The development of refined finite element models for the analysis of a concrete slab on steel beam highway bridges is presented in this paper. This paper summarizes the process by which a refined finite element analysis was applied to bridge superstructures using ICES-STRUDL. This process will assist bridge engineers and researchers in predicting the actual stress distribution and evaluating the load transfer to beams from designed vehicle loads on highway bridges.  相似文献

The flow due to a moving extensible sheet that obeys a more general stretching law is considered. The sheet occupies the negative x-axis and is moving continually in the positive x-direction, in an incompressible viscous and electrically conducting fluid. The sheet somehow disappears in a sink that is located at (x, y) = (0, 0). The governing system of partial differential equations is first transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, and the transformed equations are solved numerically using a finite-difference scheme, namely the Keller-box method. The features of the flow and heat-transfer characteristics for different values of the governing parameters are analyzed and discussed. It is found that dual solutions exist for the flow near x = 0, where the velocity profiles show a reversed flow.  相似文献

A series of reverse Y‐shaped surfactants containing aromatic and aliphatic linkers to combine two short hydrocarbon chains and one carbohydrate head group was prepared. Liquid crystalline behavior, air–water interfacial properties, and efficiency as an emulsifier was investigated for each reverse Y‐shaped surfactant. All reverse Y‐shaped surfactants mediated higher emulsion stabilities for water‐in‐oil compared to common typical reference surfactants, reflecting an improved ability to cope with a curvature towards water. The introduction of a benzene ring into the linker substantially increased the affinity of the surfactant for hydrophobic media, resulting in improved emulsion stability for both water‐in‐oil and oil‐in‐water.  相似文献

Precise segmentation of vasculature from three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images is playing an important role in image-guided neurosurgery, pre-operation planning and clinical analysis. Active Contour based evolution algorithms are being widely applied to MRA data sets, however existing approaches exhibit some difficulties in extracting tiny parts of the vessels. Our objective is to develop an automated segmentation scheme to accurately extract vasculature of the brain, especially tiny vessels. Inspired by the intrinsic properties of MRA, we have proposed a scheme called the gradient compensated geodesic active contours (GCGAC), which compensates for low gradients near edges of thin vessels. The GCGAC, which is implemented based on level set, has been tested on both synthetic volumetric image and real 3D MRA images. Our experiments show that the introduced gradient compensation can facilitate more accurate segmentation of tiny blood vessels.  相似文献

Clonal central nervous system neuronal cells, B103, do not synthesize detectable endogenous APP or APLP. B103 cells transfected with both wild-type (B103/APP) and mutant APP construct (B103/APP delta NL) secreted comparable amounts of soluble forms of APP (sAPP). B103/APP cells produced sAPP and cleaved at amyloid beta/A4 (A beta) 16, the alpha-secretase site, and B103/APP delta NL cells produced sAPP beta cleaved at A beta 1, the beta-secretase site. B103/APP delta NL cells developed fewer neurites than B103/APP cells in a serum-free defined medium. Neurite numbers of parent B103 cells were increased by the 50% conditioned medium (CM) from B103/APP cells but reduced by the CM from B103/APP delta NL cells. Chemically synthesized A beta at concentration levels higher than 1 nM reduced numbers of neurites from B103 or B103/APP delta NL cells. However, A beta at 1-100 nM could not reduce the neurite number of B103/APP cells. The protective activity against A beta's deleterious effect to reduce neurite numbers was attributed to sAPP alpha in the CM. Although sAPP alpha could block the effect of A beta, sAPP beta could not do so under the identical condition, suggesting the importance of the C-terminal 15-amino acid sequence in sAPP alpha. Nevertheless, sAPP alpha's protective activity required the N-terminal sequence around RERMS, previously identified to be the active domain of sAPP beta. The overall effect of APP mutation which overproduced A beta and sAPP beta and underproduced sAPP alpha was a marked decline in the neurotrophic effect of APP. We suggest that the disruption of balance between the detrimental effect of A beta and the trophic effect of sAPP may be important in the pathogenesis of AD caused by this pathogenic APP mutation.  相似文献

Colonoscopy has become a routine procedure in many hospitals all over the world for colon cancer diagnosis. This review article discusses the work done by researchers in the quest to automate the colonoscopy procedure. In vitro and in vivo experimentation have been carried out to prove the possibilities of a robot crawling along a patient's colon, treating polyps as they are encountered. Locomotion is an essential part of robotic colonoscopy. The robot must be able to propel itself from the anus right up to the cecum without damaging the colon walls. The challenge is to design a robust locomotion technique that is able to advance through the stretchable, slippery, and mobile colon, which is always in its collapsed stage, in three-dimensional orientation. The authors believe that in the future, conventional colonoscopy will be revolutionized, giving way to robotics to assist doctors in colonoscope manipulation and performing therapeutic procedures and leaving doctors to concentrate on the diagnostic aspect of the procedure, which would encourage mass screening as more patients can be evaluated per session.  相似文献

We introduce a highly scalable video compression system for very low bit-rate videoconferencing and telephony applications around 10-30 kbits/s. The video codec first performs a motion-compensated three-dimensional (3-D) wavelet (packet) decomposition of a group of video frames, and then encodes the important wavelet coefficients using a new data structure called tri-zerotrees (TRI-ZTR). Together, the proposed video coding framework forms an extension of the original zero tree idea of Shapiro (1992) for still image compression. In addition, we also incorporate a high degree of video scalability into the codec by combining the layered/progressive coding strategy with the concept of embedded resolution block coding. With scalable algorithms, only one original compressed video bit stream is generated. Different subsets of the bit stream can then be selected at the decoder to support a multitude of display specifications such as bit rate, quality level, spatial resolution, frame rate, decoding hardware complexity, and end-to-end coding delay. The proposed video codec also allows precise bit rate control at both the encoder and decoder, and this can be achieved independently of the other video scaling parameters. Such a scheme is very useful for both constant and variable bit rate transmission over mobile communication channels, as well as video distribution over heterogeneous multicast networks. Finally, our simulations demonstrated comparable objective and subjective performance when compared to the ITU-T H.263 video coding standard, while providing both multirate and multiresolution video scalability  相似文献

Eggs of Schistosoma mansoni were obtained from livers of mice and hatching was observed under varying conditions of light and ionic composition of the medium. Hatching occurred equally well in light and in darkness. Eggs also hatched readily in 1- to 50-m OsM solutions of urea, sucrose, sodium chloride, and glycerol, but hatching was inhibited at higher concentrations unless the eggs were left in solutions for long periods of time. Hatching readily occurred in deionized water, but the emerged miracidia did not swim longer than 5 to 10 min unless Na+ was added. Histochemistry of the egg showed DNA-positive egg granules and a polysaccharide-positive vacuole matrix. Acid mucopolysaccharides were stained in the vacuolar matrix and in the anterior sac of the miracidium. Longitudinal alignment of constituents of the egg shell is suggested by the predominance of longitudinal rents in the shell at hatching. A mechanism of hatching involving an osmotic stimulus is proposed.  相似文献
