Using Labour Force Survey and census data to generate denominators for occupational injury rates: an application and expansion of Haggar-Guénette's method

The calculation of rates of occupational injury claims is essential to identify groups at high risk, yet limitations of denominator data have often restricted our capacity to do this. Haggar-Guénette's method of using Statistics Canada's data on paid workers from the Labour Force Survey as denominators has been expanded by incorporating information from the Census. The method is illustrated by calculating denominators for male construction industry workers within the province of Ontario. Information for paid workers employed in construction occupations was derived from the Labour Force Survey to produce denominators for those aged 15-64, overall and by 10-year age groups. Census data on the distribution of construction occupational roles were applied to produce denominators both overall, then simultaneously by age and by occupational role. Advantages and disadvantages, including the limitations or biases due to the differing sources for denominators and numerators are identified.     

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of human tissue factor extracellular domain

The extracellular domain (residues 1 to 220) of human tissue factor has been cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to isoelectric homogeneity. Single crystals suitable for X-ray analysis have been obtained by vapour diffusion. They belong to the tetragonal space group P4(1)2(1)2 or P4(3)2(1)2 with a = b = 45.2 A, c = 231.5 A, contain one molecule per asymmetric unit and diffract to 2.6 A resolution. Native and derivative data sets have been collected to 3.6 and 3.9 A, respectively.     

Structure--activity relationships in cephalosporins prepared from penicillins. 1. 7beta-Acylamino derivatives of 3-benzyl- and 3-(3-pyridylmethyl)ceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acids

tert-Butyl 7beta-aminoceph-3-em-4-carboxylates carrying either benzyl or 3-pyridylmethyl substituents at position 3 have been prepared by a multistep modification of the penicillin nucleus. Acylation of either amine, followed by deprotection, gave a range of new cephalosporins. The relationship between structure and antibacterial activity is discussed. D-Phenylglycine proved to be a preferred side chain in both series.
