Derating factor for cable crossings with consideration of longitudinal heat flow in cable screen

In this paper, an extension of the previously published method for the calculation of the derating factors for cables crossing external heat sources is proposed. The extension takes into account the longitudinal heat flow in cable metallic screen. The proposed algorithm is illustrated in a numerical example considering a practical situation of a high voltage cable crossing a steam pipe.     

Examining relations among attachment, religiosity, and new age spirituality using the Adult Attachment Interview.

This study was the first to examine relations between attachment and religion-spirituality in adults using a developmentally validated attachment assessment, the Adult Attachment Interview. Security of attachment was expected to be linked to a religiosity-spirituality that is socially based on the parental relationships and reflects extrapolation of attachment experiences with sensitive parents to perceived relationships with a loving God. Insecurity of attachment was expected to be related to religiosity- spirituality via emotional compensation for states of insecurity. Participants (N = 84; 40% men; mean age = 29 years) were drawn from religious-spiritual groups. Religiousness-spirituality was assessed with questionnaires. Results generally supported the hypotheses ( ps = .05). Estimates of parental loving were linked to socially based religiosity, loving God images, and gradual religious changes occurring at early ages and in life contexts indicating a positive influence of close relationships. Estimates of parental rejection and role reversal were related to New Age spirituality and sudden-intense religious changes occurring in life contexts of turmoil. Current attachment state of mind was generally unrelated to traditional religiosity, but current preoccupation, unresolved- disorganized, and cannot classify states were associated with New Age spirituality. GIS Integrated Modelling of a Himalayan Landscape

Land-surface modelling is traditionally based on reductionistic cause-effect models developed for the temperate region. Sustainable management of vulnerable and extreme regions demands a new holistic approach relying on first principles and integration of processes and patterns. In this article remotely sensed data and GIS are combined for creating digital data sets of elevation and vegetation over the Himalayan Sutlej river and its tributaries. GIS-coupled models are used for distributed estimates of precipitation,and modelling of the basin water cycle. Based on the derived data and their scale and error, an expert system incorporating fuzzy logic is used for index-related erosion modelling. It is concluded that GIS integrated modelling can pave the way to sustainable landscape management.     

Calcitonin gene-related peptide and alpha-CGRP mRNA expression in cranial motoneurons after hypoglossal nerve injury during postnatal development

Changes in calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) immunoreactivity and alpha-CGRP mRNA expression were determined in the hypoglossal nucleus after the nerve was crushed or transected in rats at 10, 14 and 21 days postnatal. alpha-CGRP mRNA expression was determined in normal, noninjured, hypoglossal nuclei at the three ages and after both injuries in 10 and 21 days postnatal rats. Reinnervation and neuronal survival were assayed. Although the three age groups expressed comparable levels of alpha-CGRP mRNA and its peptide in intact, hypoglossal nuclei, axonal injury produced age-dependent alterations in alpha-CGRP mRNA and CGRP. In the 21 days postnatal rats, changes in alpha-CGRP mRNA and peptide mimicked those reported in adult motoneurons after the same injuries. CGRP was elevated until reinnervation after nerve crush, whereas biphasic elevations occurred after nerve transection. In 21 days postnatal rats, increases in alpha-CGRP mRNA preceded elevations of the peptide but a greater increase resulted initially after nerve transection. An upregulation of alpha-CGRP mRNA also developed initially after both injuries in 10 days postnatal rats but subsequent elevations of alpha-CGRP mRNA did not materialize. In contrast, CGRP immunoreactivity did not increase after either injury in 10 days postnatal rats and, in fact decreased. Levels of CGRP immunoreactivity did not differ from normal amounts after either nerve injury in 14 days postnatal rats. Substantial neuronal cell loss occurred after each injury in 10 and 14 days postnatal rats but was not found in 21 days postnatal rats. Tongue reinnervation by surviving motoneurons was established after all injury paradigms except 10 days postnatal transection. The current findings demonstrate an age-dependent correlation between injury-induced expression of CGRP and hypoglossal motoneuron survival.     

Elimination reactions in the medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase: bioactivation of cytotoxic 4-thiaalkanoic acids

A range of 4-thiaacyl-CoA derivatives has been synthesized to study the bioactivation of cytotoxic fatty acids by the mitochondrial medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase and the peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase. Both enzymes catalyze alpha-proton abstraction from normal acyl-CoA substrates with elimination of a beta-hydride equivalent to the FAD prosthetic group. In competition with this oxidation reaction, 4-thiaacyl-CoA thioesters undergo dehydrogenase-catalyzed beta-elimination, providing that the corresponding thiolates are sufficiently good leaving groups and can be accommodated by the active site of the enzyme. Thus, the dehydrogenase catalyzes the elimination of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and 4-nitrothiophenolate from 4-(2-benzothiazole)-4-thiabutanoyl-CoA and 4-(4-nitrophenyl)-4-thiabutanoyl-CoA, respectively. However, the 2,4-dinitrophenyl-analogue appears too bulky and the unsubstituted thiophenyl-derivative is insufficiently activated for significant elimination. Molecular modeling shows that steric interference from the flavin ring dictates a syn rather than an anti elimination. Acryloyl-CoA, the other product of 4-thiaacyl-CoA elimination reactions, is not a significant inactivator of the medium-chain dehydrogenase. In contrast, the irreversible inactivation observed during beta-elimination using 5,6-dichloro-4-thia-5-hexenoyl-CoA (DCTH-CoA), 5,6-dichloro-7,7,7-trifluoro-4-thia-5-heptenoyl-CoA (DCTFTH-CoA), and 6-chloro-5,5,6-trifluoro-4-thiahexanoyl-CoA (CTFTH-CoA) is caused by release of cytotoxic thiolate products within the active site of the dehydrogenase. The double bond between C5 and C6 found in the vinylic analogues DCTH- and DCTFTH-CoA is not essential for enzyme inactivation, although CTFTH-CoA is a weaker inhibitor of the dehydrogenase. Mechanism-based inactivation with CTFTH-CoA requires elimination, is unaffected by exogenous nucleophiles, and is strongly protected by octanoyl-CoA. The peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase efficiently oxidizes 4-thiaacyl-CoA analogues, but is only rapidly inactivated by DCTFTH-CoA. The variable ratio of elimination to oxidation observed for DCTH-, DCTFTH-, and CTFTH-CoA may influence the metabolism of the corresponding cytotoxic alkanoic acids in vivo.
