Local Kernel Regression Score for Selecting Features of High-Dimensional Data

In general, irrelevant features of high-dimensional data will degrade the performance of an inference system, e.g., a clustering algorithm or a classifier. In this paper, we therefore present a Local Kernel Regression (LKR) scoring approach to evaluate the relevancy of features based on their capabilities of keeping the local configuration in a small patch of data. Accordingly, a score index featuring applicability to both of supervised learning and unsupervised learning is developed to identify the relevant features within the framework of local kernel regression. Experimental results show the efficacy of the proposed approach in comparison with the existing methods.     

An evolutionary transport structure for local loop distributionusing RF subcarriers

An evolutionary transport structure for local loop distribution based on RF subcarrier multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing is discussed. Issues relating to technology and cost are discussed. The transport structure provides private, high-bit-rate, premium services to business sites, and broadcast, low-bit-rate, low-cost services to residential users. The structure is transparent to various protocols or modulation schemes and can be configured to suit different needs. Up to 60 analog FM broadcast video channels downstream and 4 analog FM video channels upstream (or a single 155-Mb/s broadband ISDN channel) per subscriber can be provided for 16 subscribers per fiber feeder. It is possible that the transport structure could be deployed affordably in the near future. Future upgrades and expansions are possible because the transport structure is compatible with most promising future technologies. Various tradeoffs are also discussed     

A generalized computer-aided formulation for the dynamic and steadystate analysis of induction machine inverter drive systems

A generalized formulation for the computer-aided analysis of induction machine drives including feedback controls is presented. A simple circuit model for the induction machine is developed to enhance the conventional drive formulation. This model eliminates a general difficulty encountered in the automatic formulation of machine dq -terminal constraints imposed by the drive operations. An efficient algorithm is proposed using a simple nodal approach for automatic formulation of power electronic circuits. This algorithm, combined with the proposed machine circuit model, can easily be used to simulate an arbitrarily configured drive system including the effects of control dynamics. A pulse-width-modulated current-source-inverter drive system is employed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed formulation. The dynamic and steady-state performance of this drive system including an effective harmonic control are simulated. The simulated results are experimentally verified     

Omental transposition flap for gross locally recurrent breast cancer

A randomized double-blind controlled trial was undertaken to study the efficacy of a cow udder ointment versus petroalatum alone. A total of 30 patients participated in the study. Sixteen patients completed the trial with 8 of 9 patients improving in the active group and 6 of 7 patients improving in the placebo group. This difference was not statistically significant. The use of a cow udder ointment for psoriasis cannot be supported, particularly with the potential for side effects.     

Automatic construction of online catalog topologies

A good online catalog is crucial to the success of an e-commerce web site. Traditionally, an online catalog is mainly built by hand. To what extent this can be automated is a challenging problem. Recently, there have been investigations on how to reorganize an existing online catalog based on some criteria, but none of them has addressed the problem of organizing an online catalog automatically from scratch. This paper attempts to tackle this problem. We model an online catalog organization as a decision tree structure and propose a metric, based on the popularity of products and the relative importance of product attribute values, to evaluate the quality of a catalog organization. The problem is then formulated as a decision tree construction problem. Although traditional decision tree algorithms, such as C4.5, can be used to generate online catalog organization, the catalog constructed is generally not good based on our metric. An efficient greedy algorithm (GENCAT) is thus developed, and the experimental results show that GENCAT produces better catalog organizations based on our metric.     

Schottky-biased, optically controlled coplanar waveguide phase-shifter

Phase shift measurements of a Schottky-biased, optically controlled coplanar waveguide (CPW) phase-shifter are presented. A prototype device consisting of a CPW on top of a lightly doped GaAs epilayer on a semi-insulating GaAs substrate was fabricated and tested. The highest phase shift obtained with an illuminating optical intensity of 4mW/cm/sup 2/ was 120 degrees at 40 GHz for a 1 cm-long device.<>     

Rapid detection of oilfish and escolar in fish steaks: A tool to prevent keriorrhea episodes

The outbreak of keriorrhea caused by the wax ester-rich oilfish and escolar has become a frequent and worldwide concern. To help prevent such episodes, rapid detection of these fishes in the supply chain of the seafood industry and by food and health inspection agencies is essential. Through a combination of DNA, GC–MS and TLC analyses with reference to authentic samples, fish steaks of oilfish and escolar mislabeled as other species could be accurately identified. The TLC method developed is inexpensive and provides a reliable and importantly rapid identification within 30 min.     

Finite strip method for the free vibration and buckling analysis of plates with abrupt changes in thickness and complex support conditions

The free vibration problem of a stepped plate supported on non-homogeneous Winkler elastic foundation with elastically mounted masses is formulated based on Hamilton's principle. The stepped plate is modelled by finite strip method. To overcome the problem of excessive continuity of common beam vibration functions at the location of abrupt change of plate thickness, a set of C¹ continuous functions have been chosen as the longitudinal interpolation functions in the finite strip analysis. The C¹ continuous functions are obtained by augmenting the relevant beam vibration modes with piecewise cubic polynomials. As these displacement functions are built up from beam vibration modes with appropriate corrections, they possess both the advantages of fast convergence of harmonic functions as well as the appropriate order of continuity. The method is further extended to the buckling analysis of rectangular stepped plates. Numerical results also show that the method is versatile, efficient and accurate.     

Performance study of 16-ary deqam modem for future satellite communication systems

This paper investigates the effects of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), adjacent-channel interference (ACI) and co-channel interference (CCI) combined with flat fading on the performance of bandlimited 16-ary differentially encoded quadrature amplitude modulation (16-ary DEQAM) signalling transmitted through a non-linear high-power amplifier (HPA). It is assumed that the HPA exhibits both AM-AM and AM–PM conversion distortions. This situation may be applied to the up-link or down-link of a regenerative satellite system where the HPA is the earth-station travelling-wave tube (TWT) or the on-board TWTA, respectively. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradations at a specific bit error rate (BER) are evaluated by means of a series of computer simulation tests for various values of channel roll-off factor α (channel bandwidth) and different degrees of output backoff (OBO) of the HPA in the presence of various combinations of the channel impairments. It is shown that by employing a baseband or RF predistortion technique for the HPA and selecting the best arrangement of channel roll-off factor, OBO value of the HPA and channel spacing, a good performance can be achieved regarding the most efficient use of bandwidth together with a minimum SNR degradation due to the presence of channel impairments. Thus, the use of 16-ary DEQAM for satellite communications is feasible in the near future.
