We have developed a method based on melt coaxial electrospinning for fabricating phase change nanofibers consisting of long-chain hydrocarbon cores and composite sheaths. This method combines melt electrospinning with a coaxial spinneret and allows for nonpolar solids such as paraffins to be electrospun and encapsulated in one step. Shape-stabilized, phase change nanofibers have many potential applications as they are able to absorb, hold, and release large amounts of thermal energy over a certain temperature range by taking advantage of the large heat of fusion of long-chain hydrocarbons. We have focused on compounds with melting points near room temperature (octadecane) and body temperature (eicosane) as these temperature ranges are most valuable in practice. We have produced thermally stable, phase change materials up to 45 wt % octadecane, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry. In addition, the resultant fibers display novel segmented morphologies for the cores due to the rapid solidification of the hydrocarbons driven by evaporative cooling of the carrier solution. Aside from the fabrication of phase change nanofibers, the melt coaxial method is promising for applications related to microencapsulation and controlled release of drugs.  相似文献

Citrus fibre was used as a substitute for sucrose in the formulation of wheat-corn-based extrudates produced using twin screw extruder. Replacing 5 % sugar with an equal quantity of fibre resulted in an increase in die pressure, torque and specific mechanical energy (SME), and consequently the expansion ratio increased. A further increase in fibre content to 10 % (e.g. reducing sugar to 0 %) had little effect on the extrusion processing parameters. The microstructure of extrudates examined by X-ray computed tomography shows that the porosity of the extrudates increased with increasing fibre content, which was attributed to an increased number of large pores. As the citrus fibre content increased, the maximum force required to fracture the extrudate increased; however, the cell wall thickness decreased. This suggests that the fibre component may have contributed to the strength of the cell wall. This study demonstrated a potential utilisation of fibre from by-product of juice extraction as a source of dietary fibre in low sugar-extruded products.  相似文献

Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 108) were used to determine the associations of cytological endometritis (CE) with plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) as markers of energy metabolism, calculated energy balance (EB), and plasma haptoglobin (Hp) as a marker of inflammation during the periparturient period and early lactation. Evaluation of endometrial cytology by low-volume uterine lavage was conducted on 1 d between 40 and 60 d postcalving. The incidence of CE among cows sampled was 40%. The area under the curve (AUC) was calculated for both NEFA and BHBA using data collected from 3 wk before to 3 wk after parturition. Data for NEFA and BHBA AUC were stratified into prepartum (wk −3 to parturition) and postpartum (parturition to wk +3) for statistical analysis. Prepartum AUC for neither NEFA nor BHBA was associated with subsequent CE; however, cows that subsequently developed CE tended to have higher postpartum AUC for NEFA and had higher postpartum AUC for BHBA. Consistent with the results for plasma NEFA and BHBA, calculated EB during the prepartum period was not different in cows that did or did not develop CE; however, cows with CE had lower EB during the 6-wk postpartum period compared with cows without CE. Analysis of EB by week (wk −3 to −1 before calving and wk +1 to +6 postcalving) indicated that EB in cows with CE was lower at wk +1, +2, and +3 and tended to be lower at wk +6 than cows without CE. Plasma Hp concentrations were analyzed from wk +1 to +8 of lactation; concentrations of Hp were not different during either wk +1 or the entire postpartum period between cows that did or did not develop CE. These results suggest that lower energy status during the first 3 wk postpartum, but not necessarily systemic inflammation, is associated with subsequent development of CE.  相似文献

Mechanical tests have been used to assess the engineering properties of pea (Pisum sativum L) stems. Measurements were made on plants of three different genotypes at four different stages of development and at five defined locations along the stem. The force–displacement curves obtained were used to estimate values of the engineering properties of toughness and flexural modulus, from cutting and flexure mechanical tests respectively. Specimens of all genotypes showed an increase in toughness with age and generally also with stem height. However, there were marked differences in flexural modulus between genotypes. One genotype, known to exhibit a ‘stiff straw’ characteristic, showed a consistent increase in modulus with age and stem height, and at and beyond fruiting had substantially the greatest flexural modulus. The remaining genotypes showed decreasing flexural modulus with age. Chemometric methods were used to analyse sets of complete force–displacement curves, following suitable pre‐processing to allow the application of linear algebra methods. Whereas univariate consideration of the engineering quantities allowed trends to be observed, multivariate analysis of force–distance curves was able to model empirically the genotype differences so that individual specimens could be largely correctly classified. Examination of some of the model coefficients suggested that the ability to discriminate between genotypes is related to structural features of the specimens and that cutting tests in particular are sensitive to the anatomy of the specimen. This is the first time that chemometric methods have been applied to such data and suggests the potential of mechanical tests combined with multivariate analysis to form the basis of a screening system for phenotypic properties of new lines and varieties. One of the most promising ways to reduce the cost of photovoltaics is thin-film crystalline silicon solar cells. This paper, together with part 1, reviews the current state of research in thin-film crystalline silicon solar cells. Deposition on silicon, novel techniques which use a high-quality, reusable silicon substrate and light trapping have been described in part 1 of this paper. A collagen peptide motif (DGEA) which is a putative alpha 2 beta 1 integrin binding site was examined for its ability to activate Ca2+ signalling pathways in the human osteoblast-like cell line SaOS-2. We show that these cells express both alpha 2 beta 1 integrin subunits (by immunocytochemistry) and that an anti-beta 1 monoclonal antibody (DF5) mobilizes Ca2+ in these cells. DGEA elevated intracellular Ca2+ in fura-2-loaded cells, in a concentration- and sequence-dependent fashion, with an EC50 of 250 microM. The tyrosine kinase inhibitor herbimycin A reduced the number of cells responding to DGEA and to transforming growth factor alpha. Thrombin also stimulated a rise in intracellular Ca2+, but the number of cells responding was not reduced by herbimycin A. The DGEA response was dependent on extracellular Ca2+, but was not due to Ca2+ influx, since it was blocked by thapsigargin and not by lanthanum. Using three different anti-alpha 2 monoclonal antibodies, we were unable to show that the DGEA-induced Ca2+ signal was mediated by the alpha 2 beta 1 integrin. In summary, the DGEA collagen motif does appear to activate receptor-mediated Ca2+ signalling events in SaOS-2 cells, in a divalent cation-dependent manner, but we were unable to demonstrate a role for alpha 2 beta 1 integrin in this response.  相似文献
