In this paper, an anatomically accurate three-dimensional finite-element (FE) model of the human lumbar spine (L2-L3) was used to study the biomechanical effects of graded bilateral and unilateral facetectomies of L3 under anterior shear. The intact L2-L3 FE model was validated under compression, tension, and shear loading and the predicted responses matched well with experimental data. The gross external (translational and coupled) responses, flexibilities, and facet load were delineated for these iatrogenic changes. Results indicted that unilateral facetectomy of greater than 75% and bilateral facetectomy of 75% or more resection markedly alter the translational displacement and flexibilities of the motion segment. This study suggests that fixation or fusion to restore strength and stability of the lumbar spine may be required for surgical intervention of greater than 75% facetectomy. 相似文献

A novel method employing CE-ESMS and precursor ion scanning was developed for the selective detection of nucleotide-activated sugars. By using precursor ion scanning for fragment ions specific to the different nucleotide carriers, i.e., ions at m/z 322 for cytidine monophosphate, m/z 323, 385, and 403 for uridine diphosphate, m/z 362, 424, and 442, for guanosine diphosphate, and m/z 346, 408, and 426 for adenosine diphosphate, it was possible to selectively detect sugar nucleotides involved in the biosynthesis of glycoconjugates such as glycoproteins and lipopolysaccharides. Enhancement of sensitivity was achieved using N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N'-(2-ethanesulfonic acid) as a sample stacking buffer and provided detection limits between 0.2 and 3.8 pmol.mL(-)(1). The present CE-ESMS method provided linear dynamic ranges over the concentrations 0.2-164 nM (r(2) = 0.952-0.997) for different nucleotide sugar standards. The application of this method is demonstrated for the identification of intracellular pools of sugar nucleotides in wild type and isogenic mutants from the bacterial pathogen Campylobacter jejuni. By using product ion scanning (with and without front-end collision-induced dissociation), it was possible to determine the precise nature of unexpected sugar nucleotides involved in the biosynthesis of pseudaminic acid, a sialic acid-like sugar previously observed on the flagellin of some pathogenic bacteria. 相似文献

A diverse set of 53 cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors which were aligned in two different ways were subjected to CoMFA analysis. The first method of alignment of the molecules was based on the binding information sourced from the crystallographic study, from which CoMFA Model 1 was derived. The second mode of alignment was generated by docking the inhibitors in the binding pocket using the DOCK and AFFINITY suite of programs; this gave a second model. The CoMFA Model 2 was slightly better than Model 1 in terms of the statistical parameters r(2) and q(2). The two models could predict very well the activity of a test set of diverse molecules, with a predictive r(2) of 0.593 and 0.768, respectively. Besides the QSAR results, the docking studies give a deep insight into the H-bonding interactions between the inhibitors and residues in the active site of the enzyme, which can be exploited in designing better inhibitors. Useful ideas on activity improvement could be gleaned from these models. 相似文献

Well-aligned nitrogen-doped multiwall carbon nanotube arrays have been successfully grown over large areas on quartz and silicon wafers by floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition at low temperatures (600 degrees C). These nitrogen-including nanotubes, derived from pyridine-ferrocene mixtures, have smaller outer diameters but larger inner diameters compared with carbon nanotubes grown from a xylene-ferrocene mixture under similar conditions. The N-doped nanotubes exhibit bamboo-like structures in the core. Elemental analysis and electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis show that the as-prepared nanotubes contain as much as 2.62 wt.% N, with most of the N concentrated in the inner few shells of the nanotube. Such large-scale arrays of well-aligned N-doped nanotubes on silicon wafers have a current density as high as 23.8 mA/cm2 at an applied electric field of 17 V/micron, which can be further improved by patterning the tubes and coating the silicon substrate with a conductive thin metal film for the fabrication of flat panel displays. 相似文献

This paper proposes a technique to improve the quality of high-resolution electrocardiogram by weighting the coherent average of beats by a function of the energy of the corrupting myoelectric noise, prior to subsequent detection of ventricular late potentials. Palladium was electrodeposited onto lithographically patterned Si(100) "micro-channels" with dimensions of 2 microm (width) x 100 microm (length). The properties of these Pd-covered Si micro-channels for detecting dihydrogen gas were then evaluated. Pd electrodeposition was carried out under conditions favoring an instantaneous nucleation and growth mechanism. This strategy produced size-similar Pd particles at a coverage of (4-6) x 10(9) cm(-2) within the confines of the Si micro-channel. When the mean particle radius, ro, was smaller than a critical value (ro < rc = 70-85 nm), each Pd particle was well separated on the surface from adjacent particles, on average, and no response to H2 gas attributable to the micro-channel was observed. As Pd particles were grown larger, to a mean radius of ro approximately equal to rc, adjacent particles on the surface touched and the electrical resistance of the micro-channel dropped by several orders of magnitude. These "type 2" H2 sensors exhibited a rapid (< 1 s), reversible decrease in their resistance in response to exposure to H2 above 0.5%, but a minimum resistance was observed at 1-2%, and a resistance increase was seen at higher H2 concentration. This complex behavior resulted from the existence of three mechanisms for charge transport across the micro-channel. If still larger quantities of Pd were deposited, the Pd particle ensemble coalesced into an electrically continuous film. These "type 3" sensors became more resistive in the presence of H2, not more conductive as seen for sensors of types 1 and 2, but the amplitude of this response was smaller than seen for type 2 sensors. 相似文献

LiCoO2 is the most common lithium storage material for lithium rechargeable batteries, used widely to power portable electronic devices such as laptop computers. Operation of lithium rechargeable batteries is dependent on reversible lithium insertion and extraction processes into and from the host materials of lithium storage. Ordering of lithium and vacancies has a profound effect on the physical properties of the host materials and the electrochemical performance of lithium batteries. However, probing lithium ions has been difficult when using traditional X-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques due to lithium's relatively low scattering power when compared with those of oxygen and transition metals. In the work presented here, we have succeeded in simultaneously resolving columns of cobalt, oxygen and lithium atoms in layered LiCoO2 battery material, using experimental focal series of LiCoO2 images obtained at sub-?ngstrom resolution in a mid-voltage transmission electron microscope. Lithium atoms are the smallest and lightest metal atoms, and scatter electrons only very weakly. We believe our observations of lithium to be the first by electron microscopy, and that they show promise for direct visualization of the ordering of lithium and vacancies in transition metal oxides. 相似文献

Prototypes were designed, manufactured and then evaluated for use in surgery. Further evaluation was performed, if necessary, and the design finalized, in accordance with BS EN 12011. The role of cerium oxide on direct oxidation of perchloroethylene (PCE) by a three-way catalyst was explored. In the absence of an external oxidizing agent, PCE was oxidized over an alumina supported Pt/Rh three-way catalyst.
