Near-Field and Plane-Wave Electromagnetic Coupling into a Slotted Circular Cylinder: Hard or TE Polarization

An analytically tractable model is proposed in this initial study of the electromagnetic phenomena that control our ability to synthesize, by using a near-field source, the effect of plane-wave coupling through an aperture into the interior of a vehicle under test. An integral equation for the tangential electric field in the slot aperture of a perfectly conducting, infinitesimally thin-walled circular cylinder is solved using a basis set of Chebyshev polynomials that are properly weighted according to the static edge condition. The resulting matrix elements from a Galerkin procedure are computed to high precision upon extracting the logarithmic singularity of the kernel of the integral operator. Exact expressions for the matrix elements, in the form of rapidly convergent series of elementary terms, are constructed by isolating another logarithmic function of the aperture width. A minimization of the mean-square error between the true plane-wave response and that due to a near-field line-source establishes the optimal complex source strength of the near-field source     

Abrupt (< 1 day), acute (< 1 week), and early (< 1 month) vessel closure at the angioplasty site. Morphologic observations and causes of closure in 130 necropsy patients undergoing coronary angioplasty

While abundant clinical and angiographic data are available regarding features of acute or abrupt closure at the site of balloon angioplasty, little morphologic information is available. This study discusses morphologic-histologic causes for acute closure after angioplasty in 130 necropsy patients. Intimal-medial flaps, elastic recoil, and primary thrombosis were the three leading morphologic causes for closure. Data were subdivided into time categories: abrupt (< 1 day), acute (< 1 week), and early (< 1 month). Intimal-medial flaps remained the most common cause for angioplasty closure despite time from angioplasty to documented occlusion. Morphologic recognition of types and frequencies of angioplasty closure are discussed, and specific mechanical, pharmacologic, or combined treatments are reviewed.     

Tributary use and large-scale movements of grass carp in Lake Erie

Infrequent captures of invasive, non-native grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) have occurred in Lake Erie over the last 30+ years, with recent evidence suggesting wild reproduction in the lake’s western basin (WB) is occurring. Information on grass carp movements in the Laurentian Great Lakes is lacking, but an improved understanding of large-scale movements and potential areas of aggregation will help inform control strategies and risk assessment if grass carp spread to other parts of Lake Erie and other Great Lakes. Twenty-three grass carp captured in Lake Erie’s WB were implanted with acoustic transmitters and released. Movements were monitored with acoustic receivers deployed throughout Lake Erie and elsewhere in the Great Lakes. Grass carp dispersed up to 236 km, with approximately 25% of fish dispersing greater than 100 km from their release location. Mean daily movements ranged from <0.01 to 2.49 km/day, with the highest daily averages occurring in the spring and summer. The Sandusky, Detroit, and Maumee Rivers, and Plum Creek were the most heavily used WB tributaries. Seventeen percent of grass carp moved into Lake Erie’s central or eastern basins, although all fish eventually returned to the WB. One fish emigrated from Lake Erie through the Huron-Erie Corridor and into Lake Huron. Based on our results, past assessments may have underestimated the potential for grass carp to spread in the Great Lakes. We recommend focusing grass carp control efforts on Sandusky River and Plum Creek given their high use by tagged fish, and secondarily on Maumee and Detroit Rivers.     

DECOUPLER DESIGN AND CONTROL SYSTEM TUNING BY INA FOR DISTILLATION COMPOSITION CONTROL†

Six distillation column models have been used in studies of the usefulness of the Inverse Nyquist Array (INA) method for design of dual composition control for distillation. Five of the column models are experimental, one describing an industrial column, the others four pilot plants. One column model is obtained by modeling from first principles.

The control strategies investigated and compared are multiloop SISO, 2-way decoupling and l-way decoupling. The control variables are the standard ones, i.e. reflux flow and boilup.

In most of the cases INA has been found to be a useful tool for design of the loops and for comparison of the different control approaches. INA has also been found to be useful for simultaneous tuning of the decouplers and the feedback controllers.

For 2-way decoupling the criterion to minimize interaction at the critical frequency for each primary feedback loop has been found useful in most, but not all, cases. The scheme can be designed by pure gains in the decouplers and there is no reason to introduce dynamics into the decouplers—the systems studied are already sufficiently rich in dynamics.

INA has been found to be a suitable vehicle for the choice between the two possible l-way decoupling schemes.

With the design approach taken, l-way decoupling has been found to provide considerably better control quality than 2-way decoupling in two of the six systems, the differences in control quality being small in the other cases.

The effect of model mismatching on the results, caused e.g. by process nonlinearities, is discussed and simple rules to decrease the parameter sensitivity for 2-way decoupling schemes are given. When model mismatching is considered, the advantage of l-way decoupling over 2-way decoupling seems to increase.

One deficiency of the INA design as used in this paper is that it does not single out the design which is to be preferred on the grounds of robustness.     

Highly potent germination inhibitors in aqueous eluate of fruits of Bishop's weed (Ammi majus L.) and avoidance of autoinhibition

The aqueous eluate from fruits ofAmmi majus (Bishop's weed, Umbelliferae) remarkably inhibited germination of adjacent seeds ofAnastatica hierochuntica, lettuce, or tomato but had no effect on intact fruits ofAmmi. Similar inhibition was found in dark or in light, except that seeds ofA. hierochuntica were significantly more inhibited in the dark than in the light. Xanthotoxin was isolated, identified, and found to account for about a sixth of the inhibitory activity of the eluate. After fruits ofAmmi were submerged in a large volume of water for 4 days, the fruits still exuded enough inhibitors to prevent germination ofA. hierochuntica, lettuce, or tomato. Data support also the proposal that the phytotoxins are compartmentalized between the inner and the outer fruit envelopes. The inner layer excludes inhibitors from the embryo and autotoxicity is thus avoided, whereas the outer one ensures a gradual liberation of the phytotoxic compounds. This, as well as the high reactivity of the eluate, the high densities ofAmmi fruits in nature, and their relatively limited annual germination, suggest chemical inhibition of neighboring plant species other thanAmmi. Hence, in addition to their chemical protection against predators of either lower or higher organisms, furanocoumarins in fruits ofAmmi majus may contribute to its success as a weed.

Obesity and its associated disorders are a growing epidemic across the world. Many genetic, physiological, and behavioral factors play a role in the etiology of obesity. Diet and exercise are known to play a valuable role in the treatment and prevention of obesity and associated disorders such as hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to examine the prevalence, etiology, consequences, and treatment of obesity.     

Linear Programming Formulation for Strategic Dynamic Traffic Assignment

This work introduces a novel formulation of system optimal dynamic traffic assignment that captures strategic route choice in users under demand uncertainty. We define strategic route choice to be that users choose a path prior to knowing the true travel demand which will be experienced (therefore users consider the full set of possible demand scenarios). The problem is formulated based on previous work by Ziliaskopoulos (Transp Sci 34(1):37–49, 2000). The resulting novel formulation requires substantial enhancement to account for path-based flows and scenario-based stochastic demands. Further, a numerical demonstration is presented on a network with different demand loading profiles. Finally, model complexity, implications on scalability and future research directions are discussed.     

Sorting streamed multisets

Sorting is a classic problem and one to which many others reduce easily. In the streaming model, however, we are allowed only one pass over the input and sublinear memory, so in general we cannot sort. In this paper we show that, to determine the sorted order of a multiset s of size n containing σ?2 distinct elements using one pass and o(nlogσ) bits of memory, it is generally necessary and sufficient that its entropy H=o(logσ). Specifically, if s={s₁,…,sn} and si₁,…,sin is the stable sort of s, then we can compute i₁,…,in in one pass using O((H+1)n) time and O(Hn) bits of memory, with a simple combination of classic techniques. On the other hand, in the worst case it takes that much memory to compute any sorted ordering of s in one pass.
