Computer tomography has been used frequently for the 3‐D visualization of plant anatomical traits but sample preparation has been widely neglected. Without any preparation smaller (i.e., up to 1 × 1 cm2) turgescent or semi‐dry plant samples (especially leaf samples) diminish the image quality of a scan due to gradual water loss and therefore constant movement. A suitable preparation for scans of turgescent and semi‐dry plant samples with a high resolution μCT (<1–5 μm) has to be very thin, heat‐resistant (up to 35°C), have a low attenuation coefficient, and should not alter the water content and structure of the sample. Several agents have been tested, but only a coating with vaseline conserved the water content of a plant sample efficiently. However, water molecules and vaseline both attenuate the X‐ray beam, which decreases the image quality of scans of turgescent or semi‐dry plant samples. Therefore, trade‐offs between the spatial resolution, sample water content, sample size, and image quality have to be considered: larger samples have to be placed further away from the X‐ray tube, which leads to a lower spatial resolution; water and preparation agents attenuate the X‐ray beam, causing low‐quality images which may be accompanied by motion artifacts compared to a scan of a dry sample, where no preparation is necessary. 1. The specificity for the location of a sound source in azimuth was measured in single neurons of the anterior ectosylvian (AE) region of the cat's cortex, which includes the anterior auditory field (AAF) and the anterior ectosylvian auditory field (AEA). 2. The influence of visual experience on auditory spatial tuning of these neurons was determined by comparing responses in cats with binocular deprivation from birth with those in normal control cats. 3. Spatial tuning was measured under near free-field conditions by presenting broadband sounds through a speaker in seven different azimuthal locations, from -60 to +60 degree at 20 degree intervals. Elevation was constant at the cats' ears. 4. In normal cats, a little over one-half of the neurons in the AE region (82/146 = 56%) showed some degree of azimuthal spatial tuning, as defined by at least a 2:1 ratio of responses between best and worst location. The rest (44%) were omnidirectional. 5. In binocularly deprived cats, a significantly higher proportion (70/82 = 86%) of the neurons in the AE region were spatially tuned. Only 14% were omnidirectional. Median spatial tuning width was significantly sharper than in normal cats. 6. We conclude that visual deprivation from birth induces intermodal changes that enhance the response specificity of neurons in the auditory cortex. These modifications may constitute the neural basis of behavioral compensation for early blindness.  相似文献

Fatty liver (steatosis) occurs in obese patients, among others, and is related to the development of diabetes type-2. Timely diagnosis of steatosis is therefore of great importance. Steatosis is also the most common liver disease of high-yielding dairy cattle during early lactation. This makes it a suitable animal model for studying liver steatosis. Furthermore, reference of derived ultrasound parameters against a "gold standard" is possible in cattle by taking a liver biopsy for the assessment of fat concentration. The authors undertook this pilot study to investigate the hypothesis that quantitative, computer-aided B-mode ultrasound enables the noninvasive detection of hepatic steatosis. Echographic images were obtained postpartum from dairy cows (n = 12) in transcutaneous and direct (intraoperative) applications using a convex array transducer at 4.2 MHz. During surgery, a biopsy was taken from the caudate lobe to assess the liver fat content (fat score). A custom-designed software package for computer-aided ultrasound diagnosis (CAUS) was developed. After linearizing the post-processing look-up-table (LUT), the image gray levels were transferred into echo levels in decibels relative to the mean echo level in a tissue-mimicking phantom. The quantitative comparison of transcutaneous and intraoperative images enabled the correction for the attenuation effect of skin and subcutaneous fat layer on the mean echo level in the liver, as well as for the effects of the beam formation and attenuation of liver tissue on the echo level vs. depth. The residual attenuation coefficient (dB/cm) in fatty liver vs. normal liver was estimated and compensated for. Finally, echo level was estimated relative to the phantom used for calibration, and echo texture was characterized by the mean axial and lateral speckle size within the regions of interest. In the no fat/low fat group (n = 5) skin plus fat layer attenuation was 3.4 dB/cm. A correlation of skin layer thickness vs. fat score of r = 0.48 was found. The mean transcutaneous liver tissue echo level correlated well with fat score: r = 0.80. A residual liver attenuation coefficient of 0.76 dB/cm and 1.19 dB/cm was found in medium and high fat liver, respectively. In transcutaneous images, correlation of residual attenuation coefficient with fat score was r = 0.69. Axial and lateral speckle sizes were on the order of 0.2 and 1.0 cm, respectively, and no correlation was found with liver fat content. Results for transcutaneous and intraoperative images were similar. The authors conclude that this pilot study shows the feasibility of calibrated, computer-aided ultrasound for noninvasively diagnosing, possibly even screening, steatosis of the liver.  相似文献

An intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H(i)) film and a doped silicon film are usually combined in the heterojunction contacts of silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells. In this work, a post-doping process called catalytic doping (Cat-doping) on a-Si:H(i) is performed on the electron selective side of SHJ solar cells, which enables a device architecture that eliminates the additional deposition of the doped silicon layer. Thus, a single phosphorus Cat-doping layer combines the functions of two other layers by enabling excellent interface passivation and high carrier selectivity. The overall thinner layer on the window side results in higher spectral response at short wavelengths, leading to an improved short-circuit current density of 40.31 mA cm−2 and an efficiency of 23.65% (certified). The cell efficiency is currently limited by sputter damage from the subsequent transparent conductive oxide fabrication and low carrier activation in the a-Si:H(i) with Cat-doping. Numerical device simulations show that the a-Si:H(i) with Cat-doping can provide sufficient field effect passivation even at lower active carrier concentrations compared to the as-deposited doped layer, due to the lower defect density.  相似文献

We investigated the electrical signatures of iron corrosion and mineral precipitation in angle cores from an Fe(0) barrier installation in operation for eight years. The real and imaginary parts of the complex electrical conductivity measured between 0.1 and 1000 Hz were 2-10 times higher (varying between cores) in the reacted zone at the upgradient edge of the barrier relative to less altered locations inside the barrier. Scanning electron microscopy identified iron surface alteration with the thickest corrosion rinds closest to the upgradient soil/iron interface. Surface area of iron minerals was also greatest at the upgradient interface, gradually decreasing into the cores. X-ray diffractometry identified precipitation of iron oxide/hydroxide, carbonate minerals, iron sulfide, as well as green rusts, with mineral complexity decreasing away from the interface. The electrical measurements correlate very well with the solid-phase analyses, and they verify that electrical methods could be used to assess or monitor iron corrosion and mineral precipitation occurring in Fe(0) barriers.  相似文献

Holographic displays employing binary phase modulation have been demonstrated to be attractive on the grounds of efficiency and miniaturization, and they offer a plausible approach to two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) image projection and display. A novel algorithm--one-step phase retrieval--and corresponding hardware architecture have recently been proposed, providing the performance required for real-time holographic display. However, since viewing angle varies inversely with pixel size, very small display pixels are required to achieve a wide field of view. This is particularly problematic for 3D displays, as the requirement for a large display with small pixels has hitherto necessitated an unachievably large electrical bandwidth. We present a novel approach, utilizing fixed random pixelated quaternary phase masks of greater resolution than the displayed hologram, to dramatically increase the viewing angle for 2D and 3D holographic displays without incurring a bandwidth penalty or significantly degrading image quality. Furthermore, an algorithm is presented to generate holograms accounting for the presence of such a phase mask, so that only one mask is required.  相似文献

SRON is developing the Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) read-out and the ultra low NEP TES bolometers array for the infra-red spectrometer SAFARI on board of the Japanese space mission SPICA. The FDM prototype of the instrument requires critical and complex optimizations. For single pixel characterization under AC bias we are developing a simple FDM system working in the frequency range from 1 to 5 MHz, based on the open loop read-out of a linearized two-stage SQUID amplifier and high Q lithographic LC resonators. We describe the details of the experimental set-up required to achieve low power loading (<1?fW) and low noise ( $\mathrm{NEP}\sim 10^{-19}~\mathrm{W}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ ) in the TES bolometers. We conclude the paper by comparing the performance of a $4\times 10^{-19}~\mathrm{W}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ TES bolometer measured under DC and AC bias.  相似文献
