To determine whether racial differences exist in psychosocial variables among patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), the authors administered a series of questionnaires to 211 Black and White patients of the Wake Forest Family Medicine ambulatory care unit and the Reynolds Health Center, a community health center. In general, Blacks in the study population had higher levels of external locus of control, higher levels of stress, and lower levels of family functioning compared with Whites. These differences may account partially for the disparity of diabetes control and the consequences of diabetes among Blacks. Health professionals may benefit from understanding and addressing these psychosocial variables and may be more successful in implementing intervention programs in this population by tailoring programs to the psychosocial orientation of their population.  相似文献

The potential mediating roles of danger expectancies, responsibility, perfectionism, anticipated anxiety and self-efficacy on obsessive-compulsive handwashing were examined. Ratings were obtained from 27 obsessive-compulsive patients before and during a behavioural avoidance test involving a compound stimulus of potting soil, animal hair, food scraps and raw meat. Correlation and partial correlation analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between the cognitive predictor variables and anxiety, urge to wash, time in task and duration of post-test washing. Large and significant relationships between danger expectancies and the dependent measures were obtained, even when alternative mediators were held constant. No other variable remained significantly related to any of the dependent measures when severity of disease ratings were held constant. Results suggest that of the cognitive variables examined, danger expectancies are the most likely mediator of washing-related behaviour in obsessive-compulsive disorder.  相似文献

Fabrication of plastic microfluid channels by imprinting methods   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Microfluidic devices have been fabricated on poly(methyl methacrylate) substrates by two independent imprinting techniques. First-generation devices were fabricated using a small-diameter wire to create an impression in plastics softened by low-temperature heating. The resulting devices are limited to only simple linear channel designs but are readily produced at low cost. Second-generation devices with more complex microchannel arrangements were fabricated by imprinting the plastic substrates using an inverse three-dimensional image of the device micromachined on a silicon wafer. This micromachined template may be used repeatedly to generate devices reproducibly. Fluorescent analtyes were used to demonstrate reproducible electrophoretic injections. An immunoassay was also performed in an imprinted device as a demonstration of future applications.  相似文献

While little is known about their activation requirements and function, the intraepithelial T cells of the murine vagina express TCR complexes in which the antigen recognition components and the signaling components have unusual features. These vaginal T cells express an invariant V gamma 4/V delta 1 TCR and appear to be the only intraepithelial gamma delta T cells that exclusively use FcR gamma chains in their TCR complex. To further characterize the vaginal gamma delta T cells we isolated them from normal mice and from mice injected systemically with an activation-inducing dose of anti-TCR mAb. The isolated gamma delta T cells were examined by flow cytometry for their surface expression of a panel of adhesion, proteins, activation antigens and cellular interaction molecules (CD44, CD62L, CD45RB, LFA-1, CD2 and CD28). The patterns of expression observed indicate that the vaginal gamma delta T cells of normal mice show the phenotype of effector T cells. The adhesion/co-stimulatory molecules CD28 and CD2 were not detected on vaginal gamma delta T cells, an interesting finding since the absence of CD2 from other T cells has been suggested to result in anergy. However, vaginal gamma delta T cells are responsive to TCR-mediated signals since injection of normal mice with pan-anti-TCR antibody or stimulating anti-gamma delta TCR antibody resulted in an increase in cell number and increased expression of transferrin and IL-2 receptors. These results indicate that vaginal gamma delta T cells might utilize other co-stimulatory molecules, if any, in connection with TCR-induced activation and differentiation. While the physiological function of vaginal gamma delta T cells remains unknown, the expression of an invariant V gamma 4/V delta 1 TCR, their exclusive use of gamma chain homodimers in their TCR, and the absence of CD2 and CD28 co-stimulatory molecules are a novel combination of properties that suggests specialized functional properties. Although vaginal gamma delta T cells share some features in common with gamma delta T cells that reside in other epithelial tissues, such as skin and intestine, the present studies provide additional evidence that vaginal gamma delta T cells are a highly specialized and distinct T cell population.  相似文献

The most commonly reported failure mode of sliding hip screws in published literature is cut-out of the lag screw. This study investigates the resistance to failure of the femoral head, with lag screws used in two types of sliding hip screws, the gamma locking nail (Howmedica) and the dynamic hip screw (DHS) (Synthes). The investigation consisted of biomechanical tests under static loading conditions on 12 pairs of cadaveric femoral heads, to establish the failure loads due to screw cut-out for the two implant lag screws. The gamma nail appeared to reduce the tendency to cut-out in the osteoporotic bone (soft) associated with elderly patients in whom these devices are commonly used (p < 0.05). In high density bone (hard) the gamma lag screw also appeared to be stronger, because the DHS showed a tendency to bend. The larger diameter of the gamma nail lag screw resists bending and appears to reduce the risk of cut-out compared with the DHS.  相似文献

Clostridium difficile radiolabelled toxin A ([3H]-toxin A) bound to human duodenal and colonic epithelial cells isolated from endoscopic biopsies. Binding was greater at 4 degrees C than 37 degrees C, consistent with the thermal binding characteristic of toxin A to a carbohydrate moiety. At 37 degrees C colonic cells bound significantly more [3H]-toxin A than duodenal cells. The amount of [3H]-toxin A binding varied considerably between individuals. [3H]-toxin A was displaced by unlabelled toxin A by 50% for duodenal cells and 70% for colonic cells with 94.3 nM unlabelled toxin A. Low non-displacable binding was observed in some samples at 4 degrees C and 37 degrees C, suggesting that these cells came from individuals incapable of specifically binding toxin. Pre-treating cells with alpha- or beta-galactosidases to cleave terminal alpha- and beta-galactose residues reduced [3H]-toxin A binding. There was also a reduction in [3H]-toxin A binding after heat treating cells, which is suggestive of protein binding. The reduction in binding varied between individuals. The reduction of [3H]-toxin A binding, after the removal of beta-linked galactose units, implicates these as components of the receptor and adds credence to the idea that the Lewis X, Y and I antigens may be involved in toxin A binding to human intestinal epithelial cells. However, because the Lewis antigens do not possess terminal alpha-galactose units, the reduction in binding after alpha-galactosidase treatment suggests that other receptors may be involved in toxin A binding to some human intestinal cells. These data are the first demonstration of direct toxin A binding to human intestinal epithelial cells.  相似文献
