The total effluent load of a paper mill can be significantly decreased by recycling of purified clear filtrate (CF) back to paper-making process. The CF treated with membranes can be reused, for instance, as wire section shower water and in the dilution of chemicals. The main requirements for a membrane in CF treatment are high filtration capacity, high retention of turbidity and low fouling tendency. Previous studies have shown that the regenerated cellulose (RC) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane C30F (current trade name UC030T) is especially suitable for the treatment of paper mill process waters. Every paper-making process is, however, different. Thus, filtration experiments are required in order to find the most optimal membrane for the treatment of a certain process water. In this study the best membrane for the treatment of acidic clear filtrate (ACF) was searched. The performance of the C30F membrane was compared with five UF and three microfiltration (MF) membranes. The results revealed that in addition to the C30F membrane, also some other membranes produced high filtration capacity with ACF (approximately 200 L/(m2h bar)). All the tested membranes also retained over 90% of turbidity. The extremely hydrophilic C30F membrane had, however, lower fouling tendency compared to the other tested membranes. Therefore, it was concluded that the C30F membranes were the best possible membrane for the ACF treatment.  相似文献

Background

Epidemiological studies suggest that inhalation of carbonaceous particulate matter from biomass combustion increases susceptibility to bacterial pneumonia. In vitro studies report that phagocytosis of carbon black by alveolar macrophages (AM) impairs killing of Streptococcus pneumoniae. We have previously reported high levels of black carbon in AM from biomass smoke-exposed children and adults. We therefore aimed to use a mouse model to test the hypothesis that high levels of carbon loading of AM in vivo increases susceptibility to pneumococcal pneumonia.

Methods

Female outbred mice were treated with either intranasal phosphate buffered saline (PBS) or ultrafine carbon black (UF-CB in PBS; 500 μg on day 1 and day 4), and then infected with S. pneumoniae strain D39 on day 5. Survival was assessed over 72 h. The effect of UF-CB on AM carbon loading, airway inflammation, and a urinary marker of pulmonary oxidative stress was assessed in uninfected animals.

Results

Instillation of UF-CB in mice resulted a pattern of AM carbon loading similar to that of biomass-smoke exposed humans. In uninfected animals, UF-CB treated animals had increased urinary 8-oxodG (P = 0.055), and an increased airway neutrophil differential count (P < 0.01). All PBS-treated mice died within 72 h after infection with S. pneumoniae, whereas morbidity and mortality after infection was reduced in UF-CB treated animals (median survival 48 h vs. 30 h, P < 0.001). At 24 hr post-infection, UF-CB treated mice had lower lung and the blood S. pneumoniae colony forming unit counts, and lower airway levels of keratinocyte-derived chemokine/growth-related oncogene (KC/GRO), and interferon gamma.

Conclusion

Acute high level loading of AM with ultrafine carbon black particles per se does not increase the susceptibility of mice to pneumococcal infection in vivo.  相似文献

A recently developed kinetic model for granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorbers (COMPSORB-GAC) that quantitatively describes the adsorption of trace organic contaminant in the presence of competing natural organic matter (NOM) was applied to evaluate the performance of different GAC system configurations: conventional fixed-bed adsorbers, layered upflow carbon adsorbers (LUCA), and moving-bed adsorbers (with few or many bed sections). COMPSORB-GAC separately tracks the adsorption of three components: a trace compound, a strongly competing NOM fraction that reduces trace compound equilibrium capacity, and a pore-blocking NOM fraction that reduces kinetics. Performance was simulated for various design criteria and with model parameters derived for two natural waters with significantly different NOM concentrations. For the range of simulated conditions and with baseline performance defined by a fixed-bed adsorber, LUCA generally reduced carbon usage rates (CURs) by 15-35%. A 2-section and a 16-section moving-bed reactor reduced baseline CURs by 20-30% and 45-55%, respectively. Projected CURs for the water source with a relatively high NOM concentration were 2-3 times higher for all reactor configurations and indicated that NOM preloading would cause performance deterioration in deep GAC beds, which highlights the importance of source water quality. These results show how COMPSORB-GAC can be used in a comprehensive, site-specific optimization of GAC systems to ensure robust system performance and to balance capital and operating costs.  相似文献

The relative distribution of types I and III collagens and collagen fibre architecture in the perimysium and endomysium were compared to the longissimus thoracis (LT) and pectoralis profundus (PP) muscles in pigs. The LT muscle was composed of type I myofibres 16.8%, IIA 12.9% and IIB 70.2%, and the PP muscle was 25.4, 23.1 and 51.5%, respectively. The total collagen amount differed significantly between the LT (2.66 mg/g) and PP (4.13 mg/g) muscle (P<0.001). On image analysis of the immunohistochemical preparations for types I and III collagens, the percentage area of the perimysium to the total collagen area showed significant differences between the muscles, where perimysial type I collagen occupied 25.4% of the total area in the LT muscle and 45.7% in the PP and perimysial type III 37.6 and 54.5%, respectively (P<0.001). In scanning electron microscopic photographs of the macerated preparation, very thick collagen layers composed of several fibre bands were observed in the perimysia of the PP muscle and appeared differently from the thinner perimysia with a few bands in the LT. Similar architecture of endomysial collagen fibres were observed around every myofibre type in the PP muscle and also in the LT. The fine surface cover of reticular collagen fibres around an adipocyte was shown as a global cast. These results suggested that the total collagen amount of the PP muscle was related mainly to the well developed perimysia composed of several collagen bands, indicating tougher meat compared with the LT muscle.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to develop new nanofiltration (NF) membranes capable of providing significantly greater water permeability and higher rejection of water contaminants compared to state-of-the-art NF membranes. The active layer of the new NF membranes is prepared with rigid star amphiphiles (RSAs) synthesized as part of this study. Performance characterization for a first generation of RSA membranes in a bench-scale apparatus reveals that most of the new membranes provide water permeability of 1.3-3.1 times that of two commercial NF membranes with polyamide active layers while providing comparable rejection of the organic contaminant surrogate Rhodamine WT. However, the rejection of arsenious acid (H3AsO3) by most new NF membranes was found to be lower than that by the two commercial NF membranes tested. Future research efforts of this study will focus on exploring if H3AsO3 rejection could be significantly increased, without negatively affecting water permeability and organic contaminant rejection, by addition of various chemical groups to RSA hydrophobic cores and hydrophilic branches, and by RSA cross-linking.  相似文献

On demand use of direct precipitation of wastewater has been successfully implemented at several large Scandinavian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) as a cost-efficient method of treating wastewater bypassing secondary treatment. During wet weather situations or when the capacity of secondary treatment is reduced excess wastewater can be treated through efficient direct precipitation. This increases the total capacity of the WWTP to remove phosphorus during these periods. This treatment strategy allows the WWTPs to meet stringent effluent phosphorus limits without extending secondary treatment of the main plant, despite high wet weather flows. The gain in terms of reduced phosphorus emissions varies depending on local conditions such as climate, collection system and secondary treatment capacity. It also varies from year to year depending on the weather and reductions of capacity due to planned refurbishing or unplanned breakdown of equipment. Operating chemical precipitation on demand has proved to contain challenges to operation and organisation of the WWTP. These challenges include logistics of start-up, training of staff and maintaining the system between occasions of operation. Sufficient up-stream storage capacity, reliable weather forecasts and good contracts with suppliers of chemicals are keys of success.  相似文献

Wind energy represents one of the most important renewable resources. Wind energy is a clean, renewable and its benefits are considered greater than the disadvantages. However, even though wind farms represent environmentally friendly projects, they frequently generate public resistance.One of the main disadvantages of wind farm construction projects is their poor aesthetic integration into the landscape. On the other hand, landscape impact of wind farms could be minimised if the visual impact is previously evaluated.As regards with the European legislation, the procedure of environmental impact assessment study is necessary before a wind farm project could be established. In contrast, there is not an objective methodology to assess the visual impact of wind farms.The aim of this work was to develop a methodology to predict and evaluate, before its construction, the visual impact of wind farms, taking into account the visualscape from different observation points.Proposed methodology could help to determine and evaluate the best location for new wind farm projects. Moreover, this method could be used as a consulting tool for public organization and private institutions, being quick, concise and clear.  相似文献

Mixed TiCN–WC–Co cermets are developed to improve at the same time toughness and resistance to deformation of materials for cutting tool applications. Moreover, graded materials joining optimum properties according to the functional part of the tool are elaborated. To this end, TiCN–WC–Co cermets are interesting because they develop a WC–Co layer at the surface during the sintering. This tough layer at the surface limits the crack propagation that can lead to the rupture of the tool. Such materials show a good resistance to the deformation in the bulk and a good toughness at the surface, where the cracks are initiated upon machining. Cutting tools are often coated by CVD to improve the wear resistance. This paper proposes a method to measure the toughness KIC at high temperature by using this CVD coating for initial crack formation. The coating thickness is the precrack length of traditional KIC measurements. Samples are fractured by three point bend tests. The rupture stress is measured by Weibull statistics. This method is particularly interesting for graded structure materials where the influence of surface layers on toughness must be estimated. The comparison between cermets with and without WC–Co layer shows an improvement of 28% of the toughness when the layer is present. The possible bias of internal stresses on the results is discussed.  相似文献

The “linearizing method” is a method used to predict the stress/strain relation of fabrics under biaxial extension in the warp and weft directions. The stress/strain relation is firstly linearized by using a transformed strain such as ei = ?i n where ei is the transformed strain (i =1, 2), ?i the strain, and n a constant, and the stress Fi is then expressed by a linear equation in ei. The elastic parameters are determined by strip–biaxial–extension experiments in the warp and weft directions. This method was proposed by Kawabata in 1985 without sufficient examination of its validity. In this paper, the validity of the method is inspected by biaxial–extension experiments for various kinds of fabric. It is concluded that the linearizing method has sufficient capacity to enable the biaxial–extension behaviour of the fabric to be estimated with considerable accuracy. For the case when the stress/strain relation is linearized in two zones of strain, the double–zone linearization is presented here to improve the accuracy of prediction and to expand the validity of this method over a wider range of strains.  相似文献

Objective: Our aim was to determine whether the impact of upward and downward social comparison information on individuals' motivation to manage their diabetes is dependent on their regulatory focus (promotion or prevention focus) and self-efficacy. Design: The hypotheses were examined in a cross-sectional study. Patients with diabetes (N = 234) read a fictitious interview with a fellow patient, either an upward or a downward target, and they filled out questionnaires. Main Outcome Measures: Motivation to work on diabetes regulation. Results: High promotion-focused patients reported more motivation than low promotion-focused patients when confronted with the upward target (positive role model). High prevention-focused patients reported more motivation than low prevention-focused patients when confronted with the downward target (negative role model). This latter finding was qualified by patients' self-efficacy, as it applied only to patients with relatively high levels of self-efficacy. Conclusion: The current study highlights the importance of considering individual differences when using role models to encourage self-care activities in persons with diabetes.
