The sensitivity of the human Kv1.3 (hKv1.3) lymphocyte K+ channel to regulation by PKA and PKC is partially lost in HEK 293 host cells

Over a full year, the phytoplankton populations and physico-chemical conditions of treated sewage discharged into Lake Manzala in Egypt were investigated. Sixty-seven species of algae were identified, 18 Cyanophyta (Cyanobacteria), 19 Chlorophyta, 21 Bacillariophyta, 6 Euglenophyta, 2 Cryptophyta and one species Pyrrhophyta. Nitzschia (6 spp.), Scenedesmus (6 spp.), Navicula (4 spp.), Oscillatoria (4 spp.) and Euglena (4 spp.) were the most common genera. A remarkable seasonal variation in species composition and standing crop of the phytoplankton populations was noted during the study. The total phytoplankton standing crop appeared to be mainly dependent on the growth of certain species viz., Oscillatoria chalybea, O. princepes, O. tenuis, Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena constricta (Cyanophyta), Nitzschia obtusa, Bacillaria paradoxa, Cocconeis placentula, Cyclotella meneghiniana (Bacillariophyta), Pandorina morum, Volvox sp. (Chlorophyta) and Phacus curvicauda (Euglenophyta). The continuous presence of Anabaena constricta and Nitzschia palea was recorded in the treated sewage. The least represented algal divisions were Pyrrhophyta and Cryptophyta, both in terms of quality and quantity. The data indicate that the secondary effluents were unstable in their chemical features and grossly polluted. Therefore, the treatment systems must treat the discharged sewage to a tertiary level before discharging into Lake Manzala.     

Sexual harassment: Violence against women in the workplace.

Sexual harassment has been a fixture of the workplace since women first began to work outside the home. Although true epidemiological studies do not exist, large-scale surveys of working women suggest that approximately 1 of every 2 women will be harassed at some point during their academic or working lives. The data indicate that harassment is degrading, frightening, and sometimes physically violent; frequently extends over a considerable period of time; and can result in profound job-related, psychological, and health-related consequences. This article provides a brief review of the prevalence and consequences of sexual harassment and outlines social policy implications for research, legislation, and primary prevention. On the importance of operational definitions: A comment on Hayden.

Hayden's (1987) article concerning the merits of various "hypothesis-testing strategies" is critiqued on the grounds that he has not adequately defended the use of a "Level-4 concept" (Underwood, 1957). A parallel sorting algorithm for a novel model of computation

The computational complexity of a parallel algorithm depends critically on the model of computation. We describe a simple and elegant rule-based model of computation in which processors apply rules asynchronously to pairs of objects from a global object space. Application of a rule to a pair of objects results in the creation of a new object if the objects satisfy the guard of the rule. The model can be efficiently implemented as a novel MIMD array processor architecture, the Intersecting Broadcast Machine. For this model of computation, we describe an efficient parallel sorting algorithm based on mergesort. The computational complexity of the sorting algorithm isO(nlog² n), comparable to that for specialized sorting networks and an improvement on theO(n ^1.5) complexity of conventional mesh-connected array processors.     

Altered trafficking of mutant connexin32

We examined the cellular localization of nine different connexin32 (Cx32) mutants associated with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTX) in communication-incompetent mammalian cells. Cx32 mRNA was made, but little or no protein was detected in one class of mutants. In another class of mutants, Cx32 protein was detectable in the cytoplasm and at the cell surface, where it appeared as plaques and punctate staining. Cx32 immunoreactivity in a third class of mutants was restricted to the cytoplasm, where it often colocalized with the Golgi apparatus. Our studies suggest that CMTX mutations have a predominant effect on the trafficking of Cx32 protein, resulting in a potentially toxic cytoplasmic accumulation of Cx32 in these cells. These results and evidence of cytoplasmic accumulation of other mutated myelin proteins suggest that diseases affecting myelinating cells may share a common pathophysiology.     

We have seen the future, but is it us? The vocational aspirations of graduate students in counseling psychology.

In a recent article, Fitzgerald and Osipow documented a trend away from academic settings and vocational psychology and toward private practice and more clinically oriented tasks (such as long-term psychotherapy) among members of Division 17. In this study we extended the exploration of this issue by examining the vocational aspirations of a national sample of graduate students in counseling psychology, using similar methodology. The results document the increasing "professionalization" of counseling psychology, as well as the continued diminution of vocational psychology and career counseling as salient characteristics of the discipline, and are discussed in terms of the pragmatics of the marketplace and possible negative impact on clients. Relation of patient pretreatment characteristics to the therapeutic alliance in diverse psychotherapies.

The prediction of the therapeutic alliance from patient pretreatment characteristics was investigated with a sample of elderly depressed outpatients treated in behavioral, cognitive, and brief dynamic psychotherapy (N?=?60). For the sample as a whole, a higher degree of patient defensiveness was related to a lower patient contribution to the alliance as reflected in patient commitment and working capacity. Also, the availability of environmental support was positively associated with greater patient commitment across treatment conditions. The association of patient pretreatment characteristics with alliance was similar across behavioral and cognitive therapy and less similar across brief dynamic and behavioral or cognitive therapy. The nature of the therapeutic alliance in diverse treatment modalities is discussed, and implications for selection criteria and technical strategies for engaging the difficult patient are explored.
