The activity concentration of uranium and thorium present in zircon obtained from mineral sand industries are presented. External gamma radiation levels and inhalation of airborne dust are found to be the significant routes of radiation exposure to occupational workers. The annual average dose attributed to zircon processing is estimated to be 2.3 mSv in the plants under study. This paper presents the results of external gamma measurements, estimation of airborne radioactivity in zircon process locations and radon and thoron in the occupational environment of two mineral separation plants in India. Analyses of the solid wastes and liquid effluent generated and resultant environmental impacts are indicated. 相似文献

Deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements were carried out on low-doped n-silicon before and after irradiation with 5.48 MeV α particles at room temperature with a fluence of 1010 α particles/cm2. The DLTS measurements on the samples identified three electron levels E1, E2 and E3 before irradiation. The deep-levels characteristic studies include emission rate signatures, activation energies, defect concentrations and capture cross sections. It was found that all pre-existing defects decreased their amplitudes during irradiation. The decrease in activation energy of level E3 and noticeable suppression of level E1 was also observed after irradiation. It was clearly seen that the composite peak E3 (combination of E2 and E3) was successfully resolved after irradiating with α particles. α-irradiation is seen to lead a significant suppression of the iron interstitial defect, and without causing any change in its room temperature annealing characteristics. 相似文献

We present a method to determine the average device channel temperature of AlGaN/GaN metal–oxide–semiconductor heterostructure field effect transistors (MOSHFETs) in the time domain under continuous wave (CW) and periodic-pulsed RF (radiation frequency) operational conditions. The temporal profiles of microwave output power densities of GaN MOSHFETs were measured at 2 GHz under such conditions and used for determination of the average channel temperature. The measurement technique in this work is also being utilized to determine the thermal time constant of the devices. Analytical temporal solutions of temperature profile in MOSHFETs are provided to support the method. The analytical solutions can also apply to generic field effect transistors (FETs) with an arbitrary form of time-dependent heat input at the top surface of the wafer. It is found that the average channel temperature of GaN MOSHFETs on a 300 μm sapphire substrate with the output power of 10 W/mm can be over 400 °C in the CW mode while the average channel temperature of GaN MOSHFETs on a SiC substrate with the same thickness only reaches 50 °C under the same condition. The highest average channel temperature in a pulsed RF mode will vary with respect to the duty cycle of the pulse and type of the substrate. 相似文献

A methodology to simulate memory structures with metal nanocrystal islands embedded as floating gate in a high-κ dielectric material for simultaneous enhancement of programming speed and retention time is presented. The computational concept is based on a model for charge transport in nano-scaled structures presented earlier, where quantum mechanical tunneling is defined through the wave impedance that is analogous to the transmission line theory. The effects of substrate-tunnel dielectric conduction band offset and metal work function on the tunneling current that determines the programming speed and retention time is demonstrated. Simulation results confirm that a high-κ dielectric material can increase programming current due to its lower conduction band offset with the substrate and also can be effectively integrated with suitable embedded metal nanocrystals having high work function for efficient data retention. A nano-memory cell designed with silver (Ag) nanocrystals embedded in Al2O3 has been compared with similar structure consisting of Si nanocrystals in SiO2 to validate the concept. 相似文献

This letter introduces a simple ultra-wideband suspended stripline filter with a pass-band from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz and a very wide stop-band up to more than 25 GHz. The filter is realized by capacitive coupling of a quasi-lumped low-pass filter to the I/O ports. Insertion loss in the pass-band is better than 0.5 dB. The filter has a length of 13.8 mm. The Dominican Republic is a tobacco-growing country, and tobacco control efforts there have been virtually nonexistent. This study provides a first systematic surveillance of tobacco use in six economically disadvantaged Dominican Republic communities (two small urban, two peri-urban, two rural; half were tobacco growing). Approximately 175 households were randomly selected in each community (total N = 1,048), and an adult household member reported on household demographics and resources (e.g., electricity), tobacco use and health conditions of household members, and household policies on tobacco use. Poverty and unemployment were high in all communities, and significant gaps in access to basic resources such as electricity, running water, telephones/cell phones, and secondary education were present. Exposure to tobacco smoke was high, with 38.4% of households reporting at least one tobacco user, and 75.5% allowing smoking in the home. Overall, 22.5% reported using tobacco, with commercial cigarettes (58.0%) or self-rolled cigarettes (20.1%) the most commonly used types. Considerable variability in prevalence and type of use was found across communities. Overall, tobacco use was higher in males, illiterate groups, those aged 45 or older, rural dwellers, and tobacco-growing communities. Based on reported health conditions, tobacco attributable risks, and World Health Organization mortality data, it is estimated that at least 2,254 lives could potentially be saved each year in the Dominican Republic with tobacco cessation. Although it is expected that the reported prevalence of tobacco use and health conditions represent underestimates, these figures provide a starting point for understanding tobacco use and its prevalence in the Dominican Republic. 相似文献

Ruminal parameters, rumen development, nutrient digestibilities, and N utilization were estimated in Holstein calves fed starch from different sources. Ground corn, ground barley, ground wheat, and crimped oats were used to formulate 4 isostarch (25% of starter dry matter) pelleted diets. These diets were randomly allocated to calves (16 calves per treatment, 8 female and 8 male) and fed ad libitum along with mixed grass hay throughout the experiment. Ruminal contents and blood were sampled at d 35, 50, and 70 of age to estimate ruminal parameters and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate, respectively. At d 70, twenty-four male calves (6/treatment) were randomly selected, euthanized, and forestomach weight, papillae length (PL), papillae width (PW), rumen wall thickness (RWT), and papillae concentration were measured. At d 63, twenty-four female calves (6/treatment) were randomly selected and moved to metabolism stalls to estimate total tract apparent nutrient digestibilities and N utilization. Female calves were given 2 wk for adaptation to experimental facilities and then total collections of feces and urine were made from d 77 to 84 of age. Ruminal pH at d 35 of age was higher in calves fed corn and oat diets than in those fed barley and wheat diets. Ruminal pH at d 50 and 70 of age was the lowest in calves on barley diets followed by those on oat and wheat diets and then by those on the corn diet. Ruminal total volatile fatty acid concentrations at d 35 of age were greatest in calves fed corn or wheat diets followed by those fed barley and oat diets. Calves on corn and wheat diets maintained greater ruminal volatile fatty acids concentrations at d 50 and 70 of age. Ruminal ammonia, acetate, propionate, butyrate, and blood β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations were also greater in calves on the corn and wheat diets. Full and empty weights of forestomach, PL, PW, RWT, and papillae concentrations were greater in calves on corn and wheat diets. Daily average intake of nutrients (dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, starch, Ca, and P) was greater in calves fed corn and wheat diets than in those fed barley and oat diets. Starch source did not influence the total tract apparent digestibilities of nutrients in calves. Daily N retention (g/d) was greatest on the corn diet followed by the wheat diet and then the barley and oat diets. In conclusion, calves on a corn diet have greater ruminal capacity to accommodate feed bulk. More physically and metabolically functional rumens in calves on corn and wheat diets probably resulted in greater feed consumption and N retention. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The fruit of date palm is consumed as an ideal high‐energy food. It is also used for the treatment of colds, fever, liver and abdominal troubles. Its nutritional composition strongly depends upon variety and ripening stage. A number of varieties are available in Pakistan but little is known about their composition and nutritional characteristics. Inherent moisture, volatile matter, ash, fixed carbon, sugar and mineral metals of seven commercial date varieties (Aseel, Basra, Begun, Janshoor, Mazoee, Rabee and Zaidi) were investigated. The physical and chemical compositions with respect to maturation were also monitored for the Aseel variety. RESULTS: The results showed significant varietal differences in moisture, ash and mineral metal composition when analysis of means was conducted at an alpha level of 0.05. The difference between means was insignificant (P > 0.05) for volatile matter, glucose, fructose and total reducing sugars. All varieties were found to be an excellent source of total reducing sugar (78%), potassium (403–632 mg per 100 g) and calcium (27.41–81.47 mg per 100 g). A gradual increase in total reducing sugar and minerals, especially potassium and copper, was observed with maturation. Variety Aseel was grouped on the basis of maturation using principal component analysis. Local date varieties were separated with 48.63% level of similarity from Iranian variety (29.17%) using Cluster analysis. CONCLUSION: This study provides an overview of the physico‐chemical properties of date varieties. The sample varieties showed significant differences except for sugar and volatile matter. Multivariate analysis was found to be an important statistical tool for the separation of samples on the basis of geographical origin and maturations.
