During the latter half of the 19ar 1970s there was great concern about potential conflicts over energy development proposals in the UK, most of which were expected to emerge within the framework of land use planning procedures and the associated opportunities for public participation. While there has been widespread dissatisfaction with the way in which the planning system handles energy developments, there is little consensus about the nature of the problem or about possible solutions to it. Greatly reduced energy forecasts allow a pause for reflection, but it is argued that there is no room for complacency about conflict over energy developments in future. 相似文献

Toward a comprehensive assessment of fundamental motivation: Factor structure of the Reiss Profiles.
Two instruments were developed to provide a comprehensive assessment of the strength of a person's fundamental end goals and motivational sensitivities. One instrument was a self-report inventory for adolescents and adults in general, and the other was an informant-rating scale for adolescents and adults with mental retardation and development disabilities. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and test-retest reliabilities are reported in 7 studies, with independent samples of participants from diverse geographical areas, occupations, and social groups, N?=?2,548. Each instrument was found to have a 15-factor solution, and the 2 solutions were similar to one another. Because the factors assess universal motives that are also seen in animals, a genetics-behavior-cognitive model of fundamental motivation is suggested. Hearing loss is the most common sensory disorder with ~466 million people worldwide affected, representing about 5% of the population. A substantial portion of hearing loss is genetic. Hearing loss can either be non-syndromic, if hearing loss is the only clinical manifestation, or syndromic, if the hearing loss is accompanied by a collage of other clinical manifestations. Usher syndrome is a syndromic form of genetic hearing loss that is accompanied by impaired vision associated with retinitis pigmentosa and, in many cases, vestibular dysfunction. It is the most common cause of deaf-blindness. Currently cochlear implantation or hearing aids are the only treatments for Usher-related hearing loss. However, gene therapy has shown promise in treating Usher-related retinitis pigmentosa. Here we review how the etiologies of Usher-related hearing loss make it a good candidate for gene therapy and discuss how various forms of gene therapy could be applied to Usher-related hearing loss. 相似文献

This study, which deals with the distribution of hydrocarbons in seven types of rabbit tissues, was done for the purpose of
providing information that might help shed light on the biological relevance of the hydrocarbons in mammalian metabolism.
Liver, kidneys, brain, spleen, skeletal muscle, perinephric adipose, and a sample of blood serum were collected from a single
animal for analysis of their hydrocarbon composition. The analytical methodology consisted of solvent extraction, saponification
(adipose), elution chromatography on hydrated alumina, and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Hydrocarbons were
detected in all of the tissues examined at concentrations estimated to range from 0.1 to 0.01% of the total lipid extracted.
Three quite distinct distribution modes were recognized. The bulk of the identified components consisted of normal, saturated,
nonterpenoid hydrocarbons in the C16 to C33 range. Squalene, phytene, phytadiene, and pristane were the only terpenoids detected. Nonterepenoid branched (iso andanteiso) hydrocarbons were identified unequivocally and in significant amounts in the muscle only. The adipose was the only tissue
which was relatively rich in monoalkenes, and its overall hydrocarbon composition closely resembled that of the feed. The
results of the study are not consistent with metabolic inertness. The observed qualitative and quantitative differences might
reflect function and metabolic activities of the individual organs in a way yet to be elucidated.

Bleached and unbleached forms of a rosemary oleoresin (RO) in stripped and nonstripped soybean oil behave both as antioxidant
and prooxidant in a light-induced oxidative system. At 0.02 and 0.05% levels, RO had the greatest antioxidant activity, while
at 0.01 and 0.5% levels it had the highest prooxidant activity in both stripped and nonstripped soybean oil. Treatment of
both soybean oil systems with tertiary butylhydroquinone controlled light-induced oxidation of the oil better than did the
oleoresin treatments. The prooxidant activity of the 0.5% RO level was probably due to an excess of prooxidant components
being carried into the oil at that level, whereas the reduced antioxidant activity at 0.01% was probably due to the low initial
level of active antioxidant components being added to the oil.

This paper discusses the adoption of a pluralist theoretical framework – one that is also multiparadigmatic – for conducting and publishing information system (IS) research. The discussion is illustrated by a single case study involving the Australian cotton industry. The theoretical framework is informed by three sociological theories, each with its particular paradigmatic assumptions: structuration theory as a meta‐theory, and diffusion of innovations and gender relations as lower‐level theories from notionally opposing paradigms. Theoretical pluralism helped to produce rich findings, illuminating both the social nature of women farmers' roles, the materiality of the cotton farming context, the characteristics of the decision support systems in use and the recursive way in which human agency and institutional pressures shape each other. Because users of so‐called divergent paradigms often face criticism based on the incommensurability issue, one of the main contributions of this paper is to discuss the value of a pluralist and multiparadigmatic theoretical framework in dealing with complex IS social phenomena. 相似文献

Polymer blends, such as those resulting from recycling postconsumer plastics, often have poor mechanical properties. Microcellular foams have been shown to have the potential to improve properties, and permit higher‐value uses of mixed polymer streams. In this study, the effects of microcellular batch processing conditions (foaming time and temperature) and HDPE/PP blend compositions on the cell morphology (the average cell size and cell‐population density) and impact strength were studied. Optical microscopy was used to investigate the miscibility and crystalline morphology of the HDPE/PP blends. Pure HDPE and PP did not foam well at any processing conditions. Blending facilitated the formation of microcellular structures in polyolefins because of the poorly bonded interfaces of immiscible HDPE/PP blends, which favored cell nucleation. The experimental results indicated that well‐developed microcellular structures are produced in HDPE/PP blends at ratios of 50:50 and 30:70. The cell morphology had a strong relationship with the impact strength of foamed samples. Improvement in impact strength was associated with well‐developed microcellular morphology. Polym. Eng. The pyrrolidide and picolinyl ester derivatives of the fatty acids in two natural lipid samples rich in unsaturated fatty
acids, pig testis lipids and cod liver oil were satisfactorily resolved on capillary columns of fused silica coated with stationary
phases of varying polarity. The picolinyl esters, in particular, when subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry on
a column containing a cross-linked methyl silicone, gave distinctive mass spectra, which could be interpreted in terms of

For determining trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) in soy products, the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) Method Ba 12-75 has been used. It measures differences in absorbance at 410 nm of bovine trypsin activity toward a synthetic substrate (Nα-benzoyl-DL-arginine-p-nitroanilide) in the absence and presence of an inhibitor. Recently, a significantly improved method was developed (JAOCS, 2019, 96:635–645), featuring 5 mL of total assay volume, enzyme-last sequence, and single inhibitor level in duplicate. It is proposed as the AOCS Method Ba 12a-2020. As a part of the AOCS method approval process, a collaborative study involving 12 international laboratories was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The study involved measuring TIA in 10 selected test samples plus a blind duplicate. They included soybeans, pulses, cereals, and their processed products (flours, concentrates, and isolates). After rigorous statistical treatment of the data, only three outliers were removed from the data of two samples. Repeatability relative standard deviations (RSDr) for the 11 samples ranged from 0.99% to 5.52%. Reproducibility RSD (RSDR) ranged from 7.07% to 22.92%, with seven samples having RSDR around 10% or less. The remaining four samples had very low TIA, and their RSDR values ranged from 13.34% to 22.92%. The study has demonstrated reliable performance of the proposed AOCS method. Several collaborators carried out additional experiments addressing some aspects of the method, leading to further refinements. The proposed method is undergoing evaluation by the AOCS Uniform Methods Committee for adoption as an Official Method for measuring TIA in various legume and grain products. 相似文献

Thermodynamic quantities were determined for the absorption of hydrogen in Pd-5.5at.%Li and Pd-7.2at.%Li alloys, the latter alloy being in the two-phase field of saturated -Pd(Li,s) solid solution and the ordered Pd7Li phase. Data were also determined for the Pd-10.6at.%Li alloy which consists only of the ordered Pd7Li phase. The data were determined from measurements of pressure-composition isotherms at temperatures between 273 K and 463 K and hydrogen pressures up to 1000 Torr. The Pd---Li alloys dissolve considerable amounts of hydrogen and form a more stable hydride phase than Pd despite the lattice contraction which occurs on alloying Pd with Li. The hydrogen solubility in the ordered Pd7Li phase alone is a little smaller than that in the two-phase mixture. The large hydrogen absorption of Pd---Li alloys, which does not depend on the presence of ordered Pd7Li, may be attributed to (i) an attractive H---Li pair interaction, (ii) a decrease in the strain energies necessary for hydrogen occupation of the interstices, because of the similar lattice parameters of the -Pd(Li,s) and ordered Pd7Li phases, and the large compressibility of Pd---Li alloys, and (iii) the valence of 1 of Li in Pd compared with 3 for, for example, Y in Pd. 相似文献
