Human exposure to heavy metals in East Greenland I mercury

The concentration of mercury in 178 blood samples and 32 hair samples from the Angmagssalik district in East Greenland has been determined.For Greenlanders mercury concentrations are highly dependent on the amount of seal eaten. In the most heavily exposed group (eating more than six meals of seal per week), a significant positive correlation between blood mercury and age was demonstrated. No differences according to sex were demonstrated when the mean values were corrected for influence of age. In the most heavily exposed group, a mean value of 62.5 μg Hg/l was found, while in the group eating 1 meal of seal or less per week, the mean value was 22.2 μg Hg/l. In the control group consisting of Danes living temporarily in the district, the mean blood mercury concentration was 5.8 corresponding to the fact that they eat seal only occasionally.Hair mercury concentrations were found to correlate well with blood mercury concentrations (r = 0.9222). The hair/blood ratio was estimated to 289.It is concluded that the present relatively high mercury exposure in Greenland does not excert any immediate risk of intoxication to the adult population, but supplementary investigation on fetal exposure is needed.     

Effect of Chlorophenoxyacetic Acid Growth-Regulator Sprays on Residues in Canned Apricots and Grapes

SUMMARY— A, gas-liquid chromatographic method coupled with an electron capture detector has been developed for analyzing chlorinated phenoxyacetic acid residues in canned fruits. The technique involves converting the acid to its methyl ester with diazomethane, chromatography on a 5% silicone grease SE-30 column at 210°C, and subsequent detection of the compound by an electron capture detector. As low as 0.02 ppm of the residue could be detected. The method is superior to the calorimetric method because parachlorophenoxyacetic acid (PCPA), 2,4-D, and 2,4,5-T can be separated and quantitatively determined simultaneously. However, separate standard curves are needed for each, because they differ in chlorine content and in sensitivity toward the electron capture detector. Levels of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T residues in canned apricots, and of PCPA in canned grapes are reported.     

Changes in lipid composition of germinating barley embryo

Barley seeds,Hordeum vulgare, var. Kenia, were dissected before and after 5 days of germination, to distinguish between the scutellum, the coleoptile half of the embryo and the coleorhiza half of the embryo. Total lipids were extracted from each fraction and analyzed by thin layer chromatography and gas liquid chromatography. In tissues from the coleoptile and coleorhiza halves of the embryo there was a concurrent disappearance of triglycerides with a marked increase of esterified sterols and esterified sterol glucosides. In the scutellum there was also a change in triglycerides, but the variations in contents of esterified sterols and esterified sterol glucosides were much smaller. Mono- and digalactolipids were virtually absent from embryonic tissue. The amounts of linoleic and linolenic acids in esterified sterol glucosides were increased after 5 days of germination in all the embryonic tissues, especially in the coleoptile half. In sterol esters, linoleic acid comprised nearly half of the total fatty acids, and the desaturation after 5 days of germination was much less pronounced.     

Pressure dependence of the electric conductance of aqueous solutions of LiCl,KCl and (CH3)4NCl. Correlation of kinetic parameters

The electrical conductivity and the compression of solutions of LiCl, KCl, and (CH₃)₄NCl have been measured as a function of pressure up to 2 kbar at the temperatures 25°, 35° and 45°C in the concentration range 0·1–1 molal. The results are discussed in terms of the transition state theory in relation to kinetic parameters for viscous flow and partial molal volume.
