We extend an abstract agent-based swarming model based on the evolution of neural network controllers, to explore further the emergence of swarming. Our model is grounded in the ecological situation, in which agents can access some information from the environment about the resource location, but through a noisy channel. Swarming critically improves the efficiency of group foraging, by allowing agents to reach resource areas much more easily by correcting individual mistakes in group dynamics. As high levels of noise may make the emergence of collective behavior depend on a critical mass of agents, it is crucial to reach sufficient computing power to allow for the evolution of the whole set of dynamics in simulation. Since simulating neural controllers and information exchanges between agents are computationally intensive, to scale up simulations to model critical masses of individuals, the implementation requires careful optimization. We apply techniques from astrophysics known as treecodes to compute the signal propagation, and efficiently parallelize for multi-core architectures. Our results open up future research on signal-based emergent collective behavior as a valid collective strategy for uninformed search over a domain space.  相似文献

This paper reports a fundamental study of the stripe laminar flow pattern on a centrifugal microfluidic device with the goal of realizing a sedimentation-based, continuous mode particle separation technique. Microfluidic channels were designed with a concentrically integrated microchannel, and the patterning of the flow in the channel was investigated. A significant secondary flow was observed as a preliminary result. We conclude that the origin of this secondary flow was not the Dean force, because it was observed in a straight microchannel, but was not observed in curved channel during the spinning of the system at rest. The transition of the pattern was investigated using a simulation and experiment, and the flow pattern’s dependence on the rotational speed was determined, which suggested that the origin of the secondary flow was the Coriolis force. The significance of the secondary flow was controlled by adjusting the rotational speed of the disk, and the flow rate and laminar flow patterns were controlled by the stripe flow pattern.  相似文献

Scaled teleoperation is increasingly prevalent in medicine, as well as in other applications of robotics. Visual feedback in such systems is essential and should make maximal use of natural hand-eye coordination. This paper describes a new method of visual feedback for scaled teleoperation in which the operator manipulates the handle of a remote tool in the presence of a registered virtual image of the target in real time. The method adapts a concept already used successfully in a new medical device called the sonic flashlight, which permits direct in situ visualization of ultrasound during invasive procedures. The sonic flashlight uses a flat-panel monitor and a half-silvered mirror to merge the visual outer surface of a patient with a simultaneous ultrasound scan of the patient's interior. Adapting the concept to scaled teleoperation involves removing the imaging device and the target to a remote location and adding a master-slave control device. This permits the operator to see his hands, along with what appears to be the tool, and the target, merged in a workspace that preserves natural hand-eye coordination. Three functioning prototypes are described, one based on ultrasound and two on light microscopy. The limitations and potential of the new approach are discussed.  相似文献

The delayed retardation phenomena of fatigue crack growth resulting from a single application of overload were investigated for five steels, two aluminium alloys and a titanium alloy. As long as the small scale yielding condition was satisfied at the overloaded crack tips, the retardation behaviour of these materials was expressed consistently by four parameters; the peak/baseline stress ratio, r, the exponent in the Paris equation, m, the overload-affected zone size, D, and the crack distance at the minimum rate of crack growth, B. Then the parameters, B and D, characterizing the retardation phenomena for these materials were determined. The retardation of aluminium alloys was stronger than that of the other materials. This is attributed to the lower value of B/ D in aluminium alloys than in the other materials. In the case of r=2, the overload-affected zone sizes, D, were nearly equal to 1.5 0 in HT80 steel and aluminium alloys, slightly lower than 1.5 0 in SNCM8 steel and much larger than 1.5 0 in A553 steel and the titanium alloy, where 0 is the monotonic plastic zone size calculated according to the Dugdale model. The dependence of retardation on baseline stress intensity, K 1, appeared somewhat complicated. In the cases of A553 steel and A2017 aluminium alloy the amount of retardation increased with increasing K 1 value, while in the cases of HT80 steel and Ti-6A1-4V titanium alloy the tendency appeared in the reverse direction. The former behaviour was related to the change in the stress state from plane strain to plane stress at the overloaded crack tips and the latter was related to the threshold of stress intensity.  相似文献

Solidification of Coal Fly-ash (CFA) has been carried out using a hydrothermal processing method. In the hydrothermal processing, the CFA was first compacted in a mold at 20 - 50 MPa, and then hydrothermally cured in an autoclave. The hydrothermal curing was performed at 150 – 250°C for 15 – 60 h. The experimental results showed that NaOH solution, Ca(OH)2 content, compaction pressure, autoclave curing temperature and time significantly affected the strength of solidified bodies. The most important strength-producing constituent in the solidified bodies produced with CFA was tobermorite, or tobermorite-like calcium silicate hydrate. When the CaO/SiO2 ratio of the starting material was close to 0.83, tobermorite readily formed and the formed tobermorite enhanced the strength of solidified bodies. The tensile strength determined by the Brazilian test reached more than 10 MPa under the hydrothermal processing. As such, the hydrothermal processing method may provide a high potential for recycling CFA on a large scale.  相似文献

Nano-polycrystalline diamonds (NPDs) consist of nanosized diamond grains oriented in random directions. They have high toughness and isotropic mechanical properties. A NPD has neither the cleavage feature nor the anisotropy of hardness peculiar to single-crystal diamonds. Therefore, it is thought to be useful as a diamond anvil. We previously reported the usefulness of a NPD as an anvil for high-pressure development. In this study, some additional high-pressure generating tests using diamond anvils of various shapes prepared from NPDs were conducted to investigate the advantage of using NPDs for anvil applications. The results revealed that the achievable pressure value of a NPD anvil with a culet size of more than 300 μm is about 1.5 to 2 times higher than that of single-crystal diamond anvils, indicating that NPD anvils have considerable potential for large-volume diamond anvils with large culet sizes.  相似文献

In 1985 we developed an ultrahigh-resolution scanning electron microscope with a resolution of 0.5 nm. It is equipped with a field emission gun and an objective lens with a very short focal length. In this study we report a survey of some different preparation techniques and biological specimens using the new scanning electron microscope. Intracellular structures such as cell organelles were observed surprisingly sharper than those observed by ordinary scanning electron microscopes. However, at magnifications over 250,000 X, platinum particles could be discerned as scattered pebbles on the surface of all structures in coated materials. Using an uncoated but conductively stained specimen, we successfully observed ribosomes on a rough endoplasmic reticulum at a direct magnification of 1 million. In these images some protrusions were recognized on the ribosomes. Ferritin and immunoglobulin G were used as samples of biological macromolecules. These samples were observed without metal coating and conductive staining. The ferritin particles appeared as rounded bodies without any substructure on the surface and immunoglobulin G as complexes of three-unit bodies. In the latter the central body might correspond to the Fc fragment and two side ones to Fab fragments. We assume that ultrahigh-resolution scanning electron microscopy is an effective means for observation of the cell fine structures and biological macromolecules. A new type fluid dynamic bearing spindle motor has been developed for use in a small hard disk drive for mobile applications. Classified as an untied type motor in its basic construction, the new motor is constructed so that it prevents oil leakage and enhances the rigidity of the hard disk drive chassis. The characteristic structural feature of the motor is a hollow rotary spindle through which a stationary shaft is installed. The stationary shaft does not interfere with spindle rotation. Since the stationary shaft is secured between the top cover and base chassis, the motor enhances hard disk drive chassis rigidity, which is an advantage that cannot be achieved by the conventional untied type motor. Although measuring small and thin, the motor has excellent rotational accuracy and shock resistance.  相似文献

The determination of the kokumi peptide, γ-glutamyl-valyl-glycine (γ-Glu-Val-Gly) in raw scallop and processed scallop products was carried out using high pressure liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The detection of γ-Glu-Val-Gly was achieved using a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) method. The optimised condition enabled the precise determination of γ-Glu-Val-Gly. Raw scallop contained 0.08 μg/g γ-Glu-Val-Gly, and the γ-Glu-Val-Gly levels in processed scallop products, such as dried-scallop and scallop extract, were measured to be 0.64 and 0.77 μg/g, respectively. This is the first report to confirm the existence of γ-Glu-Val-Gly in foodstuff.  相似文献
