progeny should be calculated using ICRP biokinetic and dosimetric models. ICRP will provide dose coefficients per unit exposure to radon and its progeny for different reference conditions of domestic and occupational exposure, with specified equilibrium factors and aerosol characteristics.  相似文献

Required hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) values were examined in terms of the nature of kerosene-water, both oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O), emulsions formed using Span 80/Tween 80 surfactant blends. Both the nature of the emulsification method and the oil/water ratio were critical in determining the resulting emulsion type. Both high- and low-shear conditions were investigated. Under high shear, low internal phase emulsions formed using the surfactant mixtures that corresponded to the required HLB values for emulsification involving kerosene (6 for W/O and 14 for O/W). However, at low shear, high internal phase (concentrated) emulsions resulted. Furthermore, depending on the oil/water ratio, some of the high internal phase emulsions were opposite to the type expected, given the HLB of the surfactant blend used. From these results, it appears that the emulsification technique (applied shear and oil/water ratio) used can be of greater importance in determining the final emulsion type than the HLB values of the surfactants themselves.  相似文献
