The ability of ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy (UVRRS) to determine structural, environmental, and analytical information concerning low-concentration aqueous biomolecules makes it a powerful bioanalytical and biophysical technique. Unfortunately, its utility has been limited by experimental requirements that preclude in situ or in vivo studies in most cases. We have developed the first high-performance fiber-optic probes suitable for long-term use in pulsed UVRRS applications in the deep- UV (DUV, 205-250 nm). The probes incorporate recently developed improved ultraviolet (IUV) fibers that do not exhibit the rapid solarization and throughput decay that previously hampered the use of optical fibers for delivering pulsed, DUV light. A novel 90 degrees mirrored collection geometry is used to overcome the inner-filtering effects that plague flush-probe geometries. The IUV fibers are characterized with respect to their efficacy at transmitting pulsed, DUV laser light, and prototype probes are used to obtain pulsed UVRRS data of aromatic amino acids, proteins, and hormones at low concentrations with 205-240-nm pulsed excitation. Efficient probe geometries and fabrication methods are presented. The performance of the probes in examining resonance-enhanced Raman signals from absorbing chromophores is investigated, and the optimal excitation wavelength is shown to be significantly red-shifted from the maximum of the resonance Raman enhancement profile. Generally applicable procedures for determining optimal experimental conditions are also introduced.  相似文献

Biologically-inspired methods such as evolutionary algorithms and neural networks are proving useful in the field of information fusion. Artificial immune systems (AISs) are a biologically-inspired approach which take inspiration from the biological immune system. Interestingly, recent research has shown how AISs which use multi-level information sources as input data can be used to build effective algorithms for realtime computer intrusion detection. This research is based on biological information fusion mechanisms used by the human immune system and as such might be of interest to the information fusion community. The aim of this paper is to present a summary of some of the biological information fusion mechanisms seen in the human immune system, and of how these mechanisms have been implemented as AISs.  相似文献

Metaphors are often used to provide the user with a mental model to ease the use of computers. An example of such a metaphor is the commonly used “Desktop Metaphor”. Metaphors also can be used to ease context-aware information access for the users of mobile information systems. In this paper we present a taxonomy that allows the categorisation of such metaphors. Furthermore, we give an overview of existing metaphors and their implementations. After introducing some new metaphors we conclude our considerations with a classification of new and existing metaphors using our taxonomy.  相似文献

The topological properties of a set of nuclei undergoing a phase transformation were investigated. The nuclei were spread out in a plane according to a Poisson distribution. All centres started to grow at the same moment and with the same constant rate. They grew circularly and free of shrinking. The mean numbers per nucleus of grain boundaries, triple points and growth fronts were calculated as functions of the degree of transformation, F (0F1). For these relationships we deduce plain and exact expressions.  相似文献

A growing two-dimensional cell model is defined as follows. In an area there are Poisson-distributed nuclei. Arising from these nuclei, grains start to grow simultaneously. All grains grow circularly with the same constant radial growth rate . During the process of growth no new nuclei are formed. If two grains touch each other, growth is stopped there by formation of a straight grain boundary. We arbitrarily put a straight line, called Rosiwal's line, into the area. While grains are growing many straight grain boundaries and circular growth fronts cross Rosiwal's line. At a fixed fraction transformed, F(=crystallized area/total area), we consider the different extension rates of growth fronts (growing borders) along Rosiwal's line, v( v<), in the left (or right) direction. The number of grains that have a growth front along Rosiwal's line into the left (or right) direction depends on F. Although the number changes with variation of F, we obtained theoretically the surprising result that the distribution density of reduced extension rates V = v/ , w(V), does not depend on F, and is always V –2(V 2–1)–1/2. In order to verify this result we found an experimental possibility to realize the growing two-dimensional cell model.  相似文献

A new electron beam-based approach for the direct functionalization of polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polysulfone as well as polyacrylonitrile membranes in a one-step procedure is presented. Aqueous solutions of functional molecules were immobilized on the membrane surface by electron beam treatment. The resulting membranes show significantly increased flux and water wettability accompanied by decreased protein adsorption. Stability tests demonstrated the permanence of the modification. This new method neither requires any preceding surface functionalization nor the use of catalysts/photoinitiators or other toxic reagents. In addition, it avoids the synthesis of hydrophilic monomers/polymers, thus avoiding additional synthetic and purification steps as well as the use of organic solvents.  相似文献

Consumers check few sites in online purchases. Previous research and experiments we perform demonstrate that consumers can not calculate the optimal strategy for price search. They use heuristics whose performance is better than random and less than optimal. To investigate online price search performance we survey student online textbook purchases. Students achieve good performance because they start with a good strategy and online market organization of marketplace and meta-search sites. An important factor is that algorithms at sites searched perform calculations that reduce the computational complexity of the search.  相似文献

Using immunohistochemical techniques both at light and electron microscopic levels, the arrangement and distribution of intermediate filaments in Sertoli cells of normal testis (in rat and human), during pre- and postnatal development (in rabbit, rat, and mouse) and under experimental and pathological conditions (human, rat), have been studied and related to the pertinent literature. Intermediate filaments are centered around the nucleus, where they apparently terminate in the nuclear envelope providing a perinuclear stable core area. From this area they radiate to the plasma membranes; apically often a close association with microtubules is seen. Basally, direct contacts of the filaments with focal adhesions occur, while the relationship to the different junctions of Sertoli cells is only incompletely elucidated. In the rat (not in human) a group of filaments is closely associated with the ectoplasmic specializations surrounding the head of elongating spermatids. Both in rat and human, changes in cell shape during the spermatogenic cycle are associated with a redistribution of intermediate filaments. As inferred from in vitro studies reported in the literature, these changes are at least partly hormone-dependent (vimentin phosphorylation subsequent to FSH stimulation) and influenced by local factors (basal lamina, germ cells). Intermediate filaments, therefore, are suggested to be involved in the hormone-dependent mechanical integration of exogenous and endogenous cell shaping forces. They permit a cycle-dependent compartmentation of the Sertoli cell into a perinuclear stable zone and a peripheral trafficking zone with fluctuating shape. The latter is important with respect to the germ cell-supporting surface of the cell which seems to limit the spermatogenetic potential of the male gonad.  相似文献
