Healing the psyche through music, myth, and ritual.

According to Carl Jung, a person's symptoms occur as a result of the psyche's creative attempt to self-regulate. These symptoms are viewed as the symbol-making function of the psyche. Music therapy as a therapeutic tool is also viewed as having a symbol-making function in that the physical act of making music involves conceptualizing one's symptoms into sounds. The sound serves as a musical symbol of the symptom. The myth of Orpheus is offered as an example of how early man amplified the creative potential contained in music to heal from life's woes. The Orphic archetype illustrates that music serves as a medium for healing and as an expression of Self. That psyche can be healed by music is a reminder of the connection between music therapy and the myth of Orpheus. In using the therapeutic tool of music one can transcend, through the symbol making process inherent in music therapy, the tension of opposites that are created at the crossroads of disease and wellness. Materials technology for aerospace applications

Modern helicopter design depends on the successful combination of materials to fulfil a very wide range of critical functions. In the past few years demands from the aerospace industry have caused considerable enhancement in the favourable properties of both polymer based materials and metals. These are discussed in connection with the progressive technical evolution of helicopters and other advanced technological products from the Westland Group.     

Hydrogen Permeation and Diffusion in Amorphous Alloy Ni_(68)Cr7_Si_8B_(14)Fe_3 at Elevated Temperature

The behaviour of hydrogen permeation and diffusion in amorphous alloy Ni68Cr7Si8B14Fe3 hasbeen investigated by an ultrahigh vacuum gas permeation technique. A comparison experimentwas carried out between the as-quenched and annealed States (400℃/2h) of the amorphousalloy. The results show that, for both states of the amorphous alloy in the temperature rangeof 200～350℃, the diffusivity and permeability of hydrogen are in agreement with Arrheniusrelationship, there does not exist H-trapping effect, and the activation energies of diffusion andpermeation almost keep the same.     

Determination and interpretation of fractal properties of the sandstone pore system

A knowledge of fractal properties of the pore system is extremely useful with regard to the interrelationships between moisture transport and pore structure. The fractal dimension characterises the egree of resolutiondependence of a property. Given a completely interlaced pore system such as that of sandstone, the fractal dimension of the pore volume, or the porosity, quantifies the cross-sectional variability of the pore channels and is thus of great relevance with regard to transport processes. The fractal dimension of the pore surface describes the surface roughness. A newly-developed measuing technique is presented for the simultaneous determination of fractal dimensions of porosity and pore surface and for establishing fraction radii distributions in order to derive relevant parameters for moisture transport.     

Determination of the width of the transition layer between the crystalline and amorphous zones in nylon 1010 by SAXS

The width of the transition layer between the crystalline and amorphous zones in nylon 1010 was determined by SAXS with point collimation and long-slit collimation, respectively. The width of the transition layer, E, was found to be 1.7 nm. The results show that the width of the transition layer is independent of crystallinity.
