Personality correlates of social conformity.

A group of 89 female social welfare case workers were administered the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey and a social conformity scale developed by the author. The latter comprised 37 items utilizing the direction of perception technique of attitude measurement. For the selected sample, the relationship between the two scales appeared to be limited to a correlation of -.47 between the social conformity scale and the Objectivity scale of the GZ. More on forced-choice test fakability.

This study was made to determine if Gordon's Survey of Interpersonal Values might be subject to faking in a selection situation. A group of 50 College Extension Division students took the test first under a job set and then later under a vocational guidance set. The results from a correlational analysis, and an examination of individual score changes led to the following conclusions: (a) The test author's contention that this type of test (forced-choice format) is minimally susceptible to faking is open to some question in the case of the Survey of Interpersonal Values, (b) In this sample, 19% of the Ss changed their scores to a considerable extent under the 2 different administrative sets. Theory of situational, instrument, second order, and refraction factors in personality structure research.

The determination of personality structure by multivariate experimental methods has led to stable, meaningful results as well as to confusing inconsistencies. Becker (see 35: 6414) has recently criticized the foregoing theoretical position. The present paper presents additional data and further arguments related to the over-all problem. Experimental study of Gas—liquid transfer rates using an inclined perforated tray without downcomer

Gas—liquid interfacial area, liquid phase and gas phase mass transfer coefficients are measured for an inclined perforated plate without downcomer. The influence of geometric and hydrodynamic parameters is investigated experimentally.The existence of optimal geometries and hydrodynamic conditions which yield maximal mass transfer rates is shown. A techno—economic study is carried out which compares usual equipment with the present technique. Possible applications are suggested.     

The Group Incidents Questionnaire: A measure of skill in group facilitation.

Describes the development and validation of an instrument designed to measure the ability to identify and respond to issues in an ongoing group. Data are presented from 161 undergraduates, 22 paraprofessional counselor trainees, and 48 professional group leaders. Possible uses of the instrument include evaluating training programs, assessing the competence of group leaders, and selecting paraprofessionals to be trained as group facilitators. Trois phases du ternaire CuTlS

Ternary compounds CuTlS₂, CuTlS and Cu₂Tl_0,5S₂ have been prepared and caracterized by their crystallographic parameters. Meanwhile the first one is semiconductor, the other two have a metallic behaviour between 77°K and 300°K.     

Young adult schizophrenics: Prediction of outcome and antecedent childhood factors.

Followed a young adult sample of 45 male acute schizophrenics through record sources into middle age. Antecedent childhood information was also obtained. Thus, information was available for all Ss at the following 3 mean age levels: 10.9 yrs, 21.7 yrs, and 43.7 yrs. Three aspects of schizophrenia (psychotic thinking, affectivity, and social competence) were assessed in terms of long-term stability and prediction of outcome criteria. Measures of psychotic thinking were found to lack both stability and predictive validity. In contrast, a combined measure of affectivity and social competence was stable over time and was significantly related to eventual outcome. Childhood factors were also related to adult outcome variables. Implications for research definitions of schizophrenia are discussed. On differential validity and bias.

Responds to J. E. Hunter and F. L. Schmidt's criticism (see record 1979-22562-001) that the present authors underestimated Type I bias and overestimated Type II bias in their analysis of studies of ethnic differences in employment test validity (see record 1978-02212-001). An autoradiographic technique for the location of conditioning water in wheat at the cellular level

A technique was devised whereby sections of wheat grains, conditioned with tritiated water, were used to produce an autoradiographic pattern of the distribution of this water. This enabled a more precise location of the conditioning water to be made than could be achieved using halves of labelled wheat grains. Within 1 h the labelled water had penetrated into the aleurone cells, and in many cases, into the starchy endosperm to a depth of 50–60 μm. The embryo and scutellum also absorbed the water with great rapidity. Subsequent penetration into the starchy endosperm was delayed for several hours. No morphological changes were observed that could account for the release of water by the aleurone cells. The cells of the embryo and scutellum appeared to bind the water more strongly than those of the aleurone and after 48 h lying time were still more heavily labelled than the other components of the wheat grain.     

An investigation of oxygen transfer rates to flowing films of various electrolyte solutions

In this work the mass transfer coefficient for the absorption of oxygen was measured for solutions of K₂SO₄, (NH₄)₂SO₄, Na₂SO₄, MgSO₄, MnSO₄, Al₂(SO₄)₃, NaCl, AlC1₃ under conditions of nearly horizontal, thin, essentially laminar, flowing films. The results showed a systematically ordered dependence of the mass transfer coefficient on the hydration where the values of the mass transfer coefficient decrease with the decreasing entropy. This effect becomes progressively more pronounced with increasing charge of the cations. Finally, although the entropy of hydration has a strong influence on the changes in the coefficient, it does not have a common linear relationship for the investigated ions.
