Biophysical feedbacks between vegetation and sediment are important for forming and modifying landscape features and their ecosystem services. These feedbacks are especially important where landscape features differ in their provision of ecosystem services. For example, the shape of coastal foredunes, a product of both physical and biological forces, determines their ability to protect communities from rising seas and changing patterns of storminess. Here we assessed how sand supply and changes in vegetation over interannual (3 year) and decadal (21 year) scales influenced foredune shape along 100 km of coastline in the US Pacific Northwest. Across 21 years, vegetation switched from one congeneric non-native beachgrass to another (Ammophila arenaria to A. breviligulata) while sand supply rates were positive. At interannual timescales, sand supply rates explained the majority of change in foredune height (64–69%) and width (56–80%). However, at decadal scales, change in vegetation explained the majority of the change in foredune width (62–68%), whereas sand supply rates explained most of the change in foredune height (88–90%). In areas with lower shoreline change rates (±2 m yr−1), the change in vegetation explained the majority of decadal changes in foredune width (56–57%) and height (59–76%). Foredune shape directly impacts coastal protection, thus our findings are pertinent to coastal management given pressures of development and climate change.  相似文献

This study, an expansion of an earlier study of parenting behaviors of anxious mothers, examined the relationship of both mother and child anxiety disorders to mother behavior in parent-child interactions. Participants were 68 mother-child dyads with children ranging in age from 7 to 15 years. Facial expression and emotional stimuli were varied orthogonally in a 3?×?4 factorial design to test whether facial expression is necessary or sufficient to influence emotional experience. 123 undergraduates watched a film eliciting fear, sadness, or no emotion while holding their facial muscles in the position characteristic of fear or sadness or in an effortful but nonemotional grimace; those in a 4th group received no facial instructions. The Ss believed that the study concerned subliminal perception and that the facial positions were necessary to prevent physiological recording artifacts. The films had powerful effects on reported emotions, the facial expressions none. Correlations between facial expression and reported emotion were zero. Sad and fearful Ss showed distinctive patterns of physiological arousal. Facial expression also tended to affect physiological responses in a manner consistent with an effort hypothesis. Inhomogeneous heating by photothermal therapy (PTT) during cancer treatment often results in the recurrence of tumors. Thus, integrating PTT with chemotherapy (CHT) may provide a complementary treatment for enhanced therapeutic efficiency. Herein, this study develops a hollow structured polymer–silica nanohybrid (HPSN) as a nanocarrier to simultaneously deliver the anticancer drug paclitaxel and photothermal agent palladium phthalocyanine to tumors through enhanced permeation and the retention effect. A combinational CHT/PTT therapy on mice bearing aggressive tumor grafts is conducted. The highly malignant tumor model, which recurs after sole treatment of PTT, can be eradicated by the combined CHT/PTT treatment. In addition, most of the off‐targeted HPSN nanocarriers can be excreted through a hepatobiliary pathway in about 10 d. Serology results show that the fast‐clearable HPSN can significantly reduce the side effect of the loaded paclitaxel drug. The present work provides an alternative approach for combinational cancer treatment with high therapeutic efficiency.  相似文献

It has been suggested that despite explicit recognition difficulties, implicit processing of facial expressions may be preserved in older adulthood. To directly test this possibility, the authors used facial electromyography to assess older (N = 40) and young (N = 46) adults’ mimicry responses to angry and happy facial expressions, which were presented subliminally via a backward masking technique. The results indicated that despite not consciously perceiving the facial emotion stimuli, both groups mimicked the angry and happy facial expressions.
