On the Role of Oxygen Storage in Three-Way Catalysis

The role of the so-called oxygen storage and release capacity (OSC) in promoting the activity of noble metals in the three-way catalysts (TWCs) is critically discussed. It is shown that the promoting effects of CeO₂ in the TWCs cannot be attributed to a simple redox type of effect according to the reaction CeO₂ ? CeO_{2 ? x} + x/2O₂, since multiple and sometimes intriguing effects of CeO₂ promoter have been observed, particularly in the latest generation of TWCs containing modified CeO₂–ZrO₂ mixed oxides.     

Pd/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2/Al2O3 as advanced materials for three-way catalysts: Part 1. Catalyst characterisation, thermal stability and catalytic activity in the reduction of NO by CO

Pd-loaded Ce_0.6Zr_0.4O₂ solid solutions supported on Al₂O₃ are investigated as catalysts for the reduction of NO by CO. The attention is focused on the role of the Ce_0.6Zr_0.4O₂ and of the Pd dispersion on the catalytic activity. The system shows a very high activity below 500 K, which is almost independent on the Pd dispersion. The high activity is attributed to a promoting effect of the Ce_0.6Zr_0.4O₂ on the NO conversion. Investigation of the influence of high temperature treatments disclosed a thermal stabilisation of both Ce_0.6Zr_0.4O₂ and Al₂O₃ in the Ce_0.6Zr_0.4O₂/Al₂O₃ system.     

Combined Protein and Alkaloid Research of Chelidonium majus Latex Reveals CmMLP1 Accompanied by Alkaloids with Cytotoxic Potential to Human Cervical Carcinoma Cells

Chelidonium majus L. is a latex-bearing plant used in traditional folk medicine to treat human papillomavirus (HPV)-caused warts, papillae, and condylomas. Its latex and extracts are rich in many low-molecular compounds and proteins, but there is little or no information on their potential interaction. We describe the isolation and identification of a novel major latex protein (CmMLP1) composed of 147 amino acids and present a model of its structure containing a conserved hydrophobic cavity with high affinity to berberine, 8-hydroxycheleritrine, and dihydroberberine. CmMLP1 and the accompanying three alkaloids were present in the eluted chromatographic fractions of latex. They decreased in vitro viability of human cervical cancer cells (HPV-negative and HPV-positive). We combined, for the first time, research on macromolecular and low-molecular-weight compounds of latex-bearing plants in contrast to other studies that investigated proteins and alkaloids separately. The observed interaction between latex protein and alkaloids may influence our knowledge on plant defense. The proposed toolbox may help in further understanding of plant disease resistance and in pharmacological research.

Erfassung der Randschubspannung zwischen Werkzeug und Werkstück durch die Einführung eines veränderlichen Reibwertes. Abhängigkeit des Reibwertes von Druck, (Relativ-Geschwindigkeit und Temperatur aus vorliegenden physikalischen Untersuchungen der Reibverhältnisse; Reibgesetze aus Auswertung des einschlägigen Schrifttums. Vergleich verschiedener Reibgesetze bei den Umformverfahren Ziehen, Bandwalzen und Stauchen mit Hilfe der elementaren Theorie. Folgerungen für die Anwendung eines örtlich veränderlichen Reibwertes bei der Berechnung plastischer Umformvorgänge.

Direkte Wasserkühlung von Stahldraht nach dem Ziehvorgang. Berechnung des Temperaturgefälles in einem dem Ziehhol nachgeschalteten Kühlrohr. Messung der Drahttemperaturdifferenz zwischen Kühlrohrein- und -austritt mit der Infrarotthermometrie zur Bestimmung des Wärmeübergangskoeffizienten an der Drahtoberfläche. Ermittlung des Emissionsgrades.     

First liquid single crystal elastomer containing lactic acid derivative as chiral co-monomer: Synthesis and properties

For the first time new type of liquid single crystal elastomers forming the chiral smectic A^* (SmA^*) phase has been prepared using chiral lactic acid derivative as a co-monomer. The synthesis and the basic characterization of the ferroelectric liquid crystalline co-monomer based on differential scanning calorimetry and small/wide-angle X-ray scattering are reported and discussed. The monomer possesses the paraelectric SmA^* and the ferroelectric SmC^* phases over a broad temperature range. The preparation of new smectic liquid crystalline elastomers together with characterization of their mesomorphic and structural properties is also reported. New elastomers possess the orthogonal paraelectric SmA^* phase over 50 K broad temperature range.
