Multiphase oxidation of trace organic constituents inside of complex atmospheric particles is not well understood. In this study, organic aerosol formed from flash-vaporized residual grease from meat cooking was exposed to atmospherically relevant ozone concentrations in a smog chamber for 4-6 h. Changes in particle composition were measured to determine reaction rates for important molecular markers used for source apportionment analysis (oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, and cholesterol). Results are also presented for palmitic and stearic acids and likely reaction products. To quantify oxidation rates over a range of atmospheric conditions, separate experiments were conducted at low and high relative humidity and using particles mixed with and without secondary organic aerosol. Although particle composition, relative humidity, and secondary organic aerosol all influence the reaction rates, the unsaturated compounds were rapidly oxidized in every experiment. At typical summertime conditions, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid and cholesterol are estimated to have a chemical lifetime of about one day. The experimentally determined reaction rates are used in conjunction with the chemical mass balance model to investigate the effects of aging on source apportionment estimates. The results highlight that assumptions regarding the photochemical stability of molecular markers can lead to substantial biases in predictions of receptor models. 相似文献

Smokers' minimal exposure to nicotine replacement treatments (NRTs) may account for poor compliance and outcome with these treatments. This study tested effects of information versus sampling of NRTs on smokers' preferences and expectations. The study was a crossover comparing information-only (INF) with sampling (SMP) methods for five NRTs: gum (2 and 4 mg), lozenges (2 and 4 mg), and inhalers. Subjects were given computer-based presentations on NRTs (INF) and rated and ranked use variables (e.g., ease, sensory/ritual, perceived relief, embarrassment) and overall choice for "use to quit." After INF testing, subjects sampled each NRT (SMP) and again rated and ranked drugs. SMP was brief (4 min) to mimic potential use in practice. Results showed changes in perceptions and preferences post-SMP. NRT preferences shifted for overall "use to quit" (59%) and most use variables (43%-63%) post-SMP. Inhalers (generally top choice) showed a 20% drop in choice to quit (p<.04) and a 24% drop in anticipated "relief of withdrawal" (p<.04) post-SMP; 4-mg lozenge ratings increased for "relief of withdrawal" (p<.02). Ratings improved post-SMP for three of the five NRTs ("ease of use," p<.05) but were reduced overall for liking "sensory action" (p<.003) and reduced for all but 2-mg gum for "use to quit" (p<.03). Positive changes were seen in improved ratings of NRTs chosen post-SMP. Given that reactions to NRTs change with experience, sampling should allow for a more realistic choice of NRT (self-tailoring) and better compliance versus current trial-and-error methods. 相似文献

The literature on the importance of plant pathogens sometimes emphasizes their possible role in historical food shortages and even in famines. Aside from such major crises, plant pathogens should also be seen as important reducers of crop performances, with impacts on system sustainability, from the ecological, agronomical, social, and economic standpoints – all contributing ultimately to affecting food security. These views need reconciliation in order to produce a clearer picture of the multidimensional effects of plant disease epidemics. Such a picture is needed for disease management today, but would also be useful for future policies. This article attempts to develop a framework that would enable assessment of the impacts of plant diseases, referred collectively to as crop health, on food security via its components. We have combined three different existing definitions of food security in order to develop a framework consisting of the following six components: (1) Availability. Primary production; (2) Availability. Import - Stockpiles; (3) Access. Physical and supply chain; (4) Access. Economic; (5) Stability of food availability; (6) Utility-Safety-Quality-Nutritive value. In this framework, components of food security are combined with three attributes of production situations: the nature of the considered crop (i.e. food- or non-food), the structure of farms (i.e. subsistence or commercial), and the structure of markets (i.e. weakly organized and local, to strongly organized and globalized). The resulting matrix: [Food security components] × [Attributes of production situations] provides a framework where the impacts of chronic, acute, and emerging plant disease epidemics on food security can be examined. We propose that, given the number of components and interactions at play, a systems modelling approach is required to address the functioning of food systems exposed to plant disease risks. This approach would have application in both the management of the current attrition of crop performances by plant diseases, and also of possible disease-induced shocks. Such an approach would also enable quantifying shifts in disease vulnerability of production situations, and therefore, of food systems, as a result of climate change, globalization, and evolving crop health. 相似文献

The nature of the childhood development of immediate recall has been difficult to determine. There could be a developmental increase in either the number of chunks held in working memory or the use of grouping to make the most of a constant capacity. In 3 experiments with children in the early elementary school years and adults, we show that improvements in the immediate recall of word and picture lists come partly from increases in the number of chunks of items retained in memory. This finding was based on a distinction between access to a studied group of items (i.e., recall of at least 1 item from the group) and completion of the accessed group (i.e., the proportion of the items recalled from the group). How uncertain are climate model projections of water availability indicators across the Middle East?

The projection of robust regional climate changes over the next 50 years presents a considerable challenge for the current generation of climate models. Water cycle changes are particularly difficult to model in this area because major uncertainties exist in the representation of processes such as large-scale and convective rainfall and their feedback with surface conditions. We present climate model projections and uncertainties in water availability indicators (precipitation, run-off and drought index) for the 1961-1990 and 2021-2050 periods. Ensembles from two global climate models (GCMs) and one regional climate model (RCM) are used to examine different elements of uncertainty. Although all three ensembles capture the general distribution of observed annual precipitation across the Middle East, the RCM is consistently wetter than observations, especially over the?mountainous areas. All future projections show decreasing precipitation (ensemble median between -5 and -25%) in coastal Turkey and parts of Lebanon, Syria and Israel and consistent run-off and drought index changes. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) GCM ensemble exhibits drying across the north of the region, whereas the Met Office Hadley Centre work Quantifying Uncertainties in Model ProjectionsAtmospheric (QUMP-A) GCM and RCM ensembles show slight drying in the north and significant wetting in the south. RCM projections also show greater sensitivity (both wetter and drier) and a wider uncertainty range than QUMP-A. The nature of these uncertainties suggests that both large-scale circulation patterns, which influence region-wide drying/wetting patterns, and regional-scale processes, which affect localized water availability, are important sources of uncertainty in these projections. To reduce large uncertainties in water availability projections, it is suggested that efforts would be well placed to focus on the understanding and modelling of both large-scale processes and their teleconnections with Middle East climate and localized processes involved in orographic precipitation. 相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with > 95% purity were synthesized over a Fe-Co/CaCO3 catalyst using chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Both the CNT yield and the outer diameters increased with time on line in the presence of acetylene. More significantly, the tubes were reduced in length and became stub-like with time. TEM analysis revealed that the CNTs commenced shortening after 2 h of reaction time. Reagent residues (e.g., Ca, CaO, OH/COOH groups and Fe-Co oxides) were found not to influence the CNT bond breaking reaction. CNT growth over Fe-Co supported on silica or CaCO3-Ca3(PO4)2 gave similar results. Further, MWCNTs produced by a floating catalyst method, carbon helices produced from Fe-Co-In/A2O3, and N doped CNTs also revealed tube shortening as a function of reaction time under a flow of acetylene. It is thus apparent that MWCNTs can readily be shortened by the facile procedure of depositing carbon from excess C2H2 on the outer walls of CNTs. 相似文献
