Bayes' theorem and quantum retrodiction

Abstract

We derive on the basis of Bayes' theorem a simple but general expression for the retrodicted premeasurement state associated with the result of any measurement. The retrodictive density operator is the normalized probability operator measure element associated with the result. We examine applications to quantum optical cryptography and to the optical beam splitter.     

Quantum nature of laser light

All compositions of a mixed-state density operator are equivalent for the prediction of the probabilities of future outcomes of measurements. For retrodiction, however, this is not the case. The retrodictive formalism of quantum mechanics provides a criterion for deciding that some compositions are fictional. Fictional compositions do not contain preparation device operators, that is operators corresponding to states that could have been prepared. We apply this to Mølmer's controversial conjecture that optical coherences in laser light are a fiction and find agreement with his conjecture. We generalize Mølmer's derivation of the interference between two lasers to avoid the use of any fictional states. We also examine another possible method for discriminating between coherent states and photon number states in laser light and find that it does not work, with the equivalence for prediction saved by entanglement.     

Using strategic management practices to promote participatory democracy in Australian local government

Abstract

Strategic management was introduced as a critical component of Australian local government reform during the 1990s. In addition to encouraging efficiency and effectiveness of operation, it was also intended to promote participatory democracy within local authorities. The paper explores the extent to which this objective has been achieved through an analysis of twenty‐five New South Wales municipalities. Discussion concludes that while strategic management has enhanced community involvement in local governance, it cannot be a substitute for traditional democratic processes.     

Computationally intensive econometrics using a distributed matrix-programming language

This paper reviews the need for powerful computing facilities in econometrics, focusing on concrete problems which arise in financial economics and in macroeconomics. We argue that the profession is being held back by the lack of easy-to-use generic software which is able to exploit the availability of cheap clusters of distributed computers. Our response is to extend, in a number of directions, the well-known matrix-programming interpreted language Ox developed by the first author. We note three possible levels of extensions: (i) Ox with parallelization explicit in the Ox code; (ii) Ox with a parallelized run-time library; and (iii) Ox with a parallelized interpreter. This paper studies and implements the first case, emphasizing the need for deterministic computing in science. We give examples in the context of financial economics and time-series modelling.     

Chandlerism in post-war Europe: strategic and structural change in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, 1950-1993: a comment

Whittington et al. (Industrial and Corporate Change, 1999, 8,519–550) argue that the conglomerate is a relatively transientphenomenon. However, this comment on their article argues thatexamination of their data suggests that the conglomerate maybe more persistent than is generally believed. It is arguedthat the reason for this may be found in the contribution thisstrategy may make to dealing with technologically turbulentenvironments. The results of Whittington et al. are comparedwith other studies of large firm strategies, and some testableimplications are suggested.     

QSAR studies of the pyrethroid insecticides. Part 3. A putative pharmacophore derived using methodology based on molecular dynamics and hierarchical cluster analysis

Previous studies of the conformational behaviour of a group of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides have been extended to a more structurally diverse set. This includes compounds with different backbones and differing stereochemistry, with both Types I and II biological activity. These compounds also encompass a large range of biological activities. A parameterisation of the CHARMM force field for these compounds has been performed and the extra parameters are reported. Conformational sampling, using molecular dynamics (MD), has been performed for each of the 41 active structures. The accessible conformations of each have been characterised by the values of the common torsion angles using hierarchichal cluster analysis (HCA). A further CA, based on the centroids derived from the conformational sampling, identified a conformation common to at least 39 of the 41 structures. The critical torsion angles of this conformation lie at the centre of the molecule about the ester linkage and are defining an extended conformation, which differs from the minimum energy conformation of deltamethrin used previously. This may represent a putative pharmacophore for kill. The methods used here improve significantly on those used previously. The CHARMM force field was parameterised for the compounds and an improved method of conformational sampling, based on centroid clustering, has also been used.     

Domain organization of the extracellular region of CD45

CD45 is a large, heavily glycosylated, transmembrane proteinphosphotyrosine phosphatase found on all nucleated cells ofhaematopoietic origin. In lymphocytes, the cytoplasmic phosphataseis necessary for efficient signalling through the antigen receptorbut in contrast little is known about the interactions of theextracellular region of the molecule. This consists of a mucin-likeregion, a novel cysteine-containing region and a region containingthree putative fibronectin type III domains. To confirm thisorganization and to identify parts potentially important forfunction, we have expressed fragments of the extracellular domainof rat CD45 as recombinant soluble proteins. Proteins correspondingto two, three and four domains of CD45 were expressed in secretedforms. Single domains and constructs for proteins with truncationsof the predicted domains were not expressed. This is consistentwith the proposed structural organization. Determination ofthe positions of the disulphide bonds in the N-terminal cysteine-containingregion and the first fibronectin type III domain identifiednovel disulphide bonds within the fibronectin type III domainand an unusual inter-domain disulphide linkage. Circular dichroismspectroscopy indicated that this region of rat CD45 has mainlyß-strand secondary structure and no -helical content.These studies support the proposed domain organization of CD45.
