The increasing number of indwelling medical materials and devices are connected with infections caused by yeast, especially Candida albicans. This pathogen produces biofilms on synthetic materials, which facilitates adhesion of the organisms to devices and renders them relatively refractory to medical therapy. Since antimicrobial polymer nanocomposites present one of the promising possibilities, this study explores a new approach to achieving this goal by developing nanocomposite based on low density polyethylene (LDPE) with clay mineral vermiculite as an active carrier for antifungal compound. The set of LDPE/clay nanocomposite with increasing amount of antifungal nanofiller was prepared by melt compounding procedure. As antifungal agent was selected generally used active substance ciclopiroxolamine and this compound was loaded into natural vermiculite through ultrasound technique. The structure of all prepared samples was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy. Further thermal properties of polyethylene/clay nanocomposites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and the surface properties were evaluated by light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. From mentioned characteristics, we conclude that presence of nanofiller in LDPE primarily causes shift of thermal degradation to higher temperatures and increasing of microhardness. All prepared LDPE nanocomposites possess an excellent and prolonged antifungal activity against Candida albicans.  相似文献

The isotopomers of halogenated amino acids (2'-F-L-phenylalanine, 3'-F- and 3'-Cl-L-tyrosine, as well as 5'-F-, 5'-Br-and 6'-F-L-tryptophan) specifically labeled with deuterium at α- and 13-carbon atom of the side chain were synthesized by enzymatic catalyzed H/D exchange in fully deuteriated incubation medium. The extent and site of deuterium incorporation were confirmed by ^1H NMR (proton nuclear magnetic resonance) spectra.  相似文献

The relationship between renal disease progression and genetic polymorphism of enzymes influencing endothelial function remains incompletely understood. We genotyped three cohorts of elderly Hungarian patients: 245 patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) on chronic hemodialysis (HD), 88 patients with mild chronic kidney disease (CKD), and 200 healthy controls. The underlying diagnoses of renal diseases were primary glomerulonephritis, interstitial nephritis, hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, and hereditary diseases. We examined genetic polymorphisms of eight candidate genes associated with endothelial function: endothelial constitutive nitric oxide synthase (ecNOS) T‐786C, endothelin‐1 G5727T, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T, paraoxonase‐1 Q192R and M55L, angiotensinogen M235T, angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE) I/D and angiotensin II type 1 receptor A1166C gene. Six gene polymorphisms were detected by real‐time polymerase chain reaction with melting‐point analysis, and two via allele‐specific amplification and gel electrophoresis. Control group patients were in Hardy‐Weinberg equilibrium for all tested genotypes. In ESRD patients attributed to hypertension, the endothelin gene G5727T GG genotype occurred significantly less but GT genotype more frequently (P < 0.01 for both). In ESRD patients attributed to primary glomerulonephritis, more ACE DD and less ID genotypes were found (P < 0.02 for both) than in the controls. The underlying diagnosis may modify the association of genetic polymorphism and dialysis‐dependent ESRD.  相似文献

Colloidal core-shell semiconductor nanocrystals form an important class of optoelectronic materials, in which the exciton wave functions can be tailored by the atomic configuration of the core, the interfacial layers, and the shell. Here, we provide a trustful 3D characterization at the atomic scale of a free-standing PbSe(core)-CdSe(shell) nanocrystal by combining electron microscopy and discrete tomography. Our results yield unique insights for understanding the process of cation exchange, which is widely employed in the synthesis of core-shell nanocrystals. The study that we present is generally applicable to the broad range of colloidal heteronanocrystals that currently emerge as a new class of materials with technological importance.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are prepared by implementing noncovalent compatibilization. The compatibilization method involves PP matrix functionalization with pyridine (Py) aromatic moieties, which are capable of π–π interaction with MWCNT sidewalls. Imaging revealed that the addition of 25 wt% of PP‐g‐Py to neat PP is capable of drastically reducing nanotube aggregate size and amount, compared to a matrix containing the equivalent amount of a maleated PP (PP‐g‐MA). Raman spectroscopy confirms improved polymer/nanotube interaction with the PP‐g‐Py matrix. The electrical percolation threshold appears at a MWCNT loading of approximately 1.2 wt%, and the maximum value of the electrical conductivity achieved is 10−2 S/m, irrespective of the functionalization procedure. The modulus of the composites is improved with the addition of MWCNTs. Furthermore, composites functionalized with Py display significant improvements in composite ductility compared with their maleated counterparts because of the improved filler dispersion. POLYM. BACKGROUND: In the tubers of Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) the main carbohydrate is the well‐known prebiotic inulin, which is a good growth substrate for gut microorganisms. Jerusalem artichoke tuber is traditionally consumed boiled or pickled rather than in fermented form. Lactic acid bacteria are traditionally used in the production of fermented foods; nevertheless their behavior and metabolite production are considerably influenced by the substrate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth and production of the most important sensorically and antimicrobially active metabolites of different Lactobacillus strains on Jerusalem artichoke juice. RESULTS: All investigated strains grew well (in the range 109 cfu mL?1) in the media. The organic acids (lactic acid, 110–337 mmol L?1; acetic acid, 0–180 mmol L?1; and succinic acid, 0–79 mmol L?1), hydrogen peroxide (0.25–1.77 mg L?1), mannitol (0.06–3.24 g L?1), acetoin and diacetyl production of strains varies not only according to the species but also from strain to strain, which will be demonstrated and discussed in the paper. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that lactobacilli can be used for the fermentation of Jerusalem artichoke, which in this form could be used, alone or mixed with other raw food material, as a new synbiotic functional food. In this work, the effect of active coating on the shelf life of low-moisture Mozzarella cheese packaged in air and modified atmosphere (MAP) was studied. The active coating was based on sodium alginate (2%, wt/vol) and potassium sorbate (1%, wt/vol). The MAP was made up of 75% CO2 and 25% N2 (MAP1), 25% CO2 and 75% N2 (MAP2), or 50% CO2 and 50% N2 (MAP3). The product quality decay was assessed by monitoring microbiological and sensory changes during storage at 4, 8, and 14°C. Results showed that the combination of active coating and MAP was able to improve the preservation of low-moisture Mozzarella cheese. Specifically, the shelf life increased up to 160 d for samples stored at 4°C, and 40 and 11 d for those at 8 and 14°C, respectively. A faster quality decay for untreated samples packaged in air was observed. In particular, the Pseudomonas spp. growth and the appearance of molds were responsible for product unacceptability. The combination of active coating and MAP represents a strategic solution to prolong the shelf life of low-moisture Mozzarella cheese and to ensure the safety of the product under thermal abuse conditions.  相似文献
