Quadratic interpolation for image resampling

Nearest-neighbor, linear, and various cubic interpolation functions are frequently used in image resampling. Quadratic functions have been disregarded largely because they have been thought to introduce phase distortions. This is shown not to be the case, and a family of quadratic functions is derived. The interpolating member of this family has visual quality close to that of the Catmull-Rom cubic, yet requires only 60% of the computation time.     

Influence of the quality of the heterointerface on the cyclotron resonance spectra of InAs/(AlGa)Sb heterostructures

Cyclotron resonance is measured in solitary type-II InAs-AlGaSb quantum wells grown by molecular-beam epitaxy under various growth conditions. Quantum oscillations observed in the cyclotron resonance spectra in InAs-GaSb samples are attributed to scattering by a short-range potential due to roughness of the heterointerface. A new method based on measurement of the cyclotron resonance spectra is proposed for assessing the quality of the heterointerface. Fiz. Tekh. Poluprovodn. 31, 1246–1248 (October 1997)     

Error-resilience improvement for block-transform video coders

An algorithm is presented to enhance the resilience of block-based video-coding algorithms against channel errors. The error-resilience algorithm described suggests the use of fixed length coding to alleviate the effect of Huffman coding on the synchronisation of the decode under erroneous conditions. The proposed mechanism modifies the order of transmission of the fixed-length video parameters to increase the chance of their arrival. Synchronisation words are sent at fixed-length intervals within the bit stream to reduce the possibility of the decoder falling on similar bit patterns within the bit stream. To limit the effect of error accumulation, the motion prediction process is halted and the differential coding of motion vectors is not applied. FEC techniques are applied on some error-sensitive segments of the reordered video bitstream. The effectiveness of the proposed error-resilience algorithm is evidenced by both subjective and objective results     

Four-channel polarization-insensitive optically transparent wavelength converter

Multichannel wavelength converters may be important components in the cross-connects in future wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) transport networks. We demonstrate a multichannel, polarization-insensitive, optically transparent wavelength converter, based on four-wave mixing in two semiconductor optical amplifiers in a polarization-diversity arrangement. Bit-error-rate (BER) measurements with four input 2.5-Gb/s WDM channels, spaced by 2 nm, show penalties for wavelength conversion less than 2.6 dB at 10/sup -9/ BER. Changes in the state of polarization of the input signals cause the output power to change by less than 1.2 dB, and the corresponding power penalties change by less than 0.9 dB.     

Wavelet packet modulation for orthogonally multiplexedcommunication

Utilizing multidimensional signaling techniques, a generalized multirate wavelet-based modulation format for orthogonally multiplexed communication systems is presented. Wavelet packet modulation (WPM) employs the basis functions from an arbitrary pruning of a dyadic tree structured filter bank as orthogonal pulse shapes for conventional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols. This generalized framework affords an entire library of basis sets with increased flexibility in time-frequency (T-F) partitioning. The bandwidth efficiency and power spectral density figures of merit for the general signal are derived and shown to be that of standard QAM     

Diagnosis and correction of multiple logic design errors in digitalcircuits

This paper presents a technique to correct multiple logic design errors in a gate-level netlist. A number of methods have been proposed for correcting single logic design errors. However, the extension of these methods to more than one error is still very limited. We direct our attention to circuits with a low multiplicity of errors. By assuming different error dependency scenarios, multiple errors are corrected by repeatedly applying a single error search and correction algorithm. Experimental results on correcting double-design errors and triple-design errors on ISCAS and MCNC benchmark circuits are included     

Thick-layer glycerin-containing bichromated gelatin for recording volume holograms

A thick-layer light-sensitive material consisting of glycerin-containing bichromated gelatin has been prepared and used to record real-time volume holograms with 0.44 μm helium-cadmium laser radiation. The thickness of the layers is 400–600 μm. The holographic sensitivity of the material is 1 J/cm². The highest diffraction efficiency of holograms recorded using a symmetric system with parallel beams is 32%. Pis’ma Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 23, 62–65 (April 12, 1997)     

Use of a two-wire microwave line at the boundary of the investigated zone to measure the electron density in a low-temperature plasma

Construction of a plasmid carrying both CTP synthetase and a fused gene formed from cholinephosphate cytidylyltransferase and choline kinase genes and its application to industrial CDP-choline production: enzymatic production of CDP-choline from orotic acid (Part II)

A new method for enzymatic production of cytidine diphosphate choline (CDP-choline) from orotic acid and choline chloride was developed. To establish an industrial manufacturing process, we constructed a plasmid, pCKG55, which simultaneously expressed in Escherichia coli the three following enzymes; CTP synthetase (encoded by the pyrG gene from E. coli), cholinephosphate cytidylyltransferase (encoded by the CCT gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae), and choline kinase (encoded by the CKI gene from S. cerevisiae). CCT and CKI genes on pCKG55 were designed to be expressed as a single CCT/CKI fused protein. This CCT/CKI fused protein retained both activities and the thermal stability of its cholinephosphate cytidylyltransferase activity was nearly the same as the native CCT enzyme. Corynebacterium ammoniagenes KY13505 and E. coli MM294/pCKG55 were cultured in 5-liter jar fermentor independently. Equal volumes of each broth were mixed in a 2-liter jar fermentor, and then the enzymatic reaction was done using 47 mM orotic acid and 60 mM choline chloride as substrates. After 23 h of the reaction at 32 degrees C, 21.5 mM (11 g/liter) of CDP-choline was accumulated.
