Energy-accuracy trade-offs for hybrid localization using RSS and inertial measurements in wireless sensor networks

This paper presents a framework for optimizing the trade-off between energy consumption and localization accuracy in hybrid localization systems combining Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements with inertial ones. The proposed framework aims at finding the optimal operation point that minimizes the radio energy consumption for a desired target accuracy, or equivalently, the one that maximizes the localization accuracy for a given energy budget. To this end, the proposed approach considers the joint optimization of the localization frequency and number of RSS measurements used at each localization round and leverages practical models to predict the energy consumption and the localization accuracy for combined RSS-inertial localization systems. Simulations and real-field experiments are used to demonstrate that, for a given target accuracy, the proposed strategy entails a lower energy consumption than state-of-the-art methods available in the literature.     

A 1-V 3.8 - 5.7-GHz wide-band VCO with differentially tuned accumulation MOS varactors for common-mode noise rejection in CMOS SOI technology

In this paper, a 1-V 3.8 - 5.7-GHz wide-band voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) in a 0.13-/spl mu/m silicon-on-insulator (SOI) CMOS process is presented. This VCO features differentially tuned accumulation MOS varactors that: 1) provide 40% frequency tuning when biased between 0 - 1 V and 2) diminish the adverse effect of high varactor sensitivity through rejection of common-mode noise. This paper shows that, for differential LC VCOs, all low-frequency noise such as flicker noise can be considered to be common-mode noise, and differentially tuned varactors can be used to suppress common-mode noise from being upconverted to the carrier frequency. The noise rejection mechanism is explained, and the technological advantages of SOI over bulk CMOS in this regard is discussed. At 1-MHz offset, the measured phase noise is -121.67 dBc/Hz at 3.8 GHz, and -111.67 dBc/Hz at 5.7 GHz. The power dissipation is between 2.3 - 2.7-mW, depending on the center frequency, and the buffered output power is -9 dBm. Due to the noise rejection, the VCO is able to operate at very low voltage and low power. At a supply voltage of 0.75 V, the VCO only dissipates 0.8 mW at 5.5 GHz.

Experimental investigation of N-MOS inversion layers in the electric quantum limit

In this paper we report on the experimental determination of inversion electron charge density, silicon surface potential, and effective electron mobility vs oxide electric field, for NMOSFETs with gate oxide thickness Tox = 2.2 nm operating far beyond the limit of applicability of Boltzmann relationships in the inversion layer. We find that such oxides have the same values of destructive breakdown electric field, dielectric constant, and trap density at the silicon-oxide interface as “thick” oxides.     

Effects of stress on methyltransferase synthesis: An important DNA repair enzyme.

Explored the relationship between stress and tumor development in 44 female Sprague-Dawley rats given the carcinogen dimethylnitrosamine. Half were randomly assigned to a rotational stress condition. Results indicate that the levels of methyltransferase, a DNA repair enzyme induced in response to carcinogen damage, were significantly lower in spleens from the stressed Ss, suggesting that stress may impair DNA repair. While it is not clear that stressors such as periodic rotation parallel the physiological effects of psychological or social stress in humans, there are epidemiological data that link distress and cancer risk in humans.
