The quality and value of fresh mushrooms are often diminished by the presence of high bacterial populations that cause a brown, blotchy appearance. The objective of the present research was to evaluate the addition of hydrogen peroxide and/or calcium chloride to irrigation water as a means to reduce total bacterial populations on fresh mushrooms. Crops were grown using commercial mushroom growing practices except for the addition of 0.75% hydrogen peroxide and/or 0.3% calcium chloride irrigation water added to the crop starting 11 d after the casing layer was applied on top of mushroom compost. Irrigation water without the added treatments acted as the control. Mushrooms were aseptically sampled from the production beds for enumerating bacterial counts. Total aerobic bacterial populations were determined by standard microbiological plating procedures. Mushroom whiteness (L‐value) and color (delta E) after harvest and postharvest storage were measured using a Minolta chromameter. Harvested mushrooms were separated by treatment and weighed to record yield. Mushrooms irrigated with water (control) had 7.3 log colony‐forming units (CFU) of aerobic bacterial populations per gram of fresh mushroom tissue. Compared with the control, irrigation with 0.75% hydrogen peroxide and 0.3% calcium chloride reduced the bacterial populations on fresh mushrooms by 87% (6.4 log CFU/g). Irrigation with hydrogen peroxide and calcium chloride significantly enhanced mushroom whiteness after harvest as well as after 6 d of postharvest storage at 12 °C. The irrigation treatments did not have a significant effect on crop yields; hence, the addition of hydrogen peroxide and calcium chloride to irrigation water was demonstrated to have good potential as a practical strategy to reduce bacterial populations and to improve the quality of fresh mushrooms. 相似文献

Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen that causes gastrointestinal disorders, and, especially in immunocompromised people, serious extraintestinal diseases, such as septicemia and meningitis, as well as abortion in pregnant women. Many foods, from both plant and animal origin, have been involved in listeriosis outbreaks. This article reports the results of a 12-year survey (1993 through 2004) on the presence of L. monocytogenes in several kinds of food marketed in Italy. Of 5,788 analyzed samples, 121 (2.1%) were contaminated with L. monocytogenes. The highest prevalence was found in smoked salmon (10.6%) and in poultry meat samples (8.5%) and the lowest in red meat (0.3%). L. monocytogenes was not found in 154 samples of fresh seafood products. Fifty-two isolates were also serotyped by the agglutination method. The most common serotypes detected in the 52 strains tested were 1/2a (36.5%), followed by 1/2c (32.8%), 1/2b (13.5%), 4b (11.5%), 3a (3.8%), and 3b (1.9%). The results of the present study showed low levels of L. monocytogenes in the analyzed samples. A total of 61.5% of the 52 L. monocytogenes strains analyzed belonged to serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b, and 4b, namely the serovars that are most commonly involved in extraintestinal human listeriosis outbreaks. In the ready-to-eat samples, these three serotypes were 40.0% (1/2a), 17.1% (1/2b), and 14.3% (4b). This finding highlights the need to implement strict hygienic measures during the production, distribution, and sale of foods to reduce the risk of foodborne listeriosis in humans to an acceptable level. 相似文献

In Trinidad and Tobago, raw oyster cocktails are a delicacy, but they are generally believed to be responsible for illness in the consumer. The microbial loads of raw oysters, condiments/spices and ready-to-consume oyster cocktails were determined in four sampling areas. Questionnaires were also administered to 72 oyster vendors to determine practices that affect the bacteriological quality of the products. Three hundred members of the public were interviewed to determine the attitudes, knowledge and perceptions of the public about raw oyster consumption. The mean total aerobic plate count (TAPC) per g of 50 samples each, of raw oysters, condiments/spices and ready-to-consume raw oyster cocktails averaged from 1.0 x 10(7)+/-4.3 x 10(7) to 1.4 x 10(8)+/-6.4 x 10(8), 2.0 x 10(5)+/-1.0 x 10(6) to 2.0 x 10(7)+/-1.4 x 10(8), and 4.3 x 10(5)+/-1.0 x 10(6) to 2.2 x 10(6)+/-1.0 x 10(7), respectively. The difference for each product among the four areas was statistically significant (P < or = 0.05; chi2). Using a recommended maximum standard of TAPC per g of 5.0 x 10(5), 115 (57.5%), 27 (13.5%) and 51 (25.5%) of 200 samples each, of raw oysters, condiments/spices and oyster cocktails, respectively, were considered unfit for human consumption. Amongst vendor practices, source of oyster harvest and length of time between separation of oyster meat from shell and sale, significantly affected the mean TAPC per g and the prevalence of unfit oyster cocktail samples. Consumption of raw oyster cocktails was more prevalent amongst males (73.6%) than females (26.4%) (P < 0.002), East Indians (63.2%) as compared with other respondents (36.8%) (P < 0.001), individuals < or = 40 years old (82.1%) than in individuals > 40 years of age (17.9%) (P < 0.01), and in individuals who were aware that raw oysters are considered to be a sexual enhancer (86.8%) as compared to those who did not have this perception (11.3%) (P < 0.03). Fear of falling ill prevented 44 (37.9%) of 116 non-consumers from eating oyster cocktails, while 13 of 106 consumers (12.3%) reported having experienced an oyster-borne illness. The rather high prevalence of raw oyster cocktails found to be unfit for human consumption, coupled with the perceptions and attitudes of the consumers about the product, pose a significant health risk to the public. 相似文献

Summary: The rheological behavior of polyethylenes is mainly dominated by the molecular weight, the molecular weight distribution and by the type, the amount and the distribution of the chain branches. In this work a linear metallocene catalyzed polyethylene (m‐PE), a branched metallocene catalyzed polyethylene (m‐bPE), a conventional linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and a low density polyethylene (LDPE) have been investigated in order to compare their rheological behavior in shear and in elongational flow. The four samples have similar melt flow index and in particular a value typical of film blowing grade. The melt viscosity has been studied both in shear and in isothermal and non‐isothermal elongational flow. The most important features of the results are that in shear flow the m‐PE sample shows less pronounced non Newtonian behavior while in the elongational flow the behavior of m‐PE is very similar to that of the linear low density polyethylene: the narrower molecular weight distribution and the better homogeneity of the branching distribution are reasonably responsible for this behavior. Of course the most pronounced non‐linear behavior is shown, as expected, by the LDPE sample and by the branched metallocene sample. This similar behavior has to be attributed to the presence of branching. Similar comments hold in non‐isothermal elongational flow; the LDPE sample shows the highest values of the melt strength and the other two samples show very similar values. As for the breaking stretching ratio the opposite is true for LDPE while m‐PE and LLDPE show higher values. The transient isothermal elongational viscosity curves show that the branched samples show a strain hardening effect, while LLDPE and m‐PE samples present a linear behavior.

The hydrodynamic behaviour and mass transfer of carbon dioxide removal process by aqueous solutions of triethanolamine (TEA) are analysed. The experiments were made in a bubble column reactor (BCR) as gas–liquid contactor. The effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WTTP) discharged into the rivers considerably affect the biogeochemical functioning of the system. In this paper, we characterize both raw and treated domestic wastewater from two WTTPs of Parisian agglomeration using different process treatments (Achères WWTP with a secondary treatment and Colombes WWTP with a tertiary one). In addition to the classical variables, we analyse the input of bacteria, both the heterotrophs and the nitrifyers. Tertiary treatment leads to significantly decrease ammonium-specific load (< 2 g KjN inhab equ.(-1) instead of 9 g KjN inhab equ.(-1) for secondary treatment) and notably reduces the one of organic matter (approximately 2.5 g biological oxygen demand (BOD) inhab equ.(-1) instead of approximately 7.5 g BOD inhab equ.(-1) for secondary treatment); it is therefore promising to improve oxygen status of both the Seine river and its estuary. In terms of total bacterial biomass abatement (the heterotrophs mostly), bioreactors (at Colombes WWTP) eliminate 12% more bacterial biomass than the activated sludge treatment (at Achères WWTP). Regarding the nitrifying bacteria, a tertiary treatment in bioreactors eliminates reverse similar 90% of both nitrifying bacteria and nitrogen pollution of wastewater. Bacterial populations are characterized by large size bacteria (> 1 microm) with a higher growth rate, that represent in the treatment plant effluents 70% of the biomass. These large size bacteria have therefore a strong impact in the organic matter degradation and oxygen consumption. Relationships between classical physical-chemical variables routinely analysed in WWTPs laboratory and bacterial biomass (heterotrophic and nitrifying) are established, in order to quantify the ecological role of the allochthonous bacteria brought into the river system. In addition, domestic specific loads are calculated for both raw and treated effluents of the two types of WWTPs. As the application of the European Water Directive requires to upgrade the wastewater treatment at Achères WWTP as soon as 2007 for 90% nitrification and 30% denitrification and in 2015 for further denitrification (up to 70%), the results of this study can be taken as point-source constraints into the modelling approach already developed for the Seine basin, and chosen to test the implementation of the Water Frame Directive. 相似文献

The ALTEA-Space detector has been calibrated by testing its response to several monochromatic beams. These measurements provided energy-deposition spectra in silicon of 100, 600 and 1000 MeV/nucleon 12C and 200 and 600 MeV/nucleon 48Ti. The results have been compared to three Monte Carlo transport codes, namely PHITS, GEANT4 and FLUKA. Median, full width at half maximum (FWHM) and interquartile range (IQR) have been calculated for all datasets to characterize location, width and asymmetry of the energy-deposition spectra. Particular attention has been devoted to the influence of δ rays on the shape of the energy-deposition spectrum, both with the help of analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The two approaches proved that, in this range of projectile charge, projectile energy and detector size, the leakage of secondary electrons might introduce a difference between the energy-loss and energy-deposition spectrum, in particular by changing the location, width and symmetry of the distribution. The overall agreement between the Monte Carlo predictions and the measurements is fair and makes PHITS, FLUKA and GEANT4 all possible candidates for simulating ALTEA-Space experiment. 相似文献
