Influence of fretting on the fatigue strength at the vise clamp-specimen interface

Fretting fatigue is one of the most important phenomena for inducing a significant reduction of fatigue strength and consequently, leading to unexpected failure accidents of the engineering structures even at very low stresses. In the present study, both plain and fretting fatigue tests with zero mean stress were carried out on two different types of steel, low-carbon steel and martensitic stainless steel, by means of a reversed bending fatigue testing machine. The drop in the fatigue strengths through fretting at vise clamp-specimen interface were significant for both tested steels. The fretting processes produced a reduction in fatigue strength of about 27% for low-carbon steel and 16% for martensitic stainless steel.     

Contractor-Performed Quality Control: Is the Fox Guarding the Henhouse?

At the same time that state departments of transportation are allowing contractor-performed quality control, they are also concerned about using the contractor-reported data for acceptance and payment purposes. The question is, are we putting the fox in charge of guarding the chickens? To address this concern, a large number of asphalt and concrete projects in Kentucky were examined. The statistical analyses showed that for the most part there is no significant difference between the contractor-performed acceptance data and concomitant highway agency-performed verification data. This is obviously a very encouraging finding that is expected to enhance the level of trust between the contractors and highway agencies.     

Phase Transition VO2 Thin Films for Optical Switches

This paper presents a method to make vanadium dioxide (VO₂) crystallites on silicon substrates by reactive ion beam sputtering. The thickness of the thin film is about 100nm. The phase transition temperature of VO₂ is 65°C. The transmittance of the semiconducting phase VO₂ is about 50% and it is reduced to as low as 3% in metal phase at the infrared wavelenghth spectrum. The extinction ratio of the optical switches is 12dB. and the insertion loss is of 1-2dB. The switching time is about 1ms.

辐射对血液流变效应的研究及动物全身照射后全血粘度的变化规律

本文结果表明经一次大剂量全身照射后的机体血液流变的主要特性为全血表观粘度先高粘后低粘的双向性变化,从照后第一天起即升高。随着放射病病程的发展,在早期有一个高粘峰,其峰均值比照前升高47.80％。但因不同动物、不同剂量、不同均速,不同血源而变化不同。
