Doctors read literature to keep abreast of medical advances. A recommendation from the 1993 World Summit for Medical Education is that medical schools should teach medical students to critically appraise scientific reports. The Department of Community Health Sciences of Aga Khan University Medical College teaches basic research methods to medical students. This is now supplemented with "Critical Reading". Critical reading was first taught to 67 third year students between October, 1993 and May, 1994. A "validity check-list for critical readers" was introduced in a two week orientation consisting of three one-hour classroom sessions and four one-hour small group sessions. Thereafter, small groups met monthly to critique clinical epidemiological reports relevant to current organ system teaching. The students reading attitudes and critical appraisal skills were assessed through continuous assessment and a written final examination with questionnaire. All but three students passed the final examination (mean score (74%, standard deviation 12%). Sixty-four of 67 (96%) completed questionnaires. All (73% strongly) agreed that critical reading skills were essential, but only 30% strongly agreed that they had, indeed, mastered the skills. Ninety-seven percent (56% strongly) disagreed that year three was too early to start critical reading. Clinical teaching staff expressed interest in learning these skills. Students benefited from and enjoyed this first critical reading course. It strengthened ties between clinical and community health sciences teaching staff. The critical reading skills of the clinical teaching staff is being addressed in seminars to strengthen institutional research capacity.  相似文献

Abstract— The current status of AC powder electroluminescent (ACPEL) displays is reviewed with particular emphasis given to color and lifetime. The printing of the displays in forward and reverse architectures is also discussed, in addition to the fabrication of ACPEL displays with interdigitated electrodes, and different types of ACPEL phosphors and materials for back electrodes, transparent conducting electrodes, binders, and dielectrics are considered. Furthermore, shape conformable and highly flexible ACPEL displays are surveyed.  相似文献

The University of Sussex In-School Teacher Education Project (InSTEP) uses interactive video technologies to enhance initial teacher education programmes for science trainee teachers. With four Internet Protocol cameras and mounted microphones in both school laboratories and the university teaching room, trainees and their tutors have access to live interaction with schools. This paper presents some of the findings of a 2 year evaluation of InSTEP aimed at identifying the benefits for trainee teachers. There has been an increase in the use of video material for teacher training purposes, however, trainee teachers are often intimidated by carefully selected extracts featuring experienced teachers. InSTEP activities are live and capitalise on all the opportunities associated with normal classroom practice. Literature points to InSTEP-type activities having the potential to enhance the development of trainees’ observation skills, develop reflective thinking, to provide authentic illustrations of classroom practice, enable remote observation and facilitate the coaching of trainees by mentors. A fourth generation model of evaluation was undertaken with data generated by semi-structured interviews with university tutors and mentors supported by a questionnaire and group interviews with the trainees. Our main findings point to InSTEP enhancing and accelerating the growth of trainee teachers’ professional knowledge through enabling reflective practice, facilitating collaborative learning and supporting the development of the language of pedagogy.  相似文献

A new three-phase electrode array with a serpentine electrode is designed and prototyped using PolyMUMPs process for micro flow pumping. Numerical model of the micropump has been developed using COMSOL Multiphysics™. Experimental testing is conducted and time-averaged flow velocities from testing and simulation agree well. Peak time-averaged flow velocity of 270 μm/s is achieved at 30 Hz using ethanol.  相似文献

Understanding the diversity of a set of multivariate objects is an important problem in many domains, including ecology, college admissions, investing, machine learning, and others. However, to date, very little work has been done to help users achieve this kind of understanding. Visual representation is especially appealing for this task because it offers the potential to allow users to efficiently observe the objects of interest in a direct and holistic way. Thus, in this paper, we attempt to formalize the problem of visualizing the diversity of a large (more than 1000 objects), multivariate (more than 5 attributes) data set as one worth deeper investigation by the information visualization community. In doing so, we contribute a precise definition of diversity, a set of requirements for diversity visualizations based on this definition, and a formal user study design intended to evaluate the capacity of a visual representation for communicating diversity information. Our primary contribution, however, is a visual representation, called the Diversity Map, for visualizing diversity. An evaluation of the Diversity Map using our study design shows that users can judge elements of diversity consistently and as or more accurately than when using the only other representation specifically designed to visualize diversity.  相似文献

Using virtual reality (VR) to examine risky behavior that is mediated by interpersonal contact, such as agreeing to have sex, drink, or smoke with someone, offers particular promise and challenges. Social contextual stimuli that might trigger impulsive responses can be carefully controlled in virtual environments (VE), and yet manipulations of risk might be implausible to participants if they do not feel sufficiently immersed in the environment. The current study examined whether individuals can display adequate evidence of presence in a VE that involved potential interpersonally-induced risk: meeting a potential dating partner. Results offered some evidence for the potential of VR for the study of such interpersonal risk situations. Participants’ reaction to the scenario and risk-associated responses to the situation suggested that the embodied nature of virtual reality override the reality of the risk’s impossibility, allowing participants to experience adequate situational embedding, or presence.  相似文献

This paper presents a new version of fuzzy wavelet support vector classifier machine to diagnosing the nonlinear fuzzy fault system with multi-dimensional input variables. Since there exist problems of finite samples and uncertain data in complex fuzzy fault system, the input and output variables are described as fuzzy numbers. Then by integrating the fuzzy theory, wavelet analysis theory and v-support vector classifier machine, fuzzy wavelet v-support vector classifier machine (FWv-SVCM) is proposed. To seek the optimal parameters of FWv-SVCM, genetic algorithm (GA) is also applied to optimize unknown parameters of FWv-SVCM. A diagnosing method based on FWv-SVCM and GA is put forward. The results of the application in car assembly line diagnosis confirm the feasibility and the validity of the diagnosing method. Compared with the traditional model and other SVCM methods, FWv-SVCM method requires fewer samples and has better diagnosing precision.  相似文献

Online bin stretching is a semi-online variant of bin packing in which the algorithm has to use the same number of bins as an optimal packing, but is allowed to slightly overpack the bins. The goal is to minimize the amount of overpacking, i.e., the maximum size packed into any bin. We give an algorithm for online bin stretching with a stretching factor of \(11/8 = 1.375\) for three bins. Additionally, we present a lower bound of \(45/33 = 1.\overline{36}\) for online bin stretching on three bins and a lower bound of 19/14 for four and five bins that were discovered using a computer search.  相似文献

A well-known problem in Petri net theory is to formalise an appropriate causality-based concept of process or run for place/transition systems. The so-called individual token interpretation, where tokens are distinguished according to their causal history, giving rise to the processes of Goltz and Reisig, is often considered too detailed. The problem of defining a fully satisfying more abstract concept of process for general place/transition systems has so-far not been solved. In this paper, we recall the proposal of defining an abstract notion of process, here called BD-process, in terms of equivalence classes of Goltz-Reisig processes, using an equivalence proposed by Best and Devillers. It yields a fully satisfying solution for at least all one-safe nets. However, for certain nets which intuitively have different conflicting behaviours, it yields only one maximal abstract process. Here we identify a class of place/transition systems, called structural conflict nets, where conflict and concurrency due to token multiplicity are clearly separated. We show that, in the case of structural conflict nets, the equivalence proposed by Best and Devillers yields a unique maximal abstract process only for conflict-free nets. Thereby BD-processes constitute a simple and fully satisfying solution in the class of structural conflict nets.  相似文献
