The effects of operating parameters such astransmembrane pressure, retentate, and recirculation volumetric flow rates on the productivity of an ultrafiltration membrane were studied using field data and development of a management model. Correlation equations for predicting the volumetric permeate flow rates were derived from general membrane blocking laws and experimental data. The experimental data were obtained from a pilot study carried out in the Arad wastewater treatment system (a pilot plant operating in feed and bleed operation mode) located several kilometers west of the City of Arad, Israel. Correlation predictions were confirmed with the independent experimental results. The results enabled us to develop a mathematical expression accurately describing the decline in flux due to fouling.  相似文献

Cystoliths are amorphous calcium carbonate bodies that form in the leaves of some plant families. Cystoliths are regularly distributed in the epidermis and protrude into the photosynthetic tissue, the mesophyll. The photosynthetic pigments generate a steep light gradient in the leaf. Under most illumination regimes the outer mesophyll is light saturated, thus the photosynthetic apparatus is kinetically unable to use the excess light for photochemistry. Here we use micro‐scale modulated fluorometry to demonstrate that light scattered by the cystoliths is distributed from the photosynthetically inefficient upper tissue to the efficient, but light deprived, lower tissue. The results prove that the presence of light scatterers reduces the steep light gradient, thus enabling the leaf to use the incoming light flux more efficiently. MicroCT and electron microscopy confirm that the spatial distribution of the minerals is compatible with their optical function. During the study we encountered large calcium oxalate druses in the same anatomical location as the cystoliths. These druses proved to have similar light scattering functions as the cystoliths. This study shows that certain minerals in the leaves of different plants distribute the light flux more evenly inside the leaf.  相似文献

Silica particles are mainly used for the concentration of nucleic acid for diagnostic purposes. This is usually done under acidic or chaotropic conditions that will demolish most of the living organisms and prevent the application of other diagnostic tests. Here we describe the development of a method for the capturing and concentration of Bacillus spores using silica magnetic particles to enable fast and sensitive detection. We have shown that capturing various Bacilli spores via silica magnetic particles is limited, with large differences between spore batches (42 +/- 25%). The hydrophobic exosporium layer of spore limits the capture by the hydrophilic silica beads. Partial removal of Bacillus exosporium increases capture efficiency. To increase capturing efficiency without harming the spores' viability, a cationic lipid, didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), was used as a coat for the negatively charged silica particles. DDAB treatment increased capture efficiency from 42% to more than 90%. Using this method, we were able to capture as few as 100 Bacillus anthracis spores/mL with 90% efficacy. Release of captured spores was achieved by the addition of albumin. The capture and release processes were verified by plating and by flow cytometry using light scatter analysis. The method is simple, efficient, easy to operate, and fast.  相似文献

Near simultaneous collection of 34 surface water samples and airborne multispectral scanner data provided input for regression models developed to predict surface concentrations of estuarine chlorophyll a. Two wavelength ratios were employed in model development. The ratios werechosen to capitalize on the spectral characteristics of chlorophyll a, while minimizing atmospheric influences. Models were then applied to data previously acquired over the study area thre years earlier. Results are in the form of color-coded displays of predicted chlorophyll a concentrations and comparisons of the agreement among measured surface samples and predictions basedon coincident remotely sensed data. The influence of large variations in fresh-water inflow to the estuary are clearly apparent in the results. The synoptic view provided by remote sensing is another method of examining important estuarine dynamics difficult to observe from in situ sampling alone.  相似文献

In various industries jobs undergo a batching, or burn in, process where different tasks are grouped into batches and processed simultaneously. The processing time of each batch is equal to the longest processing time among all jobs contained in the batch. All to date studies dealing with batching machines have considered fixed job processing times. However, in many real life applications job processing times are controllable through the allocation of a limited resource. The most common and realistic model assumes that there exists a non-linear and convex relationship between the amount of resource allocated to a job and its processing time. The scheduler?s task when dealing with controllable processing times is twofold. In addition to solving the sequencing problem, one must establish an optimal resource allocation policy. We combine these two widespread models on a single machine setting, showing that both the makespan and total completion time criteria can be solved in polynomial time. We then show that our proposed approach can be applied to general bi-criteria objective comprising of the makespan and the total completion time.  相似文献

Treated domestic secondary effluent is a valuable water source that can be reused for diverse purposes. However, in order to minimize health and environmental risks and to maintain adequate levels of sustainable agriculture production on a long range time scale, advanced treatment is required. Advanced effluent quality maintaining minimal risks can be primarily attained by implementing the membrane technology. Field experiments are in progress for secondary wastewater polishing for unrestricted reuse for sustainable agricultural production. The two stage membrane treatment system for the secondary effluent polishing consists of combining two main stages: ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane treatment. The UF stage is efficient in the removal of the organic matter and the pathogens while the RO provides the dissolved solids (salinity) removal. Effluent of various qualities is applied for irrigation along with continuous monitoring of the membrane components performance. The experimental data was obtained in the ongoing pilot studies carried out near the City of Arad (Israel) wastewater treatment system (the pilot plant performs in a feed and bleed operation mode). The results indicate the importance of maintaining high quality effluent for sustainable agriculture production. The management modeling gives an idea of the importance in maintaining adequate UF flushing policy in order to minimize expenses due to fouling.  相似文献
