Palladium‐catalyzed decarboxylative sp‐sp2 cross‐coupling reactions of aryl and vinyl halides and triflates with α,β‐ynoic acids using silver oxide have been developed. A variety of α,β‐ynoic acids were readily decarboxylated in the presence of silver oxide and then, generated in situ, silver acetylides were coupled with electrophiles in the presence of a palladium(0) catalyst under neutral conditions, producing either symmetrical or unsymmetrical diarylacetylenes, arylalkylacetylenes and arylvinylacetylenes in good to excellent yields.  相似文献

The effects of genotype and growing environment on the tocopherols and fatty acids (FA) of experimental Brassica juncea and B. napus breeding lines were investigated. For both species, with the exception of a few genotypes, the concentration ratio of γ-tocopherols to α-tocopherol was practically constant. The genotype influenced the tocopherol concentration in B. napus, and to a lesser degree, B. juncea. The environment also had a similar effect, and a positive correlation existed between the daily maximum temperature and the α-tocopherol concentration in B. napus. Genotype effects on the FA composition were significant for the conventional but not for Clearfield or triazine tolerant traits of B. napus. The genotype had no effect on the FA of the B. juncea genotypes. In contrast, the growing environment had a significant influence on the FA composition of both species with apparent influence from temperature and rainfall. For both species, the concentration of γ-tocopherol as well as total tocopherols was inversely related to the 18:3 concentration, which could have resulted from opposite and independent effects of temperature on the two variables. No relationship existed between the concentrations of tocopherol and the remaining unsaturated FA 18:1 and 18:2. The positional distribution of unsaturated FA within the oil triacylglycerol was a function of their total concentration.  相似文献

Controlling the amount of retained austenite is a concern in austempered ductile iron formation. Retained austenite has a strong influence on austempered ductile iron properties, such as hardness and wear resistance. In this research, the characteristics of the transformation of retained austenite were investigated as a function of the number of tempering cycles. The hardness of the austempered ductile iron samples was measured, and the specific amount of retained austenite was analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Wear tests were conducted on a ball-on-flat sliding fixture. The tempering process was found to have no effect on the hardness of the austempered ductile iron samples. This may be due to retained austenite being partially converted into brittle quenched martensite during the tempering process. However, tougher tempered martensite was also formed from existing martensite. The two effects seemed to offset each other, and no significant differences occurred in overall hardness. XRD analysis showed that under the same austempering temperature and holding time, the amount of retained austenite decreased with additional tempering cycles. Also, with the same holding time and tempering cycles, less retained austenite was contained in the matrix at higher austempering temperatures. This was due to more high carbon content austenite and needle-like ferrite being present in the austempered ductile iron matrix. In addition, tempered austempered ductile iron exhibited significantly higher wear resistance as compared to traditionally treated ductile iron.  相似文献

We present a generalized exposure assessment of 28 disposal options for poultry carcasses in the event of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak. The analysis supports a hereto unverified disposal hierarchy for animal carcasses, placing waste processing (e.g., incineration and rendering) above controlled disposal (e.g., landfill), above uncontrolled disposal (e.g., burial on-farm). We illustrate that early stages of the disposal chain (on-farm) pose greater opportunities for exposure to hazardous agents than later stages, where agents are generally contained, wastes are treated, and residues are managed by regulated processes. In selecting carcass disposal options, practitioners are advised to consider the full range of hazards rather than focusing solely on the HPAI agent, and to give preference to technologies that (i) offer high destruction efficiencies for target pathogens; (ii) do not give rise to significant releases of other pathogenic organisms; and (iii) do not release unacceptable concentrations of toxic chemicals. The approach offers an exposure assessment perspective for carcass disposal, thus providing a risk-informed basis for contingency planning and operational intervention. The authors recognize that relevant legislation, public perception, available capacity, and cost also need to be considered when selecting disposal options in the event of HPAI.  相似文献

Diffusive equilibrium in thin films (DET) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) were applied in situ to obtain high spatial resolution dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) sediment porewater profiles in two lagoons of the Gippsland Lakes (SE Australia) during summer. Although the DRP depth profiles were different in each lake, highlighting the sensitivity of DRP to the redox state of the sediment spatial DRP variations obtained from DET and DGT showed striking similarities with depth in each lake. Comparison of DRP concentrations obtained from DGT and DET allows an assessment of the reactivity of the sediment. A dynamic numerical model of DGT-induced flux in sediments (DIFS) quantified reactivity kinetics. Sediment response time (Tc) related to sedimentary phosphorus resupply resulting from DGT-induced lowering of the porewater DRP concentration was calculated. Values of Tc ranged from 4128 to 183 400 s and from 55 to 149 400 s for Lakes Victoria and Wellington, respectively. These results indicate the limited capacity of the sediment to quickly resupply DRP to the porewater, especially in surface sediment which was always characterized by the highest Tc. Adsorption and desorption rate constants were also calculated from DIFS with values ranging from 2 x 10(-3) to 2 x 10(-2) day(-1) and from 0.3 to 21 day(-1) for Lake Victoria and from 2 x 10(-4) to 0.8 day(-1) and from 0.6 to 1558 day(-1) for Lake Wellington, respectively. Diffusive fluxes estimated from the in situ DRP gradient at the sediment-water interface by DET were 558 and 1.2 micromol m(-2) day(-1) in lakes Victoria and Wellington, respectively. Despite only a single measurement, these fluxes highlight a substantial contribution of P from the sediment to the water column in summer for Lake Victoria which is likely to contribute to the recurring blooms of blue-green algae. These calculated fluxes obtained with minimal sediment disturbance and high spatial resolution were substantially different (by a factor of 6-180) from other reported values using more conventional quantitative assessments such as diffusive fluxes (from core slicing) and benthic chambers.  相似文献

The NIEHS funds several basic and applied research programs, many of which also require research translation or outreach. This paper reports on a project by the Brown University Superfund Basic Research Program (SBRP), in which outreach and research translation teams collaborated with state regulatory agency personnel and community activists on a legislative initiative to mitigate the financial impacts of living in a contaminated community. The Environmentally Compromised Home Ownership (ECHO) program makes home equity loans of up to $25,000 available to qualified applicants. This collaboration provides a case study in community engagement and demonstrates how research translation and outreach activities that are clearly differentiated yet well-integrated can improve a suite of basic and applied research. Although engaging diverse constituencies can be difficult community-engaged translation and outreach have the potential to make research findings more useful to communities, address some of the social impacts of contamination, and empower stakeholders to pursue their individual and collectively held goals for remediation. The NIEHS has recently renewed its commitment to community-engaged research and advocacy, making this an optimal time to reflect on how basic research programs that engage stakeholders through research translation and outreach can add value to the overall research enterprise.  相似文献

The California Energy Commission has recognized evaporative cooling space conditioning as a key demand-side “Opportunity Technology,” which offers compelling energy, economic development and environmental benefits to the state. In 1993, the Commission lead an effort to form an industry Collaborative of Stakeholders whose primary focus was to improve market penetration through the identification and elimination of the key barriers to technology deployment. More recently, the Commission has supported this objective through the funding of a statewide market assessment of evaporative cooling in the residential and commercial market segments with Regional Economic Research, Inc. of San Diego, California under Contract No. 500-93-027. Summary data and results from this work are presented in this paper.Baseline forecasts of market shares and the associated energy impacts within the residential and commercial market segments, including new construction and existing facilities, were then developed for each statewide planning area and utility climate zone in California. Thereafter, forecasts of the sensitivity of market shares and energy impacts to changes in key drivers (e. g., awareness, technology costs, and select non-economic drivers) were generated to establish the relative importance of each of the technology market drivers. Finally, Achievable Potential was estimated in the form of market shares and associated energy savings, based upon assumptions with respect to the achievable reductions in evaporative cooling deployment barriers.  相似文献

The concept of affordance is relatively easy to define, but has proved to be remarkably difficult to engineer. This paradox has sparked numerous debates as to its true nature. The discussion presented here begins with a review of the use of the term from which emerges evidence for a two-fold classification—simple affordance and complex affordance. Simple affordance corresponds to Gibson's original formulation, while complex affordances embody such things as history and practice. In trying to account for complex affordance, two contrasting, but complementary philosophical treatments are considered. The first of these is Ilyenkov's account of significances which he claims are ‘ideal’ phenomena. Ideal phenomena occupy are objective characteristics of things and are the product of human purposive activity. This makes them objective, but not independent (of any particular mind or perception) hence their similarity to affordances.

The second perspective is Heidegger's phenomenological treatment of ‘familiarity’ and ‘equipment’. As will be seen, Heidegger has argued that familiarity underpins our ability to cope in the world. A world, in turn, which itself comprises the totality of equipment. We cope by making use of equipment. Despite the different philosophical traditions both Ilyenkov and Heidegger have independently concluded that a thing is identified by its use and that use, in turn, is revealed by way of its affordances/significances. Finally, both authors—Heidegger directly and Ilyenkov indirectly—equate context and use, leading to the conclusion that affordance and context are one and the same.  相似文献

Abstract— The De Montfort University (DMU) autostereoscopic 3‐D display, intended for television applications, is described. It provides freedom of viewer movement over a typical “living room” sized area, with no restrictions on viewer's head positions. The display is capable of supplying 3‐D images to multiple viewers who do not need to wear special glasses. It operates by producing regions (exit pupils) in the viewing field where either a left or a right image is perceived. The positions of the exit pupils are steered to the viewers' eyes by the use of head tracking. Design issues that became apparent during the construction of a first prototype, and the findings from tests on it, are described. In addition, the current status of a more advanced prototype is reported.  相似文献
