Vibrating cylinder in a cylindrical duct filled with an incompressible fluid of low viscosity

Summary The dynamic interaction of an elastically supported rigid cylinder and a surrounding incompressible fluid in a coaxial cylindrical duct is studied. Attention is focussed on a fluid of low viscosity so that conventional approaches lead to uncertain results. Here a singular perturbation analysis is performed which overcomes the difficulties. As a quantitative result, the complex-valued eigenvalue of the vibrating body in the fluid is computed.     

Noninvasive assessment of hepatobiliary and renal elimination of cysteinyl leukotrienes by positron emission tomography

N-Acetyl-leukotriene E4 has been identified as an endogenous, biologically less active cysteinyl leukotriene metabolite in rodents and humans. To evaluate the ratio of hepatobiliary to renal elimination of leukotrienes noninvasively by positron emission tomography (PET), we synthesized N-[11C]acetyl-leukotriene E4 by chemical N-acetylation of leukotriene E4. After the intravenous injection of N-[11C]acetyl-leukotriene E4 in normal rats and monkey, uptake by the liver and subsequent excretion into bile were largely responsible for its rapid elimination from blood. In the Cynomolgus monkey, renal excretion of the leukotriene into urine was of additional quantitative importance. Kinetic modeling indicated a mean transit time through the liver of 17 minutes and 34 minutes in rat and monkey, respectively; the corresponding hepatic excretion half-times amounted to 8.5 minutes and 16 minutes. In a mutant rat strain deficient in the hepatobiliary excretion of cysteinyl leukotrienes across the canalicular membrane, the apparent mean liver transit time was 54 minutes, and the hepatic excretion half-time was 29 minutes, indicating prolonged organ storage and metabolism. After transport from the liver back into the circulating blood of omega-oxidized and beta-oxidized metabolites of N-[11C]acetyl-leukotriene E4, renal excretion compensated for the impairment of hepatobiliary elimination in the transport mutant. Metabolite analyses in urine after intravenous injection of N-[3H]acetyl-leukotriene E4 indicated the extensive inactivation of N-acetyl-leukotriene E4 by beta-oxidation from the omega-end in the mutants. A similar shift from hepatobiliary to renal cysteinyl leukotriene elimination was monitored in rats with cholestasis due to bile duct obstruction.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

An image processing IC for backprojection and spatial histogrammingin a pipelined array

The first VLSI digital signal processor that performs both high-precision image backprojection and spatial histogram calculations at raster-scan rates as high as 30 MHz is described. Realized in 1 μm CMOS technology, this 13.3 mm×13.3 mm chip is designed to handle images as large as 1024×1024 12 b pixels. Loadable coefficients and a unified architecture allow this IC to be used with a variety of computed-tomography scanners for image reconstructions, including fan- and parallel-beam reconstruction. This chip also computes the forward Radon transform, which is a spatial histogram, permitting it to be used for iterative reconstruction algorithms. The bit lengths in the fixed-point architecture assure 12 b reconstruction accuracy

The dad-as-cad myth suggests intentional malevolence or at least blatant failure by fathers to care for others, and suggests that their failure to share equally in child care and household management is the primary cause of marital conflict. W. B. Johnson and D. Hayes propose a research agenda for fathering that originates in a coherent model of male development in the context of ever-changing environmental demands. Border crossing for hospital care and its implications for the use of statewide data

A major concern of researchers using state data sets for population-based analyses and market share studies in the health care sector is the potential bias caused by 'border crossing'--patients receiving care out of state. By using the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) discharge abstract files for 1987 and 1988, we found that 'border crossing' is not a serious problem for the two large states we examined. Only 4.4% of New York patients and 2.15% of California patients received care out of state. At the county and zip code level, 'border crossing' is more frequent but tends to be concentrated in areas adjacent to other states. Even excluding all zips with more than 10% of patients crossing the 'border' results in a small loss of patients (2.2% for New York and 1.0% for California).     

Neurotrophins and their receptors in the adult hypo- and hyperthyroid rat after kainic acid injection: an in situ hybridization study

Thyroid hormone plays a key role in trophic events during development of the central nervous system. In spite of neurological and psychiatric symptoms associated with adult hypothyroidism, the role of thyroid hormone in mature brain function is less clear. In this paper we investigated the effect of thyroid status on kainic acid-induced up-regulation of mRNAs for members of the nerve growth factor family and related receptors in adult male rats by means of in situ hybridization. We found that in hypothyroid rats there is a dramatic attenuation of the kainic acid-induced up-regulation of mRNA levels for nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and tyrosine kinase trkB in euthyroid rats. A trend to reduced c-fos mRNA up-regulation, which did not reach significance, was also found, whereas the increase in c-jun mRNA after kainic acid was similar in eu-, hypo- and hyperthyroid rats. These data indicate a severe impairment of the regulation of neurotrophin synthesis after excitotoxin administration in the hippocampus during adult hypothyroidism. Possible roles of thyroid hormone in molecular, biochemical and metabolic mechanisms of this defect are discussed.     

Polymerase chain reaction versus culture for detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis in the urogenital tract of adults and the respiratory tract of newborns

The efficiency of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was compared with that of culture for detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis in 726 clinical specimens comprising 189 gynecological samples, 362 urological samples, and 175 samples from newborn infants. The sensitivity of PCR versus culture was 95% for both organisms, while the sensitivity of culture versus PCR was 91% for Ureaplasma urealyticum and 84% for Mycoplasma hominis. Furthermore, PCR tests were faster than culture tests, allowing the time to diagnosis to be reduced from two to five days to 24 h.     

Cora valveless pulsatile rotary pump: new design and control

For decades, research for developing a totally implantable artificial ventricle has been carried on. For 4 to 5 years, two devices have been investigated clinically. For many years, we have studied a rotary (but not centrifugal) pump that furnishes pulsatile flow without a valve and does not need external venting or a compliance chamber. It is a hypocycloidal pump based on the principle of the Maillard-Wankel rotary compressor. Currently made of titanium, it is activated by an electrical brushless direct-current motor. The motor-pump unit is totally sealed and implantable, without noise or vibration. This pump was implanted as a left ventricular assist device in calves. The midterm experiments showed good hemodynamic function. The hemolysis was low, but serious problems were encountered: blood components collecting on the gear mechanism inside the rotor jammed the pump. We therefore redesigned the pump to seal the gear mechanism. We used a double system to seal the open end of the rotor cavity with components polished to superfine optical quality. In addition, we developed a control system based on the study of the predicted shape of the motor current. The new design is now underway. We hope to start chronic experiments again in a few months. If the problem of sealing the bearing could be solved, the Cora ventricle could be used as permanent totally implantable left ventricular assist device.     

Immigrants and health: unemployment and health-risks of labour migrants in the Federal Republic of Germany, 1984-1992

This article presents a longitudinal study of employment, unemployment and health of migrant workers in Germany. The analyses were conducted with longitudinal samples of the waves 1-6 (1984-1989) and the waves 6-9 (1989-1992) of the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). German and migrant workers did not respect to their health satisfaction but unemployed foreign workers were quite less satisfied with their health than unemployed Germans. This corresponded with a high percentage of foreign unemployed (30-50%) who felt chronically ill. A further examination of two (dichotomously formulated) principal investigation hypotheses could not show that the data support the explanation that the poorer health of unemployed migrants was caused by the unemployment situation. The results are interpreted in the way that the unemployed migrants' poorer health can be explained with (health) selection processes in the labour market.
