Centuries of human development have altered the connectivity of rivers, adversely impacting ecosystems and the services they provide. Significant investments in natural resource projects are made annually with the goal of restoring function to degraded rivers and floodplains and protecting freshwater resources. Yet restoration projects often fall short of their objectives, in part due to the lack of systems-based strategic planning. To evaluate channel-floodplain (dis)connectivity and erosion/incision hazard at the basin scale, we calculate Specific Stream Power (SSP), an estimate of the energy of a river, using a topographically based, low-complexity hydraulic model. Other basin-wide SSP modeling approaches neglect reach-specific geometric information embedded in Digital Elevation Models. Our approach leverages this information to generate reach-specific SSP-flow curves. We extract measures from these curves that describe (dis)connected floodwater storage capacity and erosion hazard at individual design storm flood stages and demonstrate how these measures may be used to identify watershed-scale patterns in connectivity. We show proof-of-concept using 25 reaches in the Mad River watershed in central Vermont and demonstrate that the SSP results have acceptable agreement with a well-calibrated process-based model (2D Hydraulic Engineering Center's River Analysis System) across a broad range of design events. While systems-based planning of regional restoration and conservation activities has been limited, largely due to computational and human resource requirements, measures derived from low-complexity models can provide an overview of reach-scale conditions at the regional level and aid planners in identifying areas for further restoration and/or conservation assessments.  相似文献

Freshwater species native to the Laurentian Great Lakes region face numerous environmental stressors, and the conservation status and ecological relationships of many remain poorly understood. One such species, the mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus), is declining, but better information on their natural history and development of more effective population monitoring techniques is needed. We assessed seasonal variation in capture success, biases in capture techniques, and feeding ecology of mudpuppies in Wolf Lake, a highly perturbed and urban former estuarine wetland complex to Lake Michigan. Trapping periods of ≥ 3 consecutive nights occurred from January to May 2015, and October 2015 to March 2016. Overall trapping success differed among trapping periods (p = 0.01) and declined precipitously at water temperatures above 14.1 °C (p < 0.001). Mudpuppies in traps (mean 26.9 ± 0.5 cm) were larger than those caught with hand nets (mean 14.7 ± 0.8 cm, p < 0.0001), suggesting that multiple methods may be needed to accurately assess demographics. Stomach contents obtained through gastric lavage included mollusks, leeches, insects, isopods, amphipods, crayfish, fish, a frog, and a juvenile conspecific. Invasive species, including rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus), round gobies (Neogobius melanostomus), and zebra/quagga mussels (Dreissena spp.) were present in guts, suggesting mudpuppy foraging has changed along with aquatic communities in the region. Prey community analyses revealed differences in overall diet among size classes of mudpuppies (p = 0.001), but relatively weak similarity within size classes. Results suggest that mudpuppies in lake ecosystems occupy a broad niche that changes as they grow.  相似文献

Flocculation is a common and inexpensive method for harvesting algae from solution. After nitrogen starvation, it was shown that 83 ± 3% of the wall-deficient cells of the cw 15 mutant of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii flocculated from 12 mL samples within 15 min after the addition of 15 mM calcium chloride at pH 8.4. Only 24 ± 2% of the wildtype strain flocculated under these conditions, thus demonstrating how a simple mutation might facilitate process design. The data suggested that algae grown in waters with similar calcium concentrations (e.g. certain wastewaters) might be harvested through simple pH adjustment. It was also discovered that the addition of small amounts (<5% v/v) of methanol could significantly reduce the calcium needed to achieve flocculation. Within 15 min after addition of 12 mM calcium chloride and 4.6% (v/v) methanol, 83 ± 4% of cw15 cells flocculated. Methanol is fully recoverable by distillation, and its use might enable flocculation without further water salinization when media calcium concentrations fall short of 15 mM. It was further shown that substrates for and/or products of cellular growth affected flocculation adversely. Nearly 81% of cells flocculated from fresh medium compared to only 54% in spent medium.  相似文献

The Community Multi-Scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system was used to investigate ozone and aerosol concentrations in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) during hot summertime conditions during July 1-15, 1996. Two emission inventories (El) were developed: emissions for the first El were based upon the National Emission Trend 1996 (NET96) database and the BEIS2 biogenic emission model, and emissions for the second El were developed through a "bottom up" approach that included biogenic emissions obtained from the GLOBEIS model. The two simulations showed that elevated PM2.5 concentrations occurred near and downwind of the Interstate-5 corridor along the foothills of the Cascade Mountains and in forested areas of central Idaho. The relative contributions of organic and inorganic aerosols varied by region, but generally organic aerosols constituted the largest fraction of PM2.5. In wilderness areas near the 1-5 corridor, organic carbon from anthropogenic sources contributed approximately 50% of the total organic carbon with the remainder from biogenic precursors, while in wilderness areas in Idaho, biogenic organic carbon accounted for 80% of the total organic aerosol. Regional analysis of the secondary organic aerosol formation in the Columbia River Gorge, Central Idaho, and the Olympics/Puget Sound showed that the production rate of secondary organic carbon depends on local terpene concentrations and the local oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere, which was strongly influenced by anthropogenic emissions. Comparison with observations from 12 IMPROVE sites and 21 ozone monitoring sites showed that results from the two El simulations generally bracketed the average observed PM parameters and that errors calculated for the model results were within acceptable bounds. Analysis across all statistical parameters indicated that the NW-AIRQUEST El solution performed better at predicting PM2.5, PM1, and beta(ext) even though organic carbon PM was over-predicted, and the NET96 El solution performed better with regard to the inorganic aerosols. For the NW-AIRQUEST El solution, the normalized bias was 30% and the normalized absolute error was 49% for PM2.5 mass. The NW-AIRQUEST solution slightly overestimated peak hourly ozone downwind of urban areas, while the NET96 solution slightly underestimated peak values, and both solutions over-predicted average 03 concentrations across the domain by approximately 6 ppb.  相似文献

Cofiring coal in municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWls) has previously been reported to reduce polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDDs/Fs) emissions due to increasing the flue gas SO2 concentration. The present study was focused on understanding the primary mechanism responsible for the suppressant effect of SO2 on total PCDD/F formation and toxic equivalent (TEQ) emissions. The addition of SO2, simulating the effect of coal addition on the flue gas composition, resulted in significant reductions in the TEQ emissions due to reactions involving SO2 in the postcombustion zone. However, emissions of total PCDDs/Fs, unlike the TEQ value, were dependent upon the Cl2 and SO2 injection temperatures due to increases in non-TEQ correlated isomers. The conversion of metal chlorides in the fly ash to sulfates, thus reducing the sites responsible for chlorination/oxidation reactions, was concluded to be the main suppressant mechanism; proposed reactions for copper and iron are presented. This mechanism was found to be independent of combustion conditions and could have prolonged effects on PCDD/F emissions from deposits formed with high flue gas S/Cl ratios.  相似文献

Partitioning and bioaccumulation of PBDEs and PCBs in Lake Michigan   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Water from Lake Michigan and fish from all five Great Lakes have been sampled and analyzed for a suite of six polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners and 110 polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs). The Lake Michigan dissolved phase PBDE congener concentrations (0.2 to 10 pg/L) are similar to dissolved phase PCB congener concentrations (nondetected to 13 pg/L). Partitioning of PBDEs between the particulate and dissolved phases exhibits behavior similar to that of PCBs. Organic-carbon-normalized water-particle partition coefficients (log K(OC)s) ranged from 6.2 to 6.5. Lake trout are depleted in BDE-99 relative to dissolved phase concentrations, and in contrast to what is expected from the PCB congener patterns. This reflects suspected debromination of BDE-99 in the food web of Lake Michigan. A regression of the log of the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and the log of the octanol-water partition coefficent (K(OW)) indicated a positive relationship for both PCB congeners and PBDE congeners. BDE-99 does not appear to followthe same trend, a further indication that it is subject to biotransformation. Using the PBDE BAFs for Lake Michigan and the PBDE fish concentrations from the other Great Lakes it is expected that the dissolved phase concentrations of congeners in the other lakes would range from 0.04 to approximately 3 pg/L.  相似文献

Salt management in irrigated agriculture is critical to the economies of the San Joaquin Valley of California and many other areas around the world. Purified salts can be recovered as marketable products through fractional crystallization following concentration of final stage drainage water from integrated on-farm drainage management systems. To obtain recovered salt and use as a commercial product, new systems which can perform with higher efficiency and lower environmental impact than solar evaporation basins or solar ponds that have previously been used for the final stage are in need of development. For this purpose, a number of solar-assisted brine concentration concepts have been explored, including an open liquid film-type using a tilted evaporation surface described here. Model performance was conceptually evaluated and then experimentally verified.A transient model was developed from energy and component mass balances and employed constitutive heat and mass transfer relationships from various other sources for simulating concentration of agricultural drainage water using a liquid film solar-assisted concentrator.Measured maximum evaporation rate and productivity were between 1.3 and 1.5 kg m−2 h−1, and 80 kg m−2 over a 7 day experimental period respectively which was about a third better performance compared with a shallow basin horizontal concentrator. Measurements were in good agreement with model predictions: within 2 °C at the peak and 4 °C at the lowest evaporation, and 0.2 kg m−2 h−1 for evaporation rates during the peak evaporation periods of the day when compared with independent data sets. Cumulative evaporation rates were from 75 to 85 kg m−2 for the tilted concentrator model and 60 to 65 kg m−2 for the horizontal concentrator model after 7 days. The tilted concentrator yielded productivity and efficiency that were 33% higher than the horizontal concentrator according to the experimental result for the same period and location.  相似文献
