The atypical naevus is both a risk factor for and a precursor lesion of melanoma. Sunlight is known to be an important aetiological factor for melanoma. Whether solar exposure is also involved in the initiation of (atypical) naevi is an issue of current interest. We performed a cross-sectional study among 270 inhabitants in the cloudy Netherlands and 282 white Dutch immigrants of the tropical island Cura?ao to investigate whether solar exposure plays a role in the development of atypical naevi. All participants were interviewed and underwent total skin examination; banal melanocytic naevi and atypical naevi were counted. There was no significant difference in the mean number of melanocytic naevi > or = 2 mm or > or = 5 mm between Cura?ao and the Netherlands. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the mean crude and age standardized prevalence of atypical naevi between the Netherlands and Cura?ao. In both groups individuals with atypical naevi had significantly more total naevi. Concerning the role of sun exposure in the development of naevi in the Netherlands, we found that the total naevus count had a significant association with cumulative sun exposure before the age of 12 as well as with two or more painful sunburns before the age of 12. In Cura?ao these relationships were not observed. In contrast, however, on Cura?ao the presence of atypical naevi showed an association (odds ratio = 2.6, 95% confidence interval 1.1-6.0) with the highest level of cumulative sun exposure and with painful sunburns before the age of 12 (odds ratio = 2.6, 95% confidence interval 1.2-5.5). In the Dutch group these associations were not significant. We hypothesize that in the development of banal naevi there is an association between the total number of naevi and sun exposure only at low exposure levels; however, after overstepping a critical threshold a further association between melanocytic naevi and sun exposure is lacking. Sunlight exposure before the age of 12 plays a complex role: only very high exposure levels seem to contribute to the development of atypical naevi.  相似文献

In this work the relationship between the proliferation of bovine corneal epithelial cells and PGE2 has been studied. Our data indicate that PGE2 plays an important role in the growth of corneal epithelial cells. Actually, epithelial cells cultured on a keratocyte feeder-layer and exposed to indomethacin, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, have shown a decrease in growth rate at drug concentrations which otherwise did not induce a reduction in the viability of the keratocytes as well as in epithelial cells in separate cultures. This effect has been reversed by an exogenous PGE2 addition to the culture media. Moreover, significant increases have been found in the growth of epithelial cells cultured in the presence of keratocytes, with basal medium and with conditioning medium after adding exogenous PGE2 at concentrations equal to or lower than 10(-6) M. Significant decreases in the dimensions of the corneal epithelial cells have been found only when PGE2 has been added to basal and to conditioning medium, suggesting that the autacoid maintains cell dimension and morphology. The appearance of keratins with high molecular weight (54 and 57 kDa) coupled with the tendency to stratification of the cells cultivated with media supplemented with PGE2, indicates that the autacoid could favour cell differentiation. The action of PGE2 on the corneal epithelial cells does not seem to be influenced by the presence of the fibroblasts and their products, since PGE2 has induced increases in cell growth and morphological variations, independent of cultural conditions and therefore also only in the presence of basal medium.  相似文献

This work aims to explore possible ways of improving the precision of ignition measurements in the cone calorimeter. Both inherent repeatability of parts of the testing equipment and operator‐dependent variations are considered. Inherent repeatability is indicated to be slightly improved if the test samples used are circular rather than square. Operator‐dependent variation is discussed in terms of the method used for determining ignition. Four procedures are compared, namely, visual observation, usage of a light sensor, and looking at the peak of the second and first derivatives of the mass loss and heat release curves, respectively. Results indicate that the preferable operator‐independent method depends on the test conditions; the derivative of the heat release rate is an alternative to the mass loss rate derivative when the scale is of standardised quality. A light sensor for ignition time observation is a good option when the surrounding light is not changed during the test.  相似文献

Extreme weather events and associated damages have been increasing and these trends are expected to continue. Actions are being taken to enhance electricity system resilience. However, the justification for capital investments on resilience requires utilities to justify that the economic benefits outweigh the costs. This paper reviews the types of resilience measures being analyzed in cost-benefit analyses and addresses opportunities for improvement in characterizing the benefits for investments that enhance the resilience of electricity systems.  相似文献

Natural attenuation processes resulting from the afforestation of some U-waste rock piles have the potential to limit the linkage of radioelements and other trace pollutants, thereby minimizing exposure risks. We determined the evolution of pH and organic matter and compared the (226)Ra and Ca extractability in pyrite-containing mining debris which was revegetated 35 years ago with Scots pine. Oxidation of sulphidic minerals remaining in the substrate appeared to dominate over acidification processes due to vegetation inputs and litter decomposition. The accumulation of organic matter in forest floor had a negligible effect on the (226)Ra upward recycling compared to the migration losses observed mainly from decarbonatation of the surface mining debris. (226)Ra was overall less soluble than Ca in the soil profile but NH(4)Ac-pH 5 had the capacity to extract a (226)Ra fraction of 31.1-41.5%, i.e. at least twice as much as for Ca. In deeper layers, a majority of both Ca and (226)Ra were extractable from the same non-specific adsorption pool, which mainly involved carbonate. In the upper acidified layer, the incorporation of organic matter had no effect on (226)Ra extractability. A further specific adsorption pool for (226)Ra was attributed to the formation of sparingly soluble Fe-Al oxyhydroxides. However, that specific (226)Ra-bearing phase was readily dissolved in NH(4)Ac-pH 5, indicating a relatively reversibility of the precipitation reaction of (226)Ra with amorphous oxide. Trees are effective at reducing hydrological release of many pollutants but in the mining debris studied, four decades of pine growth did not significantly promote (226)Ra remediation in the soil.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the development of a program that aims at achieving the optimal integration of observed data in an oceanographic model describing the water transport phenomena in the Agulhas area at the tip of South Africa. Two parallel implementations, MPI and OpenMP, are described and experiments with respect to speed and scalability on a Compaq AlphaServer SC and an SGI Origin3000 are reported. This paper presents results from the analysis of the calibration results from the 1997 single burning item (SBI) test round‐robin. The influence of the method of determining delay times and response times for the parameters involved in the heat release rate (HRR) calculation, on the overall result of the HRR and the FIre Growth RAte (FIGRA) index is shown. A procedure to determine response times and delay times based on the analysis is proposed. Examples of how to find delay times and response times, and how time shifting the measured data according to these times influences the test results, are shown in detail. Finally a mathematical approach to analyse the influence of response times is given. Calculations are performed to show how the response time influences the result when heat output is changed in steps and how this can lead to incorrect measured data. This study presents the results from a set of 11 large‐scale open fire tests performed on flexible polyurethane foam slabs/mattresses. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of the ignition location on the fire behaviour of the foam slabs and to generate data on a highly characterised material that could be used for modelling work in the future. A method for obtaining spatially resolved flame spread data for this type of material was presented using a gridded array of 5 × 10 thermocouples placed on the underside the foam slab and from this, flame spread was examined using three different approaches. The heat release rate (HRR) results showed clear shapes forming that were dependent on the ignition location, with two distinct behaviours being observed between the various different ignition locations, this was also observed in the calculated flame spread rate (FSR) data. Results within an individual test, showed the calculated range of FSRs over the geometry of the slab varied between approximately 1 and 8 mm/s depending on the ignition location. The average FSR values between tests varied between 3 and 7 mm/s and the maximum and minimum values were calculated to be approximately 11 and 2 mm/s respectively.  相似文献

The first part of this study focuses on the effect of cone calorimeter test variables on polyurethane flexible foam properties such as ignitability, heat release rate, effective heat of combustion and mass loss. Three of the main commercial foam types were used, i.e. conventional slabstock foams, high-resilience slabstock foams and all-MDI (methylene diphenyldiisocyanate) moulded foams. A decrease in heat flux (down to 40%) with increasing distance from the conical heater was measured. As a consequence, results were found to depend to a large extent on the thickness and the melting behaviour of the foam samples. To achieve a sufficiently constant and uniform heat flux exposure, sample thickness had to be limited to 25 mm. In addition, repeatability was found to be good under various conditions, with percentage standard deviations for effective heat of combustion, peak rate of heat release and mass loss below 10%. Levels of radiant flux above 25 kW m?2 were found to be very severe to test flexible polyurethane foams. Under such conditions, foams that show large differences in combustion performance in small-scale flammability tests performed almost identically in the cone calorimeter. In the second part of this study the effects of foam variables, such as foam type, density and melamine content, are defined. These effects were clearly pronounced at radiant flux levels of 15–25 kWm?2. Density was found to be the key variable in controlling ignition resistance. In addition, high-resilience slabstock foams and all-MDI moulded foams performed better than conventional slabstock foams of the same density. Melamine addition resulted in a delay of ignition for all three foam types and an incomplete combustion, decreased heat release and effective heat of combustion in HR-slabstock and all MDI moulded foams. However, melamine is not effective as a heat sink in conventional slabstock foams. The different performance of the foam types under study can be explained by a different melting behaviour.  相似文献
